LAS VEGAS -- The Indiana Pacers blew Lance Stephenson a kiss goodbye and jumped on Rodney Stuckey to fill the void. The Pacers agreed to terms with Stuckey on a one-year deal Wednesday, a person with knowledge of the agreement told The Associated Press. The deal comes one day after the Charlotte Hornets swooped in to land Stephenson, the wild-card guard who dazzled with his versatility and infuriated with his after-the-whistle antics. Terms of the deal, which was first reported by USA Today, were not immediately available. The person requested anonymity because an official announcement has not been made. Stephenson was one of the Pacers best offensive players on a team that often struggled to put the ball in the basket. He gained All-Star consideration while averaging 13.8 points, 7.2 rebounds and 4.6 assists in a breakout year. But he also showed flashes of erratic behaviour, most notably when he blew into LeBron James ear during the Eastern Conference finals.dddddddddddd Charlotte landed him with a three-year, $27 million contract after the Pacers couldnt close the deal with him, so Indiana moved quickly to address the loss. Stuckey averaged 13.9 points last season, his seventh season with the Detroit Pistons. He was once viewed as a promising building block for the Pistons, and he averaged 16.6 points and 4.8 assists in 2009-10. Stuckey only shot 27 per cent from 3-point range and just over 43 per cent from the field overall, so he wont bring a lot of perimeter shooting help. But he is at his best attacking the basket and the Pacers also addressed some shooting needs earlier in the summer when they added C.J. Miles. The Pistons had little use for Stuckey after they brought in D.J. Augustin and Jodie Meeks to add to their backcourt. They also added forward Caron Butler, who can bring some 3-point shooting to the team. ' ' '

CLEVELAND -- No one will fault the Charlotte Bobcats for taking a moment to savour their second post-season appearance in franchise history. Theyve come a long way in a short period of time. Al Jefferson scored 24 points, including seven in overtime, and the Bobcats clinched a playoff spot with a 96-94 victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers on Saturday night. Charlotte is in the post-season for the second time in its 10-year history and the first time since 2010. The Bobcats (39-38) are over .500 for the second time this season and hold seventh place in the Eastern Conference. Steve Clifford, the Bobcats third coach in three seasons, praised his teams character. "This is a significant accomplishment for our group of guys, and it puts us in a different place in the league," he said. "The guys in the locker room are excited -- and they should be -- because weve got a good group of guys and a group of guys who are truly deserving." While the Bobcats were celebrating, the Cavaliers slim playoff hopes suffered yet another damaging loss despite a career-high 44 points from Kyrie Irving. Cleveland (31-47) trails eighth-place Atlanta by 3 1/2 games for the final playoff spot in the East. The Bobcats have made significant progress since finishing 7-59 in the lockout-shortened 2011-12 season. Charlotte was 21-61 last season. "Words cant describe it," guard Kemba Walker said. "For me, Gerald (Henderson), and Biz (Bismack Biyombo), we were the original guys here. We were on the worst team my first two years, so to go from there to here, its like night and day." Hendersons basket gave Charlotte a 90-89 lead with 1:08 remaining and the Bobcats made four free throws down the stretch to seal the win. Walker scored 20 points and Henderson added 15 for the Bobcats, who have won four straight and swept the four-game season series with Cleveland. "This means a lot, individually and as a team," Henderson said. "I thought we would be good, but I think weve exceeded everybodys expectations -- even our own." Irving, wwho defended himself before the game over reports hes unhappy in Cleveland, was 16 of 31 from the field, including five 3-pointers.ddddddddddddHe added eight assists and seven rebounds. The Cavaliers could be eliminated from contention before they play again Wednesday. Irving admitted hell be paying attention to what Atlanta and New York -- the teams ahead of Cleveland -- are doing. "In this game, anything can happen," he said. "I know the Knicks and Hawks play some pretty tough teams coming up. Ill definitely be watching. Well see." Walkers 3-pointer with 32 seconds remaining in regulation gave Charlotte an 82-80 lead, but Irvings jumper 7 seconds later tied the game. Irvings basket gave Cleveland an 89-86 lead with 1:55 remaining in overtime, but Jefferson hit a free throw and Hendersons basket put the Bobcats ahead. Following a Cleveland turnover, Walker missed a jumper, but Cody Zeller got the rebound and passed it out to Walker, who was fouled and made both shots with 17 seconds remaining to make it 92-89. After Dion Waiters sank two free throws, Walker split a pair of foul shots with 11 seconds to go. Following a time out, Irving took the inbounds pass at the top of the key, but his wide-open 3-pointer rimmed out. "Thats as good a look that I had all night," he said. "It was in and out. It was a crucial miss, (but) I can live with that." Hendersons two free throws with 7 seconds left gave the Bobcats a 95-91 lead. Spencer Hawes made a 3-pointer with 4 seconds to get the Cavaliers within one before Jefferson hit a free throw with 2.3 seconds left. He missed the second, but the Cavaliers had no timeouts remaining and Hawes desperation full-court heave was short. NOTES: Charlotte has defeated Cleveland five straight times. ... Bobcats assistant coach Mark Price, who starred for the Cavaliers from 1986-95, got a big ovation when he was shown on the scoreboard in the second quarter. ... The Bobcats are 3-14 all-time at Quicken Loans Arena, the worst record by a visiting team at the 20-year-old arena. ' ' '
Seven retired NFL players are objecting to a proposed settlement of concussion claims, calling it a "lousy deal" for ex-players whose symptoms dont qualify them for compensation. The players lawyers filed a motion in federal court in Philadelphia on Wednesday urging a judge to reject the settlement between the NFL and as many as 20,000 retired players. The settlement provides up to $5 million each for retired players who develop Lou Gehrigs disease, dementia or other neurological problems believed to be caused by concussions suffered during their pro careers. The deal excludes players with symptoms of a degenerative brain condition called chronic traumatic encephalopathy, those suffering from milder brain injuries and veterans of the defunct NFL Europe, the players objection said. The players also said that the proposed claims process is onorous and confusing and that attorneys for the plaintiffs failed to conduct any discovery in the case. "The revised settlement is a great deal -- for the NFL and class counsel," who would get $112.5 million in attorneys fees, the players motion said. "It is a lousy deal for the retired players, whose rights have been bargained away without adequate or independent representation." A spokesman for the plaintiffs attorneys declined to comment on Thursday, referring to an earlier statement touting the deal. An NFL spokesman also declined to comment. More than 4,500 former players have filed suit, some accusing the league of fraud for its handling of concussions. They include former Dallas Cowboys running back Tony Dorsett and Super Bowl-winning Chicago Bears quarterback Jim McMahon, who suffers from dementia. A revised settlement agreement filed last week removed a $675 million cap on damages after U.S. District Judge Anita Brody questioned whether there would be enough money to pay all claims. "I think some guys just wanted to go shoot some hoops and loosen up," said captain Dion Phaneuf on a rest day for most of his teammates. The Leafs are doing what they can to loosen up and shake the ills of a losing streak that has them tumbling closer and closer to another late season collapse and early spring exit. In fine position as recently as two weeks ago - second in the Atlantic following a statement win in L.A. - they are now simply clinging to the final wild card position in the East with a grueling test against St. Louis ahead on Tuesday night. "No ones happy with whats gone on," said Phaneuf, "but its reality. We have got to come [Tuesday] prepared and ready to go." Just as the highs of a win streak are exaggerated so too are the lows of a losing slide. Toronto has lost five straight, all close games and all with a series of consistent and untimely trends. First has been the sluggish starts and inability to score the games first goal. The Leafs have a .714 winning percentage this season when they score first, a .289 mark when they dont. Theyve given up that valued first goal in seven straight games, falling behind by two or more in five of the seven (six losses). And while theyve improbably rallied to tie or pull within one in each of the five losses - even leading briefly against Tampa - the uphill climb has ultimately proven too steep to overcome. "The one issue for us, more than anything, is that we seem to have been putting ourselves in the position of clawing back into games," head coach Randy Carlyle observed. "And you wont have success if you continually have to do that." "Weve played from behind too often," Phaneuf concurred. "When we have been coming from behind thats when weve been attacking more than from the start. When you do get down you play with more desperation. We have to find a way to play with that desperation right from the get-go." Not helping matters, though certainly not the singular point of blame, has been the goaltending. His confidence simply sunk at this point, James Reimer has not provided anywhere near the top-tier caliber of goaltending that Jonathan Bernier delivered before his injury, the kind of elite nightly theatrics the defensively-inept Leafs require to win. Consider Berniers 8-2-2 record and .947 save percentage this season when facing 40 shots as reminders of that ability to perform under heavy strain. Reimer, meanwhile, has a disastrous .871 save percentage in five starts in place of Bernier. Nursing the first groin injury of his career, Bernier was on the ice again Monday afternoon, but wasnt sure if hed be available to return against the Blues. "It hurts to see your team lose," he said, "but at the same time its one of those injuries [wwhere] youve got to take time.dddddddddddd Dont want to rush and then youre out for another four or five games after." Bernier said his readiness would be determined by the teams medical staff, but said hed know for himself when he was able to make "a split save or that I can make that stretch save and not think about it I guess." Update: Bernier was the projected starter on Tuesday morning. Without him, Carlyle would be faced with difficult question in goal for a tough tilt against the best team in the West. Start Reimer for the sixth consecutive game despite his struggles or hand the net to Drew MacIntyre, the 30-year-old who has yet to start an NHL game. While perhaps difficult to envision Carlyle turning back to Reimer yet again, consider that under similarly challenging circumstance - two sets of back-to-backs in the past week - he went with the struggling former no. 1 each and every time. The tried and tested product, however unstable at the moment, may be more appealing than the unknown. Reimer was pulled for MacIntyre in the teams fifth straight loss on Sunday night. "What happened last game, surely you take that into consideration, but the most important thing is that the individual we choose to represent us at that position tomorrow night we feel confident he can get the job done," said Carlyle. Beyond goaltending are the series of game-changing mistakes and breakdowns that have often left Reimer on an island all his own, left to sink or swim in an unforgiving crease. Bernier bailed out those mistakes more often than not. Reimer has not. There was Troy Brouwer left all by his lonesome in the slot during the first loss in Washington. There were two Gustav Nyquist breakaway goals in Detroit. It was three times open for Steven Stamkos in Toronto. There was the Phil Kessel neutral zone giveaway which sprung Max Pacioretty against Montreal, a Rene Bourque breakaway coming shortly after. And most recently, a bad line change and pinch that sparked an odd-man rush goal from Damien Brunner and then later another breakaway, this time from Patrik Elias. "What we have to do is we have to limit our mistakes," said Carlyle. "Were making too many of them that are costing us in the hockey games." Additionally, the Leafs have been unable to find much offence beyond their top line. Without the likes of Phil Kessel, James van Riemsdyk, and Tyler Bozak scoring two or three a night, theyve simply not produced enough to overshadow other faults as was often the case in victories earlier this season. "Theres still lots of hockey to be played," Phaneuf said. "Theres lots of points that are available for us. We obviously are not happy about what has happened, but whats happened has happened. Theres no going back to yesterday or three days ago or a week ago. Right now our focus is on St. Louis and coming out and playing the way that we can. "Weve slid far enough. Weve got to grab some traction here and regroup with a big win." ' ' 'ir places are RHP Justin Miller and LHP Ian Krol. The Tigers also purchased the contract of RHP Kevin Whelan from Toledo and unconditionally released LHP Casey Crosby. Detroit will start RHP Buck Farmer on Wednesday and RHP Max Scherzer is slated to start Thursday. ' ' '
PITTSBURGH -- There used to be a time -- any year really between 1993-2012 -- when reaching 81 wins would be cause for celebration for the Pittsburgh Pirates. Not anymore. These days the certainty of a non-losing season is nothing more than a speed bump on Pittsburghs resilient quest for a playoff berth. Gregory Polanco, Neil Walker and Ike Davis all homered and the Pirates beat the Boston Red Sox 9-1 on Wednesday night to maintain their grip on the second National League wild card spot. Polanco and Walker hit solo shots off Boston starter Clay Buchholz (8-9) and Davis drilled a three-run blast to centre off reliever Steven Wright. The Pirates have won 10 of 12 and improved to a season-high 11 games over .500 (81-70). Pittsburgh moved 2.5 games clear of Milwaukee in its race for a second straight post-season bid after the Brewers fell to St. Louis. "We got some good pitches to hit and didnt miss them," manager Clint Hurdle said. "Fun to watch those guys work in the box." Francisco Liriano (6-10) won his third straight decision, allowing one run in six innings. The left-hander worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the first inning and has now given up two runs or less in 11 of his 12 starts since the All-Star break, looking like the pitcher who won 16 games in 2013 than the one that struggled with his command and his health during a rocky first half to 2014. "It was a battle for me today, just trying to execute pitches, make good pitches," Liriano said. "I got a couple little plays and just a tough night location-wise but Ill take it." Boston rookie centerfielder Rusney Castillo went 1 for 4 in his major league debut. The Cuban defector signed a seven-year, $72.5 million deal with the Red Sox last month. Boston has lost three of four. "Obviously Id like a better outcome in terms of winning the game," Castillo said. "But I was pretty satisfied with my overall approach and the way I stepped in today." Castillos arrival in the Red Sox clubhouse on Wednesday afternoon ended a quick tour of the teams minor league system. He made stops at three different levels before coming up to Boston to stay. While manager John Farrell stressed the final games of an otherwise lost season are simply a chance for Castillo to "get acclimated" to life in the big leagues, the 27-year-old believes it wont take long for him to get up to speed. He provided a brief glimpse of whats to come in the fourth when he ripped a sharp grounder to second that Walker couldnt handle for his first major league hit. "Ill sign it and keep it in my house somewhere," Castillo said with a smile. While Castillo is a part of Bostons long-term future, the present belongs to the Pirates. Polanco wasted little time drumming Buchholz, who hadnt given up a homer in his last 36 innings. There was no chance to make it 37 after Polanco drilled a Buchholz fastball into the seats in right for his seventh homer of the season and first since Aug. 10. The lead ballooned to 4-0 in the second behind a two-run double by Clint Barmes. Walker golfed a Buchholz pitch into the first row of seats in right for his 21st homer of the season in the third, extending his record for most home runs in a season by a Pittsburgh second baseman. TRAINERS ROOM Red Sox: 2B Brock Holt, out with a concussion since Aug. 25, is scheduled to meet with concussion specialist Micky Collins on Thursday. Farrell said Holt is doing daily vision exercises and running on a treadmill but has not started baseball related activities. Pirates: RHP Charlie Morton reported no issues a day after pitching five shutout innings in his first start in a month due to a hernia issue. Manager Clint Hurdle said hes still hasnt made a decision on who will start when Mortons turn in the rotation comes up again on Sunday against Milwaukee. UP NEXT Red Sox: Brandon Workman (1-9) will try to end a nine-game losing streak when he makes his 15th start of the season. Workmans only victory of the season came on June 10 against Baltimore. His ERA is a season-high 5.27 after giving up five earned runs in three innings of a 10-6 loss to Baltimore last week. Pirates: Gerrit Cole (9-5) goes for his third straight victory. "It very well couldve been one of those things you talk about as a momentum-changer," manager Clint Hurdle said. Snider not only saved runs, he created them. Snider hit a pair of home runs and drove in four, Starling Marte added three RBIs and the Pirates coasted to an 11-6 victory over the Detroit Tigers on Monday night. Gregory Polanco also threw out a runner at the plate, when Rajai Davis tried to score from second on Miguel Cabreras single in the eighth. Even with a five-run lead at the time, the game couldve become much closer. "They left as many men on base as we did," Hurdle said. "They were a swing of the bat from being right back in the game three times tonight." Verlander (10-11) gave up five runs on four hits and walked two before he was removed after pitching one inning with right shoulder soreness. "Just didnt feel great," Verlander said, "and disappointing on a night that the team really needed me." The loss, coupled with Kansas Citys 3-2 win over Oakland, dropped the Tigers a half-game behind the now first-place Royals in the AL Central Division. Pittsburgh loaded the bases against Verlander with one out in the first inning, and Marte cleared them with a triple down the left-field line. Snider drove Marte home when his grounder to first took an odd hop, and Victor Martinez couldnt glove it. Verlander threw 40 pitches and bunted in the second before he was removed. He is scheduled to undergo an MRI in Detroit on Tuesday. "Id be lying if I said I wasnt a little nervous," Verlander said. "Ive never been through this before." Verlander added there was no sharp pain in his shoulder, but manager Brad Ausmus removed him from the game to risk any further injury. Snider knocked in two more in the eighth inning off Phil Coke with his eighth homer, a two-run, opposite-field shot. Martin hit his sixth home run of the year in the sixth inning, and Ike Davis followed with his eighth. Snider was 3 for 5 and scored three runs. "Just another dday," Snider said.dddddddddddd. "For me, its nice to contribute offensively, and defensively, and help this team win." Detroit scored three runs in the sixth to get within 8-4 and knock Pittsburgh starter Jeff Locke out of the game. Cabrera, Martinez and Torii Hunter started the inning with consecutive hits, and Cabrera scored on Hunters double. Alex Avila drove Martinez home with a single, and Hunter scored when Don Kelly hit into a fielders choice. Locke (4-3) was responsible for four runs, eight hits and four walks in five-plus innings. TRAINERS ROOM Tigers: Detroit placed RHP Joakim Soria on the 15-day disabled list with a left oblique strain, retroactive to Sunday. BARCELONA, Spain -- Barcelona was unfazed by the recent departure of its club president amid a lawsuit as it eased to a 3-0 win over Malaga on Sunday to reclaim its share of the Spanish league lead. Lionel Messi didnt score but he played a part in two goals, setting up Pedro Rodriguez to make it 2-0 in the 55th after Gerard Pique had opened the scoring five minutes before halftime. Pedro then took Messis pass and crossed for Alexis Sanchez to tap in the hosts third in the 61st. Atletico Madrid stayed level with Barcelona at the top of the standings by romping to a 4-2 win at Rayo Vallecano as Diego Costa scored his 20th league goal of the season. Both title rivals ended a run of two straight draws to restore a one-point advantage over Real Madrid. The match at Camp Nou came just three days after Sandro Rosell stepped down to fight a lawsuit alleging that he misappropriated funds by hiding the true cost of signing of Brazil star Neymar. He and the club deny the accusations. Josep Bartomeu attended his first match as the Catalan clubs 40th president in the Camp Nou stands. Pique said that although he didnt know if Rosells exit was good for the club, he was sure the administrative turmoil hadnt affected the squads focus on defending its Spanish league title. "We continue competing the same way we have in recent years," said Pique. "Off the pitch, it is something people talk about, but on the pitch it affects us very little. "After all the bad moments we have had in these recent years we have maintained the league lead and that shows this group is strong and that we can stay on top," Pique said in a possible reference to the team dealing with former coach Tito Vilanovas and player Eric Abidals illnesses. Far from distracted, Gerardo Martinos team played one of its best games of the season, bombarding Malaga with 18 shots on-target of all types and from all angles. Martino, in fact, said he was more concerned about "not winning by a wider margin" than the clubs leadership. Pique broke through when he used his stomach to control a corner kick flicked on by Alexis, sized up Willy Caballero and then drove the ball under the Malaga goalie. Pique headed another corner kick against the woodwork moments before Pedro slotted inside the far post. Messi then dribbled at the Malaga defence to draw them in before laying off for Pedro, who found Alexis alone to score. Barcelonas Ibrahim Afellay went on as a late substitute after recovering from a six-month injury layoff. It was his first appearance for Barcelona since May 2012. Elsewhere, Athletic Bilbao striker Aritz Aduriz scored two goals and set up another in a 5-1 rout at 10-man Osasuna as the Basque club strengthened its grip on fourth place. Almeria edged Getafe 1-0 courtesy of striker Jonathan Zongos second-half header to escape the relegation zone. Diego Costa only trails Madrids 22-goal Cristiano Ronaldo as the leagues leading scorer, and the Brazilian-born players passing was key to Atleticos first two goals at Vallecas Stadium. "It was important to win after two draws," said Atletico striker David Villa, who downplayed the move back to the top. "We had to win, thats the important thing, going ahead game by game. We cant think about the rest." However, Atleticos win was tarnished by a shoulder injury to young midfielder Oliver Torres in the second half. Villa got Atletico rolling in the eighth minute after he stole the ball deep in Rayos territory and worked a one-two with Diego Costa before firing in his 10th league goal of the season. After Atletico goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois saved Jonathan Vieras penalty, Arda Turan took his first of two goals in the 30th to finish off a collective effort, with the ball flowing from Diego Costa through a generous Jose Sosa for Turan to roll in. Viera made up for his miss by scoring in the 40th, but Turan struck again in the 44th. Diego Costa found the net for the first time in 2014 when he redirected Filipe Luis cross in the 74th before Joaquin Larrivey responded almost immediately for Rayos second. VANCOUVER -- Canadian goalkeeper Marco Carducci signed with the Vancouver Whitecaps on Tuesday, becoming the eighth player from the teams residency program to graduate to the Major League Soccer squad. "Marco is a product of our youth development setup and were confident that he is ready to make the next step. He is a promising young goalkeeper who is mature beyond his years," Whitecaps FC head coach Carl Robinson said in a release. The 17-year-old goalkeeper from Calgary joined the Whitecaps residency program in September 2011 and has been a standout ever since. The six-foot-one, 185-pounder recorded 14 clean sheets in the 2011-12 United States Soccer Development Academy (USSDA). He allowed just two goals in four pre-season appearances last month with the first team. "Spending the last two and-a-half years with the residency program, I saw a lot of the support from the club and fans right from the start. Now to be able to make the next step up to the first team is a huge honour for me," Carducci said. "That was always my goal coming in and Im really excited for the future." Carducci is a two-time Canadian under-17 player of the year, recording eight caps with the U17 team after making his national youth team debut at 15. He started Canadas three matches of the 2013 FIFA U17 World Cup, and won a bronze medal with Canada at the 2013 CONCACAF mens U17 championship, starting all four matches and recording a clean sheet in the tournament opener against Trinidad and Tobago. He becomes the Whitecaps first goalkeeper to graduate from the residency program, and joins former residency players Sam Adekugbe, Bryce Alderson, Caleb Clarke, and Russell Teibert on the first team. Marcus Fraser and Kiradech Aphibarnrat carded matching 5-under 67s on Jumeirah Golf Estates Earth Course to share second place at the ultimate event of the European Tours Final Series. Race to Dubai leader Henrik Stenson shot 4-under 68 to end 18 holes tied for fourth place with Jamie Donaldson and Rafael Cabrera-Bello. Stenson had a chance to reach minus-6 at the par-5 last, but he 3-putted from inside 10 feet to close with a bogey. "You cant win a tournament on Thursday but you can certainly play your way out of it," said Stenson, who is looking to become the first player to win the PGA Tours FedEx Cup and Race to Dubai in the same year. "I would have taken 4-under at the start of the day so I just have to let the disappointment of the last slip away." Ian Poulter, who is fourth in the Race to Dubai standings, shot 3-under 69. He is tied for seventh place with Thongchai Jaidee and Thorbjorn Olesen. "I am annoyed," Poulter said. "I made two putts which were outside birdie chances and took a couple more but the rest were missed. I am frustrated but happy to be only three behind (the lead)." The top nine players in the Race to Dubai standings still have a chance to win the title, but only Stenson, Justin Rose and Graeme McDowell control their own fate. If Stenson, Rose or McDowell win this tournament, they will win the Race to Dubai, regardless of where anyonne else finishes.dddddddddddd Rose is tied for 10th after an opening-round 70, while McDowell shares 27th at even-par 72. Canizares hasnt won on the European Tour since earning his maiden title in 2006. At 54th in the standings, the Spaniard has no chance to win the Race to Dubai, but that didnt stop him from starting fast on Thursday. Out with the morning wave, Canizares mixed seven birdies and a bogey to set the early clubhouse mark. The lead remained intact, though Stenson nearly pulled even. Stenson was flawless until the last, picking up shots at the third, fifth, seventh, 10th and 16th, where he rolled home a 25-footer to reach 5-under. A tie with Canizares seemed probable when Stenson dropped his third shot within 10 feet at the last, but three putts from there denied the 37-year-old Swede a share of the lead. "It has been a lot of hard work all season and I just let my focus slip on the last," said Stenson. "That sucks, but I am still in good shape and playing nicely. The guys are running on fumes so everybody is looking forward to getting done." NOTES: Stenson leads Rose by 213,468 points in the Race to Dubai. McDowell trails Stenson by 321,800 points. ARLINGTON, Texas -- All-Star pitcher Yu Darvish checked out OK after being struck on the top of the head by a batted ball while throwing in the outfield during batting practice Tuesday. The Texas Rangers said Darvish was examined by team physician Dr. Keith Meister before Tuesday nights game against Houston, and that "everything appears to be OK." Darvish is expected to make his scheduled start Wednesday night in the series finale against the Astros. But the Rangers said Darvish would be re-evaluated before the game as a precaution. Responding on Twitter to an article about the incident, Darvish indicated that he was OK. He resumed throwing a few minutes after the incident, and didnt see Meister until after that. Darvish had just made a throw when he was struck by the batted ball. Clearly stunned, the Japanese ace dropped into a squat momentarily before getting up, wiping his brow and appearing to check his head with his fingers. He then put his cap back on and finished his throwing session off flat ground in right field with other pitchers. Rangers left-hander Derek Holland was shagging balls in front of Darvish. The ball glanced off Hollands glove before hitting Darvish. "I heard it," Holland said. "I was supposed to be protecting him but I just couldnt get to the ball. It was too high. I didnt get high enough. Hes fine." Darvish, who joined Kenny Rogers as the only three-time All-Star pitchers for the Rangers, is 8-4 with a 2.63 ERA in 16 starts this season. His 134 strikeouts are fifth in the majors, but his 11 strikeouts per nine innings are the most. Wednesday is Darvishs last scheduled appearance before the All-Star break. Before his expected start last Thursday was pushed back a day because of weather concerns in Baltimore, the right-hander had been on track to start Sunday in the last game before the break. A pitcher who works Sunday cannot throw in the All-Star game. Ernie Banks Jersey . "Its way better than running gassers, thats for sure," the inside linebacker said Monday, when the Chargers started their third and final week of organized team activities, which are practices in shorts, jerseys and helmets. Until Monday, Teo had been working on a side field with other players recovering from injuries. He had surgery on his right foot in late January. "Im very confident coming into the off-season and today was a great day to be out with the guys," he said. His rookie season got off to a slow start after he injured his foot in the exhibition opener. At the time, the team said it was a sprain but after the season, Teo said it was a stress fracture. "Its getting there," the former Notre Dame star said. "Today was my first day out and it felt pretty good and we are going to continue to work and get better so Im not taking any steps back." Asked to what extent the injury bothered him last year, he said: "Every NFL player, you are never fully healthy. You just make sure you are able to do what you got to do on Sundays and I was able to do what I was able to do and now Im looking forward to this year with a year under my belt and it will be good." After missing the first three regular-season games, Teo started the finaal 14 games, plus the two playoff games.dddddddddddd He was credited with 93 tackles in the regular season. Teo said hes about four or five pounds lighter than last season. "Im a little lighter than I was last year," he said. "A lot of people think Im heavier because Im bigger. I feel good. I feel in control and that is something as a football player that is very, very important." He said he wanted to get "more explosive and stronger. Obviously, it was a little tricky with my foot so we really focused on the muscles around it and got the work necessary and when my foot stated to progress and get better, I was able to do more things with my feet. Everything is a process and now I can start focusing on other things: my drops, getting out of breaks and closing speed and all that good stuff. It is a very exciting time." After practice, coach Mike McCoy aired out his team for several minutes. At one point, he invoked the loss at Denver in the divisional round of the playoffs. "We set a standard around here for whats acceptable and whats not," McCoy said later. "There are certain things you like and certain things you dont like." Tight end Antonio Gates hasnt been at the practices that have been open to the media. McCoy wouldnt say if the absence was medical related. "Gates is accountable for," the coach said. ' ' '
Montreal, QC (SportsNetwork.com) - Frederik Andersen made 23 saves and the Anaheim Ducks beat the Montreal Canadiens 2-1 on Thursday night for their eighth win in nine games. Hampus Lindholm and Matt Beleskey scored for the Ducks, who were coming off a 6-2 loss to Toronto on Tuesday, which snapped their seven-game winning streak. Beleskeys winner came 8:33 into the third period, his 15th goal of the season. David Desharnais scored for the Canadiens, who had a three-game winning streak snapped. Carey Price gave up two goals on 23 shots. It was a good game. We competed, said Montreal coach Michel Therrien. We had good scoring chances. I liked our work ethic against a first place team. But we just didnt score on the chances we had. The Canadiens lost after honoring longtime captain Saku Koivu with a tribute before the game. Koivu played his first 13 seasons with Montreal, missing almost all of the 2001-02 season while he battled non-Hodgkin lymphoma. He retired in September after spending his last five seasons with the Ducks. During a speech on the ice, he thanked fans, former teammates and the doctors who helped him beat cancer and offered condolences to the family of Canadiens legend Jean Beliveau, who died two weeks ago, saying Beliveau represented to him what the captain of a hockey team should be. Max Pacioretty, Montreals leading scorer, left the game in the third period after he was checked from behind into the boards by Anaheim defenseman Clayton Stoner. Pacioretty was several feet from the boards in the Ducks zone when he was hit from behind by Stoner after releasing a pass. The check sent Pacioretty flying into the glass, with his head area appearing to strike first. Was it a late hit? I havent had a chance to see it, Stoner said. I hope hes alright. I didnt have any intentions to hurt him. He was on the ice for a bit before skating slowly off the ice with 15:40 remaining in the period. Stoner was not whistled for a penalty on the play but got a five-minute major a little later after fighting Brandon Prust. Lindholms slap shot from the high left side gave the Ducks a 1-0 lead 8:16 into the game, beating Price into the top of the net. After a scoreless second period, Desharnais tied the game for Montreal on a power play at 5:27 of the third with a one-timer from the right side off Andrei Markovs pass. The Ducks re-gained the lead four seconds after a power play expired when Beleskey, moving through the right circle, swept a one-timer into the top of the net off Rickard Rakells pass from behind the blue line. HEROES Evander Kane – The Jets left winger returned to action last week and delivered his best game of the season last night against Pittsburgh. He notched a Gordie Howe Hat Trick (goal, assist, fight against Penguins D Simon Despres), and generated 13 shot attempts, with six shots on goal in Winnipeg’s 4-3 shootout loss to Pittsburgh. Craig Anderson – The Ottawa goaltender moved into the league lead with a .948 save percentage following his 35-save shutout against Minnesota. It was the fourth time this season that the Wild, who have a 7-5 record, have lost a game while outshooting their opponent by double digits. Dougie Hamilton – Taking on a bigger role on the injury-ravaged Boston blueline, Hamilton led the Bruins to a 5-2 win over Edmonton, tallying a goal and two assists. Hamilton has 10 points in 15 games this season, playing a career-high 22:51 per game, and his 57.2% Corsi is best among Boston’s regulars on the blueline (minimum 100 5-on-5minutes). Michalek(1 shot attempts for, 13 against, 7.1%) was worst of the bunch, followed by Zibanejad (1 for, 12 against, 7.7%) and Chiasson (2 for, 11 against, 15.4%). Zibanejad, Michalek and fellow Sens forwards David Legwand and Mark Stone did not register a single shot attempt between them. Stars Not Shining – Veteran C Shawn Horcoff and LW Erik Cole were boxed into their own zone against Nashville, with Horcoff (5 for, 23 against, 17.9%) and Cole (4 for, 18 against, 18.2%) running into the most trouble when matched against the Predators’ top line of C Mike Ribeiro, LW Filip Forsberg and RW James Neal. Mikael Granlund – Despite starting 87.5% of his even-strength shifts in the offensive zone at Ottawa, the Wild centre was held without a single shot attempt in 19:30 of ice time. SHORT SHIFTS Blues RW Vladimir Tarasenko and LW Jaden Schwartz each had a goal and an assist at New Jersey. Tarasenko now has eight goals and 11 points in the past six games…Bruins C Carl Soderberg and RW Loui Eriksson and RW Reilly Smith each had a goal and an assist in a 5-2 win over Edmonton. Soderberg is Boston’s leading scorer, with 12 points in 15 games…Penguins agitator Steve Downie had a goal and an assist in 8:52 of ice time and C Brandon Sutter had a goal and two assists in a 4-3 shootout win at Winnipeg…Senators rookie LW Mike Hoffman had a goal and an assist in a 3-0 win over Minnesota. Hoffman’s 12.82 shots per 60 minutes is far-and-away best on the Sens. With a goal and an assist at Colorado, Maple Leafs RW Phil Kessel is within one point of Penguins C Sidney Crosby and Flyers RW Jakub Voracek for the league scoring lead…Islanders G Chad Johnson stopped 28 of 29 shots in a 2-1 shootout win at Los Angeles…Canucks G Ryan Miller stopped 34 of 36 shots in a 3-2 win at San Jose…Kings LW Marian Gaborik was held without a shot attempt in 16:47 vs. the Islanders. LINEUP NEED TO KNOW Justin Williams – Los Angeles’ possession ace is dealing with an eye injury, so the Kings inserted Jordan Nolan to the top line, with Anze Kopitar and Marian Gaborik, against the Islanders. Paul Stastny – Returned to the Blues lineup for his first game in three weeks and didn’t register a shot attempt in 15:37 of ice time, playing mostly with Alexander Steen and Joakim Lindstrom, at New Jersey.dddddddddddd Morgan Rielly – The second-year rearguard was a healthy scratch in Colorado Thursday, making room for rookie Stuart Percy in the lineup. Jake Gardiner – The Maple Leafs defenceman suffered a bone bruise on his knee after blocking a shot, and was forced to leave after playing 2:55 at Colorado. As a result, Dion Phaneuf played 31:07, his most in a regular-season game since January 26, 2013. Roman Polak played 28:12, his highest time on ice since January 2, 2009. Daniel Winnik – A recent addition to Toronto’s top line, Winnik lasted one shift at Colorado before falling awkwardly after a neutral zone hit and requiring a stretcher to leave the ice. With Winnik out, the Leafs gave Leo Komaro and Richard Panik opportunities to play with Kessel and Nazem Kadri. Ryane Clowe – The Devils winger left Thursday night’s game against St. Louis with an injury and the Devils aren’t providing additional information. If Clowe is out for some time, the Devils may have to dip into their farm system, having already promoted wingers Steve Bernier and Mike Sislo. Adam Henrique – Tied for the Devils’ scoring lead, with nine points in 12 games, Henrique is out with a lower-body injury. Ales Hemsky – Played a season-high 18:34 for the Stars as Dallas shuffled up lines, moving Patrick Eaves to the top line with Jamie Benn and Tyler Seguin, while Hemsky skated with Jason Spezza and Valeri Nichushkin. Avalanche Deployment - It may be a mere one-game statistical oddity, but the Avalanche started fourth-liners Marc-Andre Cliche, Cody McLeod and Maxime Talbot in the offensive zone for more than 60% of their shifts against the Maple Leafs, while Nathan MacKinnon, Gabriel Landeskog and Jarome Iginla started 27.2% of their even-strength shifts in the offensive zone. That doesn’t seem to be optimal asset utilization. FIRSTS Cedric Paquette – The Lightning rookie centre scored the first two goals of his career in a 5-2 win over Calgary. Iiro Pakarinen – The 23-year-old Oilers right winger played in his first NHL game, after putting up eight points in seven AHL games, and played all of 5:50 in Boston. A seventh-round pick of the Panthers in 2011, Pakarinen was signed by the Oilers as a free agent in the summer, after scoring 20 goals and 30 points in 60 games for HIFK of the Finnish League last season. Keith Kinkaid – The 25-year-old out of Union College made his NHL debut, playing 10 minutes in relief of Cory Schneider against St. Louis. The Devils have sent vet Scott Clemmensen to the AHL and are giving Kinkaid, who had a .931 save percentage in his first six games of the season for Albany (AHL), a shot at the backup role. Mike Sislo – An undrafted free agent out of the University of New Hampshire, Sislo has played three-plus years in the AHL for the Devils and registered his first career NHL point, in his 15th career game, with an assist against St. Louis Thursday. FANTASY FOCUS A few players in action tonight that you may want in your lineup: Tom Wilson – He’s known for his toughness, but the second-year winger has three points in the past two games and is playing more for the Capitals, with a recent move to the top line, with Alex Ovechkin and Nicklas Backstrom, a particularly enticing opportunity. Elias Lindholm – The second-year Hurricanes centre is starting to produce, with five points in the past three games, and he’s played more than 16 minutes in four of the past five games. Tomas Tatar – Hasn’t recorded an assist yet this season, and had only one goal through nine games, but has lit the lamp three times in the past four games, splitting time between lines with Pavel Datsyuk and Justin Abdelkader or Riley Sheahan and Gustav Nyquist. RIFU, Japan -- Unsettled Liverpool striker Luis Suarez scored for an impressive Uruguay in their 4-2 friendly win against Japan on Wednesday. Suarez capitalized on some calamitous defending by the hosts to stroke home Uruguays third goal seven minutes into the second half. Diego Forlans two goals, including a fine free-kick, earlier gave the visitors a comfortable halftime lead. Manchester Uniteds Shinji Kagawa scored a tap-in to pull one back soon after Suarezs effort, but Alvaro Gonzalez restored Uruguays three-goal advantage following a goalkeeping error by Eiji Kawashima. Keisuke Honda responded with a free-kick to make it 4-2. Suarez spent the summer pushing for a move away from Liverpool, but a newspaper in his home country on Wednesday quoted him as having had a change of heart and deciding to stay. Japan, who lost all three of their Confederations Cup games in Brazil this summer, were back to full strength but remain far from convincing ahead of next years World Cup finals. "We havent learned our lessons (from the Confederations Cup). There is still a lot to work on before the World Cup," Kagawa said. Japan coach Alberto Zaccheroni, meanwhile, praised the strength of the opposition. "You have to give credit to Uruguay," said Zaccheroni. "They are one of the best teams in the world. They showed that again by reaching the Confederations Cup semifinals this year." Air Max 270 React Bauhaus AT6174-002 . Nike Air Max 270 Triple White Womens . Appearing on TSN 690 Monday afternoon, Mike Babcock said he had conversations with both P.K. Subban and Carey Price about those on-ice traits during Hockey Canadas summer orientation camp. Mike Babcock: McGill experience, P.Its not fair to ask Troy Smith to become the next Anthony Calvillo. Its barely fair to ask a Ricky Ray or Travis Lulay - veteran pivots with Grey Cups and Most Outstanding Player awards to their name - to assume the role of face of the league and greatest active player. So its really not fair for a quarterback with four career starts in the CFL under his belt - albeit promising ones - to be put under that spotlight. But, as the de facto replacement for Calvillo in Montreal, fairly or not that could be the measuring stick for Smith. A more realistic expectation, and one Smith has a shot at living up to, is a solid quarterback that gives the team a chance to win week in and week out. After relieving Josh Neiswander (no longer with the team) midway through a late season game, Smith never looked back in guiding the Alouettes into the playoffs and briefly flirting with second place in the division and a home playoff date. His numbers in his short stint as starter were encouraging. While his completion percentage was just a shade over 50 percent, he threw nine touchdowns to just five interceptions and averaged nearly 300 passing yards per contest. And while his stat line from Montreals lone playoff game (14-26, 142 yards, 1 TD, 1 INT) was far from impressive, the poise and leadership he displayed - factoring in nerves, inexperience, and all the rhetoric attached to a rookie making his first postseason appearance - was heartening for Alouettes fans. But that composure really isnt all that surprising for a Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback with tangible NFL experience. Following a strong four-year career at Ohio State, two years as a starter, Smith was awarded the 2007 Heisman Trophy and then embarked on a four-year NFL career, finishing with 1,734 passing yards and 11 combined touchdowns. If youre apt to use the term pedigree to predict future success, a quarterback like Smith would surely fit the bill. And now for the best news of all in relations to Smiths chances of succeeding as a CFL quarterback: Montreals stacked receiving corps. Injuries to Jamel Richardson, proven long ago to be a bona fide stud receiver, opened the door for S.J. Green to elevate his status from very good to great last season; while Duron Carter demonstrated hes very much Pro Football Hall of Famer Chris Carters son in his CFL debut season. Health permitting, Smith will be throwing to receivers with a combined eight 1,000 yard receiving seasons, and four double-digit touchdowns seasons. And Carter almost added to that total in just 12 games last year (enjoy him while you can; the 23-year-old will be making plays in the NFL next season). With those three thoroughbreds in tow, former NFL star and notorious headline stealer Chad Johnson should be battling for fourth on the import receiving depth chart at best. Its of couurse hard to predict how Smith will do this season and in future years, other than to say hell be hard-pressed to make Als fans forget Calvillo anytime soon.dddddddddddd. There have been several quarterbacks of the future the past number of seasons in the CFL, few of them (less than nine!) have panned out. But Smith has everything youd seem to want to at least take your shot with him. And thats likely what the Alouettes will do. Notes Calvillo Retires 2013 marked the end of an era as Anthony Calvillo, perhaps the greatest CFL quarterback of all time, retired after 20 seasons. The majority of Calvillos career was spent in Montreal, as were the majority of his 79,816 career passing yards (a professional record) and his 455 career touchdown passes (a CFL record). Calvillo also won three Grey Cups and three Most Outstanding Player awards with the Alouettes. Expansion Draft The Alouettes lost three young players to the Ottawa Redblacks in Decembers expansion draft, none more valuable than versatile FB Patrick Lavoie, who was making a name for himself in the two years he spent with Montreal. The Als also lost DT Moton Hopkins and LB Jordan Verdone. Free Agency Montreal was once again quiet on the free agent market, deciding against bidding on any of the top names available. Free agency will be known more for when the team lost some talent, highlighted by LB Shea Emrys departure to Toronto, but GM Jim Popp did make sure to lock up some important pieces, highlighted by the re-signing of LT Josh Bourke. Return man Larry Taylor was also traded for during this period. Higgins Hired Up until Tom Higgins was hired to coach the team, it was unknown if Montreal would hire a coach or just let Popp continue on in the interim role. The Higgins hiring was strange also because GM Popp appeared to not be a part of the interviewing process for Higgins. Quatre-Vingt Cinq Despite an already solid receiving corps, the Alouettes added some more sizzle by signing former NFLer/headline-maker Chad Johnson to a contract in April. The transaction may be as much a publicity stunt as it is a solid football move but Johnson showed up to Montreal in good shape, in high spirits, and looking like he still has some football left to play. Offensive Line Losses Montreal lost two mainstays of their offensive line in the off-season when Andrew Woodruff and Scott Flory announced their retirements. CFL Draft The team helped to replenish their offensive line in the first round of the draft by selecting David Foucault from Montreal. The rest of the draft saw Montreal select Queens DB Andrew Lue 10th overall, Guelph DL Jeffrey Finley 22nd overall, York DL James Tuck 31st overall, Manitoba WR Andrew Smith 35th overall, Manitoba K/P Nick Boyd 43rd overall, Sherbrooke FB Jean-Christophe Beaulieu 49th overall, and Calgary WR Mackenzie Sarro 58th overall. PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh Penguins acknowledge theyve been getting by more on talent than discipline recently even as theyve soared to the top of the Eastern Conference standings. The perpetually rebuilding Florida Panthers have no such luxury. On Monday night, the Panthers hard work made up the difference. Drew Shore scored twice for the first multi-goal game of his career and the Panthers ended Pittsburghs club-record 13-game home winning streak with a 5-1 victory. "It was a big game," Shore said. "We kind of treated it like a playoff game. We only had a couple more games until the (Olympic) break so we wanted to make a strong push." Jonathan Huberdeau, Dmitry Kulikov and Shawn Matthias also scored for the Panthers, who won in Pittsburgh for the first time in five years. Scott Clemmensen stopped 35 shots in his first start in three weeks as Florida ended a two-game losing streak. "I asked them for 60 minutes and 200 feet," Florida coach Peter Horachek said. Pittsburgh coach Dan Bylsma received neither. Matt Niskanen scored the only goal for the Penguins as Pittsburgh lost at home for the first time since Nov. 13. Marc-Andre Fleury made 23 saves but fell for only the fourth time in his past 37 starts at Consol Energy Center. "We were just awful," Niskanen said. "Bad execution. Bad work ethic. We just werent hungry enough to win the loose puck battle and they just beat the (stuffing) out of us." Pittsburgh defenceman Paul Martin played 20 minutes in his return from a broken leg, clearing the way for him to play for Team USA in the Olympics. Forwards James Neal, Chuck Kobasew and Jayson Megna also returned from injuries as the Penguins -- already with a comfortable 13-point cushion in the Metropolitan Division -- continue to get healthy with the Olympic break looming. While it may take a game or two for the Penguins to adjust to the familiar faces, they dont necessarily view it as an excuse. "Were assimilating players back into our lineup ... but thats not a new challenge for this group," Bylsma said. "Its not a new challenge for our team." Neither is winning in Pittsburgh for the Panthers. But Florida beat the Penguins for the second time in three meetings behind Clemmensen, a resurgent penalty kill that has gone a franchise-record 10 games without allowing a goal and some unlikely offensive contributions. "I dont think we got lucky tonight," Clemmensen said. "I think we just willed it a little bit. It doesnt always go your way obviously. You stick with it and nights like tonight happen." Shore entered with just four goals in 54 career games and has spent most of this season in the American Hockey League. Still, he scored twice in less than 20 minutes to stake Florida to an early lead that was more than enough to end Pittsburghs two-month run of perfection. The Penguins entered the night having trailed barely 10 per cent of the time at home since their streak began. A significant chunk came in last weeks 4-3 comeback victory over Washington, when they rallied from a goal down three times to escape. It was the kind of game thats popped up frequently since Christmas, where Pittsburghs high-powered offence was able to overcome some uncharacteristic lapses at the other end of the rink. The miscues finally caught up with them. A rare breakdown by the leagues top power-play unit gave Shore the chance to stake Florida to an early lead. Clemmensen stopped Evgeni Malkins shot, then passed to Shore to spark a two-on-one that ended with Shore flicking a wrist shot over Fleurys shoulder 15:46 into the first period. The Panthers had three opportunities in the second to double their lead only to let three straight power plays go to waste before Shore struck again. Huberdeau stripped a Penguin behind the Pittsburgh net, slid the puck to Jesse Winchester, who found a streaking Shore down the slot. The wrist shot caromed off Fleurys shoulder and into the net to make it 2-0 at 13:34 of the second. Kulikov pushed the Florida lead to 3-0 by taking a long bounce off the end boards then beating Fleury just 1:17 into the third. Niskanens seventh goal of the season 5:11 into the period briefly gave the Penguins some energy, but it faded when Huberdeau and Matthias scored 12 seconds apart to send the Panthers to the upset. NOTES: Pittsburgh went 0 for 3 on the power play. ... The Panthers have killed 31 straight penalties. ... Florida is 10-0-1 when leading after two periods. ... Pittsburgh hosts Montreal on Wednesday. ... The Panthers play at Buffalo on Tuesday. Evan Longoria Rays Jersey . Griffin made his first 12 free throws and finished 14 for 17 from the foul line. The three-time All-Star, who entered this season a 61.1 per cent career free throw shooter, has made 80.6 per cent of his attempts over his last eight games and raised his season mark to 70 per cent. Chris Paul had 21 points, 10 rebounds and nine assists for Los Angeles. Shooting guard Jamal Crawford missed his first five shots and finished 4 for 16 with 13 points after averaging 20 points and 40.3 per cent shooting from the field in seven games after he was inserted into the starting lineup. The Clippers, coming off a pair of narrow road losses to Golden State and Portland -- the latter in overtime -- havent lost three in a row yet this season. Enes Kanter had 17 points off the bench for the Jazz, including a 16-footer with 4:20 remaining -- their last field goal of the game. Utahs 9-24 record is the second-worst in the NBA and just 1 1/2 games ahead of Milwaukee. Derrick Favours, who made the game-winning dunk off an offensive rebound in the final seconds of Utahs 105-103 home win over the languishing Lakers on Friday night, had four points and nine rebounds during a foul-plagued 22 minutes before fouling out with 1:19 to play. Thee Clippers closed it out with an 8-0 run triggered by Griffins go-ahead dunk with 2:25 remaining.dddddddddddd Utah led 43-42 at halftime despite 11 turnovers that were converted into 15 points. The Clippers, who committed a season-low six turnovers in Thursday nights loss to the Trail Blazers, had four in the first 1 1/2 minutes against the Jazz and finished with 13. Three of the early miscues were by Griffin, whose second foul landed him on the bench with 7:54 left in the opening quarter. Los Angeles missed all six shots from 3-point range before the break, the third time this season the Clippers were blanked from behind the arc in an entire half. They didnt connect from long range until their seventh attempt, when Crawford drained one from the right elbow 14 seconds into the third quarter for his first field goal of the game. The Clippers have beaten Utah seven straight times, after losing 11 of the previous 12 meetings. The winning streak matches their longest against the Jazz (Nov. 3, 1979 to Dec. 20, 1980). NOTES: Griffin became the fourth player to score at least 30 points against the Jazz, joining Kevin Durant (42), James Harden (37) and LeBron James (30). ... Jefferson, born in Los Angeles, is averaging 14.6 points in 28 career games against the Clippers. ... Pauls 111 double-doubles are the most by any point guard since the start of the 2010-11 season. (SportsNetwork.com) - The Raptors continued to roll with Tuesdays 103-93 victory at Washington thanks to Kyle Lowrys 24 points and 10 assists. "I just was getting more looks, trying to attack a little more," said Lowry. "That first game out of the break is always tough and I didnt want to let that be an excuse for us to lose the game." DeMar DeRozan, Amir Johnson and Greivis Vasquez scored 14 points apiece, and both Patrick Patterson and Jonas Valanciunas netted 10. The Raptors made 42- of-74 shots (56.8 percent) and have won three straight and nine of the last 13 contests. Toronto now leads the Atlantic Division by four games ahead of Brooklyn and will open a three-game homestand Wednesday versus Chicago, Cleveland and Orlando. The Raptors have won three in a row at home and are 14-10 at Air Canada Centre. Since Jan. 1, the Dinos are 9-2 as the host. However, Bulls head coach Tom Thibodeau deserves a lot of credit for keeping his team competitive through the course of the season. Thibodeau hopes that success carries over in the post All-Star break schedule, starting with Wednesdays road matchup in Toronto. The Bulls and Raptors are jockeying for playoff positioning in the Eastern Conference, as Chicago sits fourth in the standings -- 1 1/2 games behind Toronto. Chicago, which has dealt with a litany of injuries, including the loss of guard Derrick Rose, headed to the break with three straight wins and a 15-7 record since Jan. 2. In last Thursdays 92-76 triumph over the Brooklyn Nets, a 10-point advantage (29-19) after the first quarter set the tone and the Bulls later scored a 23-15 edge in the final stanza. Taj Gibson, who was filling in for Carlos Boozer in the starting lineup, led the way with 16 points off the bench. Boozer had missed three straight games with a calf injury and returned to post 15 points and 10 rebounds. Mike Dunleavy, Jimmy Butler and All-Star Joakim Noah all scored 14 points with Noah grabbing 13 rebounds. "We have to look at our team in totality. For us to achieve, we need Carlos to play well. With our depth up front, we have three starters and they all have to sacrifice," Tom Thibodeau. Noah has pulled down 10 or more rebounds in 23 of his last 24 games, and tallied eight points, five boards and five assists in the All-Star Game. "I had a great time. Im a little tired, but theres time to rest," Noah said of All-Star weekend. "The court is always the best part. It always feels good to win no matter what situation. I like competing. It was fun." The Bulls are last in the NBA offensively with 92.3 ppg, but are second in opponents scoring at 92.3 ppg. Opposing teams are shooting just 43.4 percent against the Bulls, who are 12-15 on the road and recently went 3-3 on a recent trip. Meanwhile, East teams have a 5-10 record north of the border this season. The Raptors have won twice in three meetings with Chicago this season, but dropped a 96-80 decision at home back on Nov. 15. The Bulls have won nine of the past 14 overall matchups in this series and are 13-6 in the previous 19 trips to Air Canada Centre. The Oakland Athletics have swiped most the attention back after taking over the best record in the majors this summer. And when the two teams met for the first time this season, both continued to head in opposite directions. Jesse Chavez matched a career high with nine strikeouts in six innings, and three relievers pitched scoreless ball to lead the As past the Giants 5-0 on Monday night for their fifth straight win. "Its exciting to be part of the Oakland Athletics right now," said third baseman Josh Donaldson, one of six As players named to the AL All-Star team. The As have been among baseballs best and most consistent clubs all season. Then they made a surprising trade to get right-handers Jeff Samardzija and Jason Hammel from the Chicago Cubs on Friday for three minor leaguers, including top prospect Addison Russell. Oakland also leads the majors with their All-Star selections, the clubs most since 1975. Sundays announcement didnt even include Samardzija, who was selected as a National League All-Star but is ineligible to play. The banged-up Giants, on the other hand, had lost 18 of 23 to fall out of first place in the NL West -- where they once held a 9 1/2-game lead over the Dodgers -- but showed signs of coming out of their slump by winning two in a row at San Diego over the weekend. Instead, the two-time defending AL West champion As put together the kind of all-around effort theyve had most of the season in the Bay Bridge Series opener. Alberto Callaspo hit a two-run double, and three others drove in a run to power the As in front of an announced sellout crowd of 36,067 festive fans at the Coliseum. The worn-down stadium had a colorful sprinkling of green and gold from Oakland revelers mixed with the orange and black of San Francisco supporters -- many of whom left before the final out. Chavez (7-5) allowed four hits and two walks to help extend the As record to a major-league best 56-33. Fernando Abad, Dan Otero and Ryan Cook shut down San Francisco the final three innings. "We all like to feed off each other," Chavez said. "Were just playing good baseball, and were excited to be back home.dddddddddddd" Ryan Vogelsong (5-6) lost his third straight start for the Giants, who had just five hits. The right-hander gave up five hits and three runs in 5 1-3 innings. He struck out four, walked two and hit a pair of batters, leading to the As first two runs. Oakland started its scoring surge after home plate umpire Paul Nauert ruled Craig Gentry was hit by a pitch on his hand leading off the fifth. Giants manager Bruce Bochy challenged the play, which was upheld after a video review. Gentry stole second, advanced to third on Coco Crisps bunt single and scored on John Jasos groundout for the As first run. Josh Donaldson also was hit by a pitch by Vogelsong on his left hand leading off the sixth. Nauert originally called it a strike before seeing Donaldsons hand swell. Then Nauert asked first base umpire Angel Hernandez if Donaldson, who said his hand was just sore afterward, swung at the pitch. Hernandez signalled no, and Bochy came out and had a heated conversation with Nauert after the call, wondering how it could be reversed. "Then it got ugly," Bochy said. Callaspo came through later in the inning with a two-run double off Juan Gutierrez to extend Oaklands lead to 3-0. Brandon Moss and Donaldson each drove in a run off Gutierrez in the seventh after Giants shortstop Brandon Crawford committed two throwing errors. The teams will play in Oakland again on Tuesday night before the series shifts to San Francisco for the final two games. Uniondale, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - Nikolay Kulemin had two goals and an assist and the New York Islanders closed out a hugely successful pre-All-Star- break schedule with a 7-4 decision over the Philadelphia Flyers. John Tavares, Michael Grabner, Josh Bailey and Nick Leddy each scored once and assisted on another in a game the Islanders led from start to finish, with Jaroslav Halak adding 25 saves in the win. New York will enter the break atop the Metropolitan Division with 63 points and a 31-14-1 record. The Islanders put up four of their goals just past the midway mark of the second period, resulting in the Flyers pulling netminder Rob Zepp after he stopped just 16-of-20 shots. Mark Streit, Michael Del Zotto, Claude Giroux and Chris VandeVelde all had goals for the Flyers, while Ray Emery saved 18-of-20 attempts in relief of Zepp. Fake Shoes Free Shipping . LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- The owners of California Chrome are putting all their hopes into the chestnut colt to win the Kentucky Derby. After all, hes the only horse they own. California Chrome, based at lesser-known Los Alamitos racetrack in suburban Los Angeles, is the early 5-2 favourite for Saturdays 140th Derby with good reason. He has won four straight races by a combined 24 1/4 lengths under Victor Espinoza, who won the Derby in 2002 with War Emblem. "Hes so light on his feet," Espinoza said. "He just does things so easy and makes my job easy." California Chromes owners, Steve Coburn and Perry Martin, are no Kentucky blue bloods. Theyre a couple of working stiffs who live near Reno, Nevada. A trainer called them "dumb asses" for getting into the racing game, inspiring the duo to put the letters DAP on their silks, which stands for Dumb Ass Partners. "Were going to go down in history," Coburn predicted. California Chrome is the product of an $8,000 mare and a $2,500 stallion. Hes earned more than $1 million already, making it somewhat easier for Coburn and Martin to turn down a pre-Derby offer of $6 million for a 51 per cent stake in the horse. "Weve been blessed with this colt," Coburn said. "The first time we saw him, we knew it was going to be something special." If their tale seems improbable, well, its happened before at Churchill Downs. Mine That Bird, a 50-1 shot owned and trained by two guys from New Mexico mocked as cowboys, pulled off the stunning upset in the 2009 Derby. At 77, Art Sherman, who oversees California Chrome, would be the oldest trainer to win. His colt would be the first California-bred to wear the garland of red roses in 52 years. "Hes feeling good and hes doing good," Sherman said. "Hes coming up to this race right." Rosie Napravnik wants to grab history, too. No female jockey has won the Derby, although she came closest -- fifth last year. Napravnik will ride 20-1 shot Vicars In Trouble. Her husband, Joe Sharp, works closely with the Louisiana-bred colt as assistant to trainer Mike Maker. "The story wouldd almost be too good if we won it," she said.dddddddddddd Wicked Strong is the early 6-1 second choice. The colt is named for the victims of last years Boston Marathon bombings and is trained by Jimmy Jerkens, who has his first Derby horse. Trainer Todd Pletcher has four horses in the Derby -- Danza and Intense Holiday are both 8-1 while his other two are longer shots, 30-1 Vinceremos and 50-1 We Miss Artie. Danza is named for "Taxi" actor Tony Danza, who planned to attend the Derby. Maker will saddle three horses, all long shots. Besides Vicars In Trouble, he has 15-1 General a Rod and 50-1 Harrys Holiday. "When those gates open, anything can happen," Maker said. Three-time Derby winner Bob Baffert is down to 20-1 shot Chitu after being forced to scratch early second favourite Hoppertunity because of a minor foot problem. "California Chrome has proven hes a really good horse," Baffert said, adding, "Theres a lot of parity in this field. Everybody might have a chance." Getting the ideal trip in the 1 1/4-mile Derby is important, especially with the traffic from 19 horses making a chaotic charge into the first turn. Jockeys want to avoid anything that would prevent their horse from getting into rhythm, like being bumped, cut off or blocked. Sherman believes the key is the first 70 yards. "You want to get out and get yourself some position," he said. Trainer Steve Asmussen takes a shot with Tapiture, who started three times at Churchill Downs as a 2-year-old. Asmussen is under investigation by Kentucky and New York racing officials after an animal rights group alleged he and his former assistant mistreated horses in their care. The forecast calls for sunny skies and a high of 73 degrees, with a crowd of at least 140,000 expected. Keep an eye on jockey Calvin Borel. He and 15-1 shot Ride On Curlin will break from the No. 18 spot in the starting gate. Borel will try to hustle the colt over to his favourite path on the track -- the rail. The rider nicknamed "Bo-rail" for his fence-skimming rides has three Derby wins in the last seven years. ' ' '
KISSIMMEE, Fla. -- Halfway through his six spring training appearances, R.A. Dickey feels like an old pitcher with a new beginning. "Its like getting to start over and do it the right way. You feel like youre getting a chance to reboot," Dickey said Sunday after pitching five shutout innings for the Toronto Blue Jays in a 4-3 exhibition loss to the Houston Astros. "It makes you somewhat regret not being able to invest the time that was really needed last year." Dickeys first spring with the Blue Jays was interrupted by the World Baseball Classic. A year after winning the NL Cy Young Award with the New York Mets in 2012, he went 4-7 through May with a 5.18 ERA. "You dont know that in the moment, and youre getting to do a really fantastic honour," he recalled, "but having spent a lot of time with my guys on the team and getting to prepare my body, (this spring) just feels normal." Dickey threw 82 pitches in five innings in his third spring start, giving up four hits and a walk while striking out four. He plans to get up to 95-100 pitches in his next two starts, then perhaps dial it back for his final spring outing before pitching in the season-opening series at Tampa Bay. "Being older, I know what I need to do to prepare, and this is one of the things that helps me feel confident when I take the mound, knowing that Ive gone deep in games in the spring," he said. "That way when it happens during the season Im able to do it right from the get-go and not have to build into it. It works for me. Everybodys different." Marwin Gonzalez and Carlos Perez drove in runs for the Astros in the eighth inning off losing pitcher Jeremy Jeffress. Jason Castro hit a two-run homer for the Astros in the sixth. The Blue Jays took a 3-2 lead in the eighth on a play in which the Astros lost a replay challenge for the second straight day. Steve Tolleson beat a close play at the plate, scoring on a double by Erik Kratz. "If its that close, then its definitely worth challenging because theres no telling what angle they may end up getting that can actually overturn it," Houston manager Bo Porter said. STARTING TIME BLUE JAYS: Asked about the diminished expectations for the Blue Jays this season, Dickey deadpanned: "I think were terrible, and I dont want anybody to take us seriously. I think because of last year, were probably going to get walked all over every game." ASTROS: Rudy Owens, a 26-year-old left-hander who has yet to pitch in the major leagues, matched zeroes with Dickey for three innings, giving up one hit. "I never faced that calibre of hitters, but its something Ive dealt with and Ive been doing for my entire career," he said. "Its time for me to step up and I did." TRAINERS ROOM Toronto manager John Gibbons on the post-Tommy John surgery outlook of pitcher Drew Huthison: "You dont even think of Tommy John; modern medicine is so good. Its almost like when you draft these guys and sign em, do Tommy John right away because sometimes they end up better than they were to begin with." NICE IMPRESSION Kratz drove in two runs with a single and a double while catching Dickeys knuckleball for five innings. "Calling knuckleballs is an anxious proposition so hes got to navigate that some. He did a good job," Dickey said. Johnny Pesky Jersey . DALLAS -- Dirk Nowitzki passed Jerry West on the NBA scoring list from a familiar spot: behind the 3-point line. Nowitzki had 19 points, including consecutive shots from long range in the third quarter to move up to 16th in career scoring, and the Dallas Mavericks beat the Washington Wizards 105-95 Tuesday night. The 7-foot German will go down as the best-shooting big man in league history whenever he retires, so it was fitting that the 35-year-old was 26 feet from the basket when he supplanted the man whose silhouette serves the NBA logo. "Jerry is the man," said Nowitzki, who finished the night with 25,197 points and now goes after Reggie Miller for 15th at 25,279 points. "He is the logo and that says it all. It has been a great ride." Trevor Ariza led the Wizards with 27 points, including five 3-pointers. He also had seven rebounds and four steals. Monta Ellis started slowly from the field before scoring 10 in the fourth quarter to help the Mavericks improve to 4-0 at home this season. Ellis matched Nowitzki with 19. The Nowitzki was struggling from the field before a loose ball bounced to him above the key. The 11-time All-Star and 2007 MVP grabbed it, turned and hit a shot to get within a point of Wests record. On Dallas next possession, Gal Mekel passed to Nowitzki a few feet left of the previous spot, and Nowitzki pulled up and hit another from long range with 59.9 seconds left in the third. That bucket gave him 16 points for the game and put him ahead of West, who scored 25,192 in 14 seasons with the Los Angeles Lakers from 1960-74. He went on to become their general manager and later a Memphis Grizzlies executive. Nowitzki, who is in his 16th season, ended up 8 of 19 from the field with eight rebounds, two assists and two steals. "Yeah, I suppose it was (fitting), although Jerry West never shot a 3," Dallas coach Rick Carlisle said. "If there had been a 3-point line back then, this milestone would have come later. Hes going to pass more big names in the weeks and months to come." Vince Carter scored 16, and Samuel Dalembert led Dallas with 13 points in the first half and finished with 15. DeJuan Blair had nine points and 11 rebounds. Marcin Gortat had 12 points and 12 rebounds for Washington. The Wizards had their last lead early in the second quarter, but were down just 89-84 when Ellis hit a pull-up jumper and was fouled by Bradley Beal, who was held to nine points on 2-of-10 shooting two nights after scoring a career-high 34 in an overtime loss at Oklahoma City. "Thats the confusing part," Beal said. "We played so aggressively and so hard against OKC. It was like Game 7 of the finals or something. Then now, we come out tonight and not have that same mentality." Ellis bucket over Beal was his first shot of the fourth quarter after he had gone 3 of 10 through the first three. Ellis missed the free throw, but the Wizards couldnt convert on three chances at the other end. After Nene lost the ball out of bounds trying to make a post move, Shawn Marion hit a runner to put Dallas back up by nine. "Hes going to keep attacking," Nowitzki said of Ellis. "All good scorers in this league are like that. He was phenomenal in the fourth quarter. He kept that cushion for us." Nowitzki hit a runner to give the Mavericks their biggest lead at 71-56, but the Wizards went on an 18-6 run to make it a game again. Ariza had 11 points during the run, including a 3-pointer and a dunk on consecutive possessions. John Wall had assists on five straight buckets during the spurt and finished with 10. Wall and Nene scored 14 apiece. Carter started a 16-2 Dallas run in the second quarter with a 3-pointer, and Ellis finished it with a nifty reverse layup to put the Mavericks up 49-38. After the Wizards got within four, Jose Calderon made a 3-pointer and Carter hit another 3 at the shot clock buzzer to give Dallas a 59-49 lead in the final minute of the first half. Carter was 4 of 9 from long range. The Mavericks scored seven points in one trip late in the first quarter to turn a 29-23 deficit into a 30-29 lead. Jae Crowder was fouled on a driving bank shot and missed the free throw, but DeJuan Blair grabbed the rebound before hitting a shot and getting fouled. His missed free throw was tipped by Carter to Mekel, who passed back to Carter for a 3-pointer from the left wing. "Thats just commitment to rebounding," Washington coach Randy Wittman said. "Just not ready. I dont know what to say about that. Inexcusable." NOTES: The teams combined to shoot 60 per cent in a 67-point first quarter, which ended with the Wizards in front 34-33. ... Bryan Colangelo abruptly stepped down from his role with the Raptors on Wednesday, ending their brief experiment as co-presidents of the squad. "Having had a better chance to reflect on things for the past several weeks, I have concluded that stepping away from my position is the best course of action for the organization and everyone involved," Colangelo said in a press release Wednesday. The Raptors said Colangelo will remain as a consultant with the team and with Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment Ltd. The 48-year-old Colangelo lost his job as general manager in May, after the Raptors went 34-48 and failed to make the playoffs for the fifth consecutive season. He remained as president in a non-basketball role, while Ujiri was hired as general manager and president of basketball operations. Ujiri insisted at his opening news conference there would be no problems working with the man who was once his mentor in Toronto. "Theres no issue with Bryan Colangelo," Ujiri said at his introductory news conference earlier this month. "No issue. None whatsoever. Zero zero issue. None." He did however make it clear who was running the team now. "Ill take Bryans input when I feel its necessary, Wayne (Embry, Raptors senior advisor) has always been a great mentor to me," Ujiri said.dddddddddddd "But at the end of the day, Im going to put my staff together and were going to figure this all out collectively. But basketball decisions are going to be my decisions, so it doesnt matter who tells me what or how its done, at the end of the day, Im sitting right here on the hot seat." Ujiri, who worked under Colangelo as Torontos assistant GM from 2008 to 2010, signed what was reported to be a five-year, US$15 million dollar deal with the Raptors this month. Ujiri, who was named the 2013 NBA executive of the year, left his post as GM of the Denver Nuggets to come to Toronto. Colangelo was honoured with that award in 2007 when the Raptors won its only Atlantic Division title in franchise history. Since then, Toronto has not had a winning season. The Raptors began the 2012-2013 season with high hopes, having acquired dynamic point guard Kyle Lowry from the Houston Rockets and shooting guard Landry Fields from the New York Knicks via off-season trades, and adding their 2011 first-round draft pick Jonas Valanciunas to the roster. But despite a promising lineup, the Raptors began the 2012-2013 season on a shaky start, winning just four of its first 23 games. ' ' '
CALGARY -- Former Calgary Stampeders owner Sig Gutsche passed away on Saturday at age 63. The team announced his death on Sunday in a statement. Gutsche took over the Calgary franchise on April 3, 1996 and owned the Stampeders until 2001. His tenure as club owner was marked by success on and off the field. The Stampeders were in financial difficulty when Gutsche bought the club, but in his six years as owner he stabilized it. At the same time, Calgary posted a combined 67-40-1 record, finishing first in its division three times, reaching five West Division finals and winning Grey Cups in 1998 and 2001. "The Stampeders and football fans in Calgary will forever owe a debt of gratitude to Sig for his passion and commitment to the franchise," said Stan Schwartz, the Stampeders executive vice-president and consultant to the executive committee. "He came on as owner at a very crucial juncture and helped the Stamps through very difficult times. We offer our deepest condolences to Sigs family." Gutsche was also instrumental in the establishment of the Calgary Stampeder Alumni Charitable Foundation. PITTSBURGH -- Pittsburgh Pirates second baseman Neil Walker understands not everybody is going to be a fan of Major League Baseballs expanded replay system, which threatens to slow down a sport that already struggles to be played with any sort of urgency. Funny, there werent many critics to be found on Monday at PNC Park. Walker homered off Carlos Villanueva leading off the 10th inning, and the Pirates benefited from an overturned to call to beat the Chicago Cubs 1-0. The Pittsburgh native turned on a Villanueva changeup and sent it sailing over the Clemente Wall in right field for the first walk-off of his career and the first by the Pirates on opening day since Bob Bailey homered off San Franciscos Juan Marichal in a 1-0, 10-inning victory in 1965. "This one feels pretty special," Walker said. "This is a special day for this team, this organization. Weve come a long way." So has the game. After spending decades fighting the advances of technology, Major League Baseball has embraced the concept. Many calls can be challenged this season under an expanded system, and both teams wasted little time putting umpires to work. The Cubs made history by initiating the first review under the new guidelines. Chicago manager Rick Renteria challenged a double-play call in the top of the fifth following a demonstrative "safe" call by Jeff Samardzija following a poorly executed sacrifice bunt attempt. First base umpire Bob Davidsons decision was confirmed on replay. "It was a combination of Samardzjias reaction and what we were looking at," Renteria said. "Were still trying to figure out what clear and compelling evidence is. Its a work in progress." Chicagos luck with replay didnt get any better later. A safe call on a pickoff attempt by Bryan Morris (1-0) with one out in the top of the 10th was reversed after Pirates manager Clint Hurdle requested a replay, sending Chicagos Emilio Bonifacio back to the dugout after a delay of 2 1/2 minutes. "Most of the time on pickoffs, its got to be very noticeable for the umpire," Morris said. "Those bang-bang plays are always going to go to the runner. I guess thats why its good to have replay." The largest regular season crowd in PNC Parks 14-season history (39,833) roared its approval. The din only grew louder when Walkers drive to right field finished halfway up the seats. That capped a giddy day for a team freed from two decades of losing after a breakout 2013 in which it won 94 games and made the playoffs for the first time since 1992. Former Pittsburgh star Barry Bonds presented centerfielder Andrew McCutchen with the NL MVP award that McCutchen earned last year. Bonds received mixed reviews, though the vitriol that accompanied his late career visits to Pittsburgh while playing for San Francisco was noticeably absent. Bonifacio went 4 for 5 for Chicago, but the Cubs were 0 for 11 with runners in scoring position and wasted a fine start by Samardzija, who scattered five hits over seven innings. "I was happy with the way I kept the ball down in the strike zone," Samardzija said. "It helped to get the double plays because they made the overall outing look a little better than it really was." Travis Ishikawa had two of the six hits by Pittsburgh. Starter Francisco Liriano tied a team record shared by three other pitchers for most strikeouts on opening day by fanning 10 in six innings. While he struggled with his command -- needing 104 pitches to get 18 outs -- he was sharp when he needed to be and Pittsburghs bullpen did the rest. That assertion is getting harder and harder to make, especially given the way 23-year-old Danilo Gallinari has been playing this season. ANAHEIM, Calif. -- About two hours after Yoenis Cespedes made a defensive play for the ages, Collin Cowgill decided not to watch while the Oakland left fielder chased after his long drive in the 14th inning. Cespedes couldnt do a thing about this one as Cowgill delivered another resilient win for the Los Angeles Angels. Cowgill hit a two-out homer, and the Angels outlasted the Oakland Athletics 2-1 on Tuesday night for their fifth consecutive victory. The Angels bounced back after Cespedes kept it tied in the eighth with a throw that will be a fixture on highlight reels for years, cutting down Howie Kendrick at the plate with a 300-foot heave on the fly from deep down the left-field line. After five ensuing scoreless innings, Cowgill abruptly connected against Jeff Francis (0-1), driving a two-strike pitch just over Cespedes head into the bullpens beyond left field. "I was just hoping it had enough on it to get it over his head," said Cowgill, who had three hits. "That guy has made some incredible plays on us the last couple of times." Josh Hamilton drove in Mike Trout in the sixth for the Angels, who trimmed Oaklands lead in the AL West to 2 1/2 games. The Angels could have ended it earlier, but Albert Pujols and Kendrick both were thrown out at the plate -- although it was tough to blame Kendrick after Cespedes made his mind-boggling throw in the eighth. "Hes capable of doing just about anything on the baseball field, and thats just another example," said Jed Lowrie, who drove in Oaklands only run. The Cuban left fielder bobbled Trouts double and chased it down before his soaring throw went straight to catcher Derek Norris to nip Kendrick, who had already rounded third when Cespedes released it. "When that ball rolled to the corner, I thought Howie was going to score standing up," Angels manager Mike Scioscia said. "He threw a guided missile that was right on the money." Cory Rasmus (2-0) pitched two hitless innings for Los Angeles maligned bullpen, which yielded one run in eight excellent innings even without closer Ernesto Frieri, who had pitched in four straight games. Nick Punto doubled and scored on Lowries sacrifice fly in the eighth for the AL-leading As, who have lost four of six. "Hey, what can you ddo?" manager Bob Melvin said.dddddddddddd "They played as hard as they could, both teams did. After a while, everybody is trying to win it with one swing. Unfortunately, we werent at our best today offensively." Pitching and defence dominated the latest meeting of Californias division rivals. Neither starting pitcher allowed a runner into scoring position until the sixth. Hector Santiago struck out eight during six innings of three-hit ball in his first start in five weeks for the Angels. Drew Pomeranz pitched seven innings of four-hit ball for the As, allowing only an unearned run. The Angels got a terrific fill-in start from Santiago, recalled from Triple-A Salt Lake after Tyler Skaggs went on the disabled list. Santiago lost his spot in Los Angeles rotation May 7 after going 0-6, but the Angels off-season acquisition from the White Sox limited powerful Oakland to three singles and one walk. "I had clean mechanics and felt like everything was smooth," Santiago said. "Thats what I went down there to work on, and the results came out." Santiago faced no real trouble until the sixth, when he struck out Josh Donaldson to strand two runners. Pomeranz yielded just two singles before Trout drew a leadoff walk in the sixth. Pujols reached on a throwing error when Donaldson, who made three throwing errors from third base Monday, tried to start a double play. Hamiltons single scored Trout, but Pujols ran straight through third-base coach Gary DiSarcinas stop sign and was easily thrown out at the plate. Oakland tied it against reliever Mike Morin after Punto hit a leadoff double. After Cespedes kept it tied, the As put two more runners on in the ninth, but Joe Smith got John Jaso to ground out. NOTES: Angels rookie Cam Bedrosian pitched two extra innings of one-hit relief. He is the 22-year-old son of 1987 NL Cy Young Award winner Steve Bedrosian. ... Angels SS Erick Aybar swung and hit Norris in the back of the head with his follow-through in the fourth. Baltimores Manny Machado twice did the same thing to Norris last weekend, and the As were furious after Machado expressed no remorse when Norris had to leave the game. Aybar immediately checked on Norris, who was fine this time. ... Donaldsons three throwing errors Monday all went to first base. ' ' '
