Beginning this year, athletes in Olympic sports who work with trainers, coaches or agents who have been banned for doping will be in jeopardy of receiving a ban, as well. The most noteworthy of the new rules in the World Anti-Doping Agencys 2015 code is a prohibition from working with people who have been sanctioned themselves. Among those currently banned is Lance Armstrongs one-time trainer, Michele Ferrari. Since he was banned, Ferrari has been photographed meeting with members of other cycling teams.Until the new code went into effect, there was no specific penalty for an athlete who dealt with banned coaches or trainers. Beginning this year, the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency plans to give athletes a warning if theyre dealing with a banned person. After that, the athlete could be sanctioned. These important changes advance the policy to most effectively protect clean athletes rights, health and fair competition, USADA CEO Travis Tygart said. Now, the challenge is to ensure all countries and sports are fully implementing this gold-standard policy to ensure the real winners win.In Italy, where doping is a crime, sports officials are urging law enforcement to get more involved in preventing Ferrari from associating with riders.Last month, investigators sent a file to Italys Olympic committee detailing allegations of Ferraris continued influence on cyclists. In 2006, Ferrari was cleared of criminal charges of distributing banned products to athletes. But he remains barred for life by the Italian Cycling Federation and was also banned for life by USADA in 2012.Another key rules change taking effect this year increases the possible penalty for a first-time doping violation from two to four years. That change came after athletes pushed for the increased penalty for intentional cheaters. Cheap Air Jordan Online . The interim boss, who replaced Sam Allardyce at the helm 11 days ago, enjoyed his first game in charge on Saturday as Daniel Sturridge and Alli struck first-half goals at Wembley to secure a second win from two matches in World Cup qualifying.Southgate handed an international debut to Manchester United forward Lingard, while he played Tottenham midfielder Alli in an advanced role behind the forwards. That meant captain Wayne Rooney was played in central midfield and Southgate was quick to praise all three players after the match. He told Sky Sports: Rooney dictated the play and controlled the game for us. Wayne Rooney played in a deep midfield role We knew wed have a lot of the ball and I think having his experience and leadership, not only today, but to get through whats been a difficult week, has been important for the team.I think number 10 is Deles best position. Hes a super link between the midfield and forwards and he is a goalscorer, thats one of his strengths. Jesse Lingard made his England debut on Saturday I was also delighted with Jesse Lingard. I thought he had an outstanding game. I thought he was really bright, linked the play well and was very creative in a lot of the play that he did.For him it would have been nice to cap that with a goal.Alli, Lingard and Theo Walcott all spurned good chances to extend Englands advantage as they warmed up for Tuesday nights visit to Slovenia. While Southgate was frustrated by the wasteful finishing of his players, he insisted there is more to come in the remaining three matches of his sspell.dddddddddddd Dele Alli scored Englands second goal against Malta I thought we did some very good things, he said.In the first half we moved the ball very well, made several very good chances and took our goals well. CLEVELAND -- Sitting on a stage last week alongside No. 1 overall draft pick Andrew Wiggins and new coach David Blatt, general manager David Griffin said he hoped this would be a monumental off-season for the Cavaliers. Its already been quite a summer. And LeBron James is still out there. Cleveland kept its momentum rolling early Tuesday by getting All-Star point guard Kyrie Irving to agree to a new, five-year, $90 million contract extension. Irvings deal, completed with a handshake in New York with owner Dan Gilbert, cements a commitment with Cleveland that wasnt always so strong. "Im here for the long haul Cleveland!!!! And Im ecstatic!!" Irving wrote on his Twitter account shortly after the agreement was reached. "Super excited and blessed to be here and a part of something special." For months, Irvings future with the Cavs seemed uncertain. There were reports he wasnt happy in Cleveland as well as speculation the Cavs didnt believe he was a cornerstone player. There were trade rumours and rumblings the team was not going to offer him the maximum extension. Whatever differences there may have been seem to have been worked out. Griffin, who likes to refer to his team as "family," has the Cavs united. James surely has noticed. The Cavs have waited four years for their chance to lure the four-time league MVP back home. This may be the perfect time. Because Irvings extension doesnt kick in until the 2015-16 season, the Cavs have room under the salary cap to pursue free agents. They would have to move some other contracts if the reports are accurate that James will only sign for a max deal. Griffin has said clearing space to accommodate a five-year, $120 million contract would be extremely easy. The hard part might be getting James to believe the Cavs, who have not made the playoffs since he left in 2010, are title contenders -- now. Theyve got some quality pieces for sure, but do they have enough? Irving, who played in a career-high 71 games this past season, has established himself as one of the NBAs elite point guards, and now that the contract situation is no longer an issue, it may unburden him to play the best basketball of his life. The 6-foot-8 Wiggins would have been the top pick a year ago if he hadnt gone to college and James has long admired the 19-year-olds gifts. Its somewhat interesting that Griffin said Wiggins potential greatness would come at shooting guard, perhaps leaving an opening at small forward for a certain former Cavalier. To entice James, the Cavs may need to make a blockbuster move. Theyve got some assets to play with and a trade involving talented guard Dion Waiters could bring back a starter. Griffin hinted that he isnt done remodeling the Cavs. "We need to continue to work on the defensive side of the ball," he said at Wiggins introductory news conference. "We need to get better from a basketball IQ standpoint, from a shooting perspective. And all of those moves will be forthcoming." For several years, the Cavs have been involved in trade rumours involving Kevin Love, who has one year left on his deal with Minnesota. If Cleveland can package the right pieces together, they may be able to pry Love away from the Timberwolves. Love and James were teammates four years ago in the London Olympics, where they helped the U.S. win a gold medal. Back then, James said that when he won his first championship with Miami, his thoughts quickly shifted to Cleveland and what might have been. "I wish I could have won one there," he said before a practice. "I could only imagine how the parade would have been down East Ninth Street. Of course I thought about it because Cleveland helped me get to that point. The days that I spent there helped me get to the point where I was able to finally win one. Its just unfortunate I wasnt able to do it there." Its possible James will re-sign with the Heat and the Cavs will move on without him. But if they decide to pursue the two-time champion in the days ahead and get a meeting with James, the Cavs can sell their team and tug at his heart. James has never rejected the idea of a return to Cleveland. Maybe this is the summer to mend fences and start anew in a familiar place. Dillon Peters Jersey . The Big Nog vs Big Country bout is the talk of the MMA world right now but that is not the reason for this article. My seventh week of fight ready fitness had me arguing flexibility and conditioning with a few people. The comment that got me riled up was that Heavyweights run out of gas all the time. That turned into them also not being able to do jujitsu, they arent flexible or able to move. Well Ive been working on my conditioning, and I wont be testing it in the octagon any time soon but it did have me jump to the defense of Cain Velasquez, Junior Dos Santos, and Roy Nelson, all three high level athletes and all with enough gas in the tank to get some outstanding fights on their highlight reels. It wasnt just the decision that they werent fit. Thats a product of their training practices. Lots of heavyweights have a problem pushing themselves on conditioning because they dont have partners who can last in training. What got to me was the flexibility comment. There are a lot of jujitsu experts who are small, and flexible. They make it look easy to wrap people up, and bend in strange ways. Thats not usually the case with heavyweights. However, there are people who work at changing the paradigm. Frank Mir, and Big Nog are both prime examples. Watch them move while they fight, it is impressive. To prove the flexibility issue, I posted a picture on my Instagram @fitcityjordan. Its me attempting the splits. Im actually not too far off. Im going to spend the last little bit of my training time here doing Yoga, specifically something called Joga. Its a newer form of Yoga focused at athletes. Ive done a few classes, and Im impressed at how much it focuses on an athletes need to move, and flush lactic acid post training. Im hoping the next picture I post on Instagram of me doing the splits will be right to the floor. Im 63 and right now between 218 and 220lbs. It depends on the meal the night before. Before you go judging an athlete, start giving the training some time. Get out and sign up for kickboxing. Spend a few evenings rolling on the jujitsu mats, and yes head to Yoga. I found Sandy Grewinski at Yoga Public in Winnipeg. Her coaching style and the Yoga Public facility are the best addition to my wellness and total fitness that Ive found in a long time. Go find your new best friends. They are probably Yoga people. Nicest people youll ever meet. Something to be said for trying to live stress free. Nike Air Max Plus Tn Ultra Customize . NEW YORK -- Former Tennessee Titans running back Chris Johnson visited the New York Jets on Tuesday, a person familiar with the situation told The Associated Press. Johnson was released by the Titans on April 7, three days after the team informed him of the decision. The former 2,000-yard rusher met with the Jets at their facility and took a physical, according to the person who spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because the team doesnt make player visits public. The running back attended the Knicks-Nets basketball game in Brooklyn on Tuesday night, and told reporters that his visit with the Jets "went well," but he wasnt ready to make a decision. The Jets were the first team Johnson has met with since becoming a free agent. Johnson spent six years at Tennessee and became one of the NFLs most exciting and dangerously fast running backs. The Jets are looking to add another playmaker to their backfield and envision Johnson teaming with Chris Ivory and Bilal Powell. Johnson, who turns 29 in September, is only the sixth player to rush for 1,000 yards in each of his first six seasons. But there have been questions about whether hell ever be the same player who rushed for 2,006 yards in 2009, when he earned his "CJ2K" nickname. Johnson finished with 1,077 yards -- the second-lowest total of his career -- and a career-worst 3.9-yard average last season. He also rushed for 100 or more yards just twice, including the regular-season finale in which he had 127 yards to go over the 1,000-yard mark. ESPN first reported Johnsons visit with the Jets on Tuesday. While his days as a workhorse running back -- he carried the ball more than 300 times in 2009 and 2010 -- might be over, Johnson could be the perfect complement in coach Rex Ryans backfield. Under new offensive co-ordinator Marty Mornhinweg, the Jets finished sixth in the league in rushing last year with Ivory and Powell sharing the load. Despite the solid production, New York is still looking to improve the position with a big-time runner who could serve as a potential No. 1 back with the powerful Ivory and versatile Powell creating a three-headed backfield. The Jets also have Mike Goodson, who is dealing with legal issues and recovering from torn knee ligaments, and Alex Green. The Titans cut ties with Johnson to avoid paying the $8 million he was due for this season, along with the final three seasons left on the $53.5 million contract he signed in 2011. Johnson, who set several franchise and NFL records during his time in Tennessee, repeatedly said he wouldnt take a pay cut this off-season. That prompted the Titans to unsuccessfully explore trade options this off-season. Johnsons exit appeared inevitable when Tennessee signed Dexter McCluster to a three-year deal and re-signed Leon Washington to join Shonn Greene in the backfield. After being told of Tennessees intentions to cut him, Johnson thanked the Titans and their fans. "I have grown so much as an individual and as teammate over the past few years, and I am excited about the opportunity to bring my experience and talents to a new organization," he said in a statement. The Marlins are confident hell fully recover and be ready for spring training, and they hope to reach a long-term agreement with him.CHICAGO -- Donnie Murphy has thrived in late-game situations over the last month. Murphy capped a four-run seventh inning with a two-run homer as the Chicago Cubs rallied for a 9-7 victory over the Miami Marlins on Wednesday. Since joining the Cubs in early August, Murphy is hitting nearly .400 from the seventh inning on and Wednesdays home run was his sixth in the seventh inning or later. "Ive come through in those situations before and for some reason Im comfortable in em," he said. "I just like the situation. I like the game on the line. Its not pressure on me. Someone else has to throw the pitch over the plate. Its pressure on them sometimes and I just like the situation." Murphy has been one of the few bright spots for the Cubs in an otherwise dismal second half. Since being called up from the minors in early August, hes been one of the teams best hitters and certainly the best clutch hitter. Not bad for a guy who essentially was on baseballs scrapheap this season after bouncing around for much of his career since making his major league debut in 2004. "Throughout the rest of his major league career, hes been hurt and on the (disabled list) and never really got a chance," Cubs manager Dale Sveum said of Murphy. "Hes obviously getting a chance here and is making the most of it." The Cubs certainly made the most of some shaky pitching by the Marlins. Rookie left-hander Brian Flynn lasted just four-plus inning in his debut, giving up three runs on six hits. The bullpen was worse and couldnt protect 6-3 and 7-4 leads. "Theyve been pretty consistent for us all year, but today wasnt one of our better days," Marlins manager Mike Redmond said of his bullpen. The Cubs pounded out four home runs, with Sterlin Castro, Dioner Navarro and Ryan Sweeney adding solo blasts. The Marlins went deep twice. On the strength of a grand slam by Adeiny Hechavarria and a two-run shot by Logan Morrison, they led 7-4 when reliever A.J. Ramos entered the game in the seventh and walked the first two batters he faced, Darwin Barney and Anthony Rizzo. After a passed ball advanced the runners, Navarro hit a dribbler off the end of the bat down the leftt-field line for a single that scored both runners and made it 7-6.dddddddddddd That was all for Ramos as Ryan Webb came on. He didnt fare any better as Murphy, who played with the Marlins last season, hit the first pitch from Webb (2-6) into the left-field bleachers. "I know that guys a sinker ball guy," Murphy said of Webb. "I was looking for a sinker, he gave it to me and I put a pretty good swing on it." The Cubs added an insurance run in the eighth on Castros double. Carlos Villanueva (4-8) got the win. Kevin Gregg, despite walking the potential tying runs on base, worked out of a jam for his 29th save in 34 chances. But, of course, the star of the game was Murphy, who was considered nothing more than a placeholder for the remainder of the season when he arrived but now has to be considered for the future even though hes no youngster at 30. "I dont want to get too far ahead of myself and starting thinking about it a little too much and maybe its affecting my play on the field," he said of next season. "I dont want to do that, but at the same time, its at that part in September when it does start to get in the back of your mind a little bit more." NOTES: Before the game, the Cubs claimed RHP Daniel Bard off waivers from the Boston Red Sox and selected the contract of RHP Chang-Yong Lim from Triple-A Iowa. Bard, 28, was first-round pick (No. 28 overall) of the Red Sox in 2006 and was one of organizations most highly-regarded prospects at one point. To make room on the 40-man roster, the Cubs designated outfielder Cole Gillespie, who originally was in the lineup Wednesday, and RHP Michael Bowden for assignment. ... Rob Brantly, the Marlins opening-day catcher before being sent to the minors, is back with the expanded roster and eager for a second chance. "The biggest problem I had at the beginning of the season was I was trying to do too much," he said. ... Both teams are off on Thursday. The Cubs host the Brewers on with LHP Chris Rusin (2-3) taking on RHP Kyle Lohse (9-8), while the Marlins open a home series against the Nationals with RHP Jose Fernandez (10-6) facing a pitcher to be announced by Washington. He was happy about it, too. Unaware of how hot the free-swinging Indians had been, the Royals left-hander calmly carried a shutout into the eighth inning Tuesday night. Meanwhile, the Kansas City offence hit a season-best three home runs in a 9-5 victory to open their two-game series. "I guess Im glad I didnt know they scored 17 runs last night," said Vargas, who gave up six hits and hit three batters with pitches, but didnt allow a run until Jason Kipnis drove in a pair with a two-out double in the eighth. "You just have to get ahead and execute," he said, "and let the defence do what they do." Eric Hosmer hit a two-run shot and also drove in a run during a four-run fourth inning. Alex Gordon went deep in the eighth and Mike Moustakas added a two-run shot later that inning as the Royals (32-32) moved back to .500 by matching their second-best run total of the season. "Its a good feeling," Moustakas said, "but its not where we want to be." Corey Kluber (6-4), who dominated the Royals earlier this season, allowed six runs -- three earned -- and six hits over five innings. He struck out five and walked two. He was nearly bailed out when Tim Collins gave up another run in the eighth inning and Aaron Crow yielded two more in the ninth. But Crow wound up finishing for his first save of the season. Asdrubal Cabrera, Carlos Santana and David Murphy drove in the other runs for Cleveland. Both starters dominated for the first couple of innings, Vargas using guile to keep Cleveland off balance and Kluber needing just 17 pitches to retire the first six Royals batters. Everything changed in the bottom of the third. Moustakas walked to start things off, and Alcides Escobar followed with a single. Jarrod Dyson then hit a grounder that Kipnis fielded and tossed to Cabrera covering seecond.dddddddddddd But in making the grab and transitioning to his throwing hand, Cabrera dropped the ball. He was still granted an out initially, but replay overturned the umpires call and he was given an error. "When you give teams extra chances, extra opportunities, especially against the middle of the order, sometimes you pay a price for it," Indians manager Terry Francona said. "Obviously, nobody is perfect," Kluber added. "Errors are part of the game." That one loaded the bases for Omar Infante, in the throes of a 1-for-21 slump, and he dropped a single into centre field for a 1-0 lead. Hosmer followed with his RBI groundout, and Billy Butler added a two-run single moments later to make it 4-0. "If we dont win that challenge," Royals manager Ned Yost said, "we lose out on three runs." Hosmer homered in the fifth, his third of the season, and Kluber was yanked after the inning. It was a marked contrast to his last outing against Kansas City, when the right-hander tossed his first career complete game in a 5-1 victory on April 24. Meanwhile, Vargas was mowing down an Indians order that included the scorching Lonnie Chisenhall, who went 5 for 5 with three homers and nine RBIs the previous night in Texas. Vargas even helped himself, snaring a liner in the sixth to start an inning-ending double play. It wasnt until Vargas left the game that the Indians started to rally, and the hole they had dug themselves proved to be far too deep. GLENDALE, Ariz. -- Josh Beckett said he will be ready for the start of the Dodgers season after having a rib removed last July in a surgery to alleviate a nerve condition that was affecting his right arm "I dont have numbness and tingling, anymore," Beckett said Monday. No doubts, either. The right-hander is expected to battle newly acquired Paul Maholm for the fifth spot in the Dodgers starting rotation this spring. Beckett, the fifth starter before last years mid-season surgery, breezed through his first bullpen session Monday in Arizona. He threw 30 pitches with no sign of trouble. "Im not tentative," said Beckett, who reported to camp a day late so he could attend a wedding. "Im going to throw as hard as I can and see what happens. Right now, I feel great. Ill throw the ball until I blow out and Im hoping thats not for a few more years." The Dodgers signing of Maholm on Saturday is considered a hedge against the possibility of further injury to Beckett, a three-time All-Star whom the Dodgers acquired from Boston along with Adrian Gonzalez, Carl Crawford and Nick Punto in a 2012 trade. "Josh is doing really well, but hes coming off tough surgery and theres not a lot of history with that surgery, so well see where things go," Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said. Beckett underwent the same surgical procedure that former St. Louis Cardinals ace Chris Carpenter underwent in July 2012. Carpenter went on to pitch in six more games in 2012 -- three in the regular season and three in the playoffs. But Carpenter did not pitch in 2013. He announced his retirement in November. Beckett said he has spoken to Carpenter. He said he was told Carpenters nerve condition was more severe than his own. Beckett also said the surgery was more complicated. Dr. Greg Pearl of Dallas performed both procedures. Carpenters experience and advice helped, he said. "It got me through the mental part," said Beckett, who was 0-5 with a 5.19 ERA when he landed on the disabled list on May 14. Neck problems and numbness in his right hand had troubled Beckett for the last few years. It got to the point where he learned how to drive with only his left hand. There were times, he said, when he couldnt feel the steering wheel with his right. "Its crazy how simple things become difficult to do," he said. The surgery, which also includes removal of some connective tissue, alleviated pressure on a nerve in his neck, he said. He never felt any pain. But there were moments when he had no control of his pitches. "I didnt know if I was going to throw it over the backstop," he said. "I had no idea where it was going to go." Beckett arrived in camp with his confidence bolstered by three workouts during the last couple of weeks in Texas. He threw off a mound twice, on Jan. 31 and again on Feb 3. Cold weather forced him inside on Feb. 6 where he threw 38 pitches off a flat surface. Beckett has no illusions about the competition he faces in camp. "Its just if hes healthy," Mattingly said. "Josh throws the ball good. Hes been a quality pitcher for a long time and he still has good stuff. How he bounces back, well see. Weve had nothing but positive reports all winter. Josh has never been in the bullpen. Obviously, its a competitive situation. Were not handing anything out for anybody. If hes healthy, well see." Beckett expects to have more time to prepare than the Dodgers calendar might indicate. They break camp in Arizona after a March 16 game and travel to Australia for a pair of regular-season games in Sydney against the Arizona Diamondbacks on March 22 and 23. "Im probably not going to start opening day in Australia," Beckett said. "Theyre paying a guy a lot of money to do that. Not all of us are getting ready for those days. Some of us have a little more time than it appears we do." NOTES: Outfielder Yasiel Puig is already in camp. Mattingly might open the season with the versatile Puig at the top of the Dodgers batting order. .The rest of the team is scheduled to report on Thursday. Cheap NCAA Jerseys China . Fighting a 7-for-43 slide, Braun came through with a game-winning two-run home run in the eighth inning to lift Milwaukee to a 4-2 win over the Cincinnati Reds on Saturday night. Braun hit the ball hard in two of his first three at-bats Saturday, but still made outs. "My swing has gone between terrible and awful the last two weeks," he said. "But thats the way the game of baseball goes sometimes." With one out in the eighth inning, Scooter Gennett ended up with a double after blooping a ball to centre that Billy Hamilton got his glove on but couldnt hold. Braun then drove the first pitch from reliever J.J. Hoover (1-5) over the right field fence for his 10th homer of the season and first since June 1. Francisco Rodriguez pitched a scoreless ninth inning for his 21st save in 23 opportunities. Will Smith (1-0) got the win despite giving up a game-tying home run to Hamilton in the eighth inning. "We know a lot about Hoover and know he likes to throw the fastball," Braun said. "This is definitely encouraging and hopefully I can build off that and get going." Another encouraging sign for the Brewers was the performance of starting pitcher Yovani Gallardo, who went seven innings, allowing one run on six hits and two walks while striking out eight. It was the second straight strong outing for Gallardo, who struck out a season-high eight and allowed four hits in seven innings of a 1-0 victory over Pittsburgh June 8. "I was able to make pitches tonight and get ahead of hitters," he said. Brewers manager Ron Roenicke likes what hes seeing from Gallardo. "Hes definitely on track," Roenicke said. "His curveball was very good and has been for the past two games. If we can get that from him consistently, thats really good." Gallardo needed to be very good Saturday to offset Reds starter Mat Latos, who threw 87 pitches over six shutout innings in his season debut, giving up two hits while striking out four.dddddddddddd He started the season on the disabled list while recovering from elbow and knee surgeries. Latos retired the first four hitters he faced before giving up a single to Aramis Ramirez. He then retired 13 hitters in a row before Gennett outlasted him in a long at-bat with two outs in the sixth inning. Gennett, who several times just got a piece of the ball to stay alive, hit the 13th pitch into left field for a double. Braun then hit a drive to the centre field wall that Hamilton caught, prompting Latos to thrust his fist in the air. Latos said it was emotional to be back on the mound. "It has been a struggle to get where I was today," he said. "It is definitely good. The outcome kind of sucks, but that is baseball. They are in first place for a reason. You just got to come back strong tomorrow." The Reds grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first inning on Brandon Phillips RBI single. The Brewers wasted no time in taking the lead after Latos left the game. Logan Ondrusek walked Jonathan Lucroy to start the seventh inning and Carlos Gomez lined a single. Both runners advanced on Ramirezs fly out and Lucroy scored on Khris Davis groundout. Rickie Weeks then singled to left to give the Brewers a 2-1 lead. Hamilton tied the score in the bottom of the inning with his third home run of the season. NOTES: To make room for Latos on the roster, the Reds put LHP Sean Marshall on the 15-day disabled list with a strained right shoulder. ... The Brewers signed the teams top three draft picks from the draft: LHP Kodi Medeiros, SS Jacob Gatewood and OF Monte Harrison. All three were at Miller Park Saturday and took batting practice before the game. ... The Brewers will start RHP Marco Estrada (5-3) in Sundays series finale against the Reds Mike Leake (3-6). ' ' '

ASHBURN, Va. -- A blogger hired by the Washington Redskins to defend the teams name has quit after two weeks. Ben Tribbett announced his resignation on Twitter late Monday, saying he didnt want to be a distraction because of personal attacks directed toward him. Tribbett is well-known in Virginia politics as an advocate for liberal issues. He is perhaps best known for leading the attacks on Sen. George Allen for using the word "macaca" to describe an American of Indian descent during Allens ill-fated re-election campaign in 2006. Tribbett tweeted that he supports the Redskins name but doesnt "see eye to eye with some friends" over the issue. From the moment Thomas Vanek turned down a reported $50 million contract offer from the New York Islanders, the thought was he has to be moved. Is a deal imminent? Pierre LeBrun: Its not imminent but it could happen before the end of the week, of course we have an Olympic trade freeze Friday at 3pm et. In a perfect world the Islanders would look to divest themselves of that big salary of Vaneks so they dont carry it through the Olympics. But that same big cap number is why some of the contenders – and we know that Los Angeles and Pittsburgh have some interest in Vanek – cant deal yet as they are right at the cap. So it makes this deal difficult before the Olympic freeze. To get Vanek, the asking price is three assets: any combination of a first-round pick, a young player, and a prospect. Whatever the combination, Islanders GM Garth Snow is trying to get his big haul here because we know how much he gave up to get Vanek at the start of the season. Bob McKenzie: The Islanders also have another asset in play in defenceman Andrew MacDonald. Heres a guy that is going to unrestricted free agency at the end of the season, hes only making $550,000 right now, but he leads the NHL in blocked shots. And for the last two seasons hes been the minutes leader for the Islanders. There has been a lot of interest in this player. The Islanders could do a deal with him, maybe between $4 million and $5 million a year, which would be a huge increase on what hes currently making, but the Islanders have lots of young defencemen coming and lots of teams are calling. MacDonalds name is definitely in play. And is one of Thomas Vaneks ex-teammates also drawing interest? McKenzie: That would be Steve Ott of the Buffalo Sabres. We all know that Matt Moulson has been drawing interest, with upwards of a double digit number of teams inquiring about Moulsons availability by the deadline. But Ott is attracting that much, if not more attention than Moulson. Obviously keep an eye on the Sabres, theyre at the bottom of the league and ready to offload people. In addition to Ott and Moulson there is the Ryan Miller scennario playing out but also Henrik Tallinder is another guy who could be moved as well as Drew Stafford and Cody McCormick.dddddddddddd Dave Bolland hasnt played since November 2. Is he still in play? Darren Dreger: Hes an unrestricted free agent at the end of the year, so Dave Nonis and the Toronto Maple Leafs are going to have to figure out what option they want to pursue with Bolland. There are three of them: No. 1 is theyll negotiate relatively soon and find out what his number would be to avoid free agency. No. 2 is if they dont like the number at this stage in the season, they wait and use him as their own rental to push for the playoffs. No. 3, which isnt anywhere near as likely as No.1 but is certainly an option, is to trade Bolland if you know that a deal isnt likely to be made. By all accounts, everything is going to plan for Steven Stamkos. His plan is to play Saturday and then make a decision with Team Canada at that point. What is Team Canada doing to manage the situation if Stamkos cant go? Dreger: First of all, there are a couple hurdles Canada has to get by. No. 1: they want to find out what Wednesdays test results are medically speaking on Stamkos. Either way, expect Team Canada GM Steve Yzerman to reach out to at least a couple, as many as four or five, of the replacement players – Claude Giroux, James Neal, Eric Staal, Martin St. Louis – to put them on standby. Then you look to Saturday and if Stamkos is able to play against the Detroit Red Wings, then thats a great sign. Obviously theyll monitor how he feels post-game, then theyll make the decision as to whether he or somebody else gets on the Sunday charter flight. LeBrun: And theres a Stamkos-like situation playing out in Minnesota, obviously not getting as much attention. Mikko Koivu, the best player on the Finnish Olympic team, may not be able to play. This thing is going down to the wire. We know one thing, hes not going to play for the Wild this week. He hasnt played in a month after ankle surgery. Hes still recovering and skated on Tuesday, having felt better than he has in a couple days. But at the end of the day, be it Friday or Saturday, Koivu has to get together with Minnesota team doctors and the Finnish Olympic team to make a call on whether or not hes fit to play in the Olympics. That would be a gigantic loss for Finland. ' ' '

Cincinnati, OH (SportsNetwork.com) - Jeremy Hill rushed for a career-high 154 yards and two touchdowns on 24 carries in his first career start in place of injured starter Giovani Bernard to lead the Cincinnati Bengals to a 33-23 victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday. A.J. Green, who missed the past three games with a toe injury, caught three passes for 44 yards and a score and Mohamed Sanu finished with a touchdown and 95 yards on four grabs for the Bengals (5-2-1), who have gone 13-0-1 in their last 14 home games. Andy Dalton threw for 233 yards on 19-of-31 attempts with two touchdowns but also was responsible for two interceptions in the win. Blake Bortles completed 22-of-33 passes for 247 yards, two touchdowns to Allen Hurns and one interception for Jacksonville (1-8), which dropped its second straight game since winning its lone game of the season against Cleveland. Hurns ended with 112 yards on seven catches, while Denard Robinson rushed for 94 yards and a score on 17 carries. Final Score: Cleveland 22, Tampa Bay 17 Cleveland, OH (SportsNetwork.com) - Brian Hoyer threw two interceptions for the first time this season, but his two second-half touchdown passes helped the Cleveland Browns edge the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, 22-17. Hoyer passed for a season-high 300 yards on 21-of-34 efficiency for Cleveland (5-3), which entered November above .500 for the first time since 2007. Terrance West and Taylor Gabriel each had a touchdown grab. Hoyer, who beat out first- round draft pick Johnny Manziel for the starting quarterback position during training camp, improved to 8-3 as a starter with Cleveland. Mike Glennon went 17-for-33 for 260 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions for the Bucs (1-7), who have lost four straight games. Three of those losses came by six points or less. Mike Evans racked up seven catches for 124 yards and two touchdowns and Bobby Rainey gained 121 yards from scrimmage in defeat. Final Score: Arizona 28, Dallas 17 Arlington, TX (SportsNetwork.com) - Carson Palmer threw three touchdown passes and the Arizona Cardinals took advantage of Tony Romos absence in recording a 28-17 win over the reeling Dallas Cowboys at AT&T Stadium. With Romo held out after sustaining two small fractures in his back during Mondays overtime loss to Washington, the Cowboys offense wasnt the same with backup Brandon Weeden at the controls. Dallas (6-3) mustered a meager 266 total yards and didnt produce an offensive touchdown until Dez Bryants 3- yard touchdown grab from Weeden with 1:08 remaining. Weeden completed just 18-of-33 passes for 183 yards and tossed a pair of interceptions, while Bryant -- shadowed by Patrick Peterson for most of the game -- didnt register a catch until the late TD drive. The Cardinals third-ranked run defense also limited DeMarco Murray to 79 yards on 19 carries, the first time the star running back was held under 100 in nine outings this season. Palmer shook off an early interception that Tyler Patmon returned 58 yards for a touchdown to finish 22-of-34 for 249 yards for the NFC-leading Cardinals (7-1), who ended a string of 14 consecutive regular-season losses in Dallas and are off to their best eight-game start since 1974. Andre Ellington totaled 95 rushing yards on 21 attempts in the win, while adding 39 yards and a touchdown on four receptions. Final Score: Philadelphia 31, Houston 21 Houston, TX (SportsNetwork.com) - Jeremy Maclin racked up 158 yards and a pair of touchdowns on six receptions, as the Philadelphia Eagles gutted out a 31-21 decision over the Houston Texans on Sunday despite losing starting quarterback Nick Foles. Foles began the game completing 10-of-13 passes for 124 yards with one score and a pick before leaving due to an apparent shoulder injury after one quarter. Mark Sanchez ended up 15-of-22 for 202 yards, two TDs and two interceptions for the Eagles (6-2), who shook off a loss last week in Arizona and ascended to the top of the NFC East after Dallas lost at home to the Cardinals. LeSean McCoy contributed 117 yards on 23 carries, while Chris Polk added a touchdown run and Jordan Matthews posted a TD reception for the visitors. Ryan Fitzpatrick finished with 203 yards and an interception on 13-of-27 passing, but threw TD strikes to DeAndre Hopkins and Arian Foster for the Texans (4-5), who fell to 0-4 all-time against Philadelphia. Hopkins totaled 115 yards on six catches, with Foster adding 56 yards on 15 carries and 63 yards on a pair of receptions in defeat. Final Score: Kansas City 24, NY Jets 10 Kansas City, MO (SportsNetwork.com) - Alex Smith threw two touchdown passes and the Kansas City Chiefs handed the New York Jets their eighth straight defeat with a 24-10 victory. Smith completed 21-of-31 passes for 199 yards for the Chiefs (5-3), who have won three in a row. Jamaal Charles carried 20 times for 78 yards and a score for Kansas City. Travis Kelce and Anthony Fasano each caught a touchdown pass from Smith. Michael Vick connected on 21-of-28 passes for 196 yards and one touchdown in his first start as a member of the Jets (1-8), who have lost eight in a row for the first time since opening 0-8 in 1996. He left the game briefly in the fourth quarter after taking a hard hit and slamming his head on the ground. Geno Smith had been New Yorks starting quarterback in all 24 games since he was drafted in the second round of last years draft. He was benched last week against the Bills after throwing three interceptions in the first quarter and inactive this week with a shoulder injury, with Jets head coach Rex Ryan making the switch to Vick on Monday. Ryan said after Sundays loss that Vick will start next week against Pittsburgh. Percy Harvin caught 11 passes for 129 yards in his second game as a Jet. Eric Decker hauled in nine passes for 63 yards and a score. Final Score: Miami 37, San Diego 0 Miami, FL (SportsNetwork.com) - Maybe the Chargers thought their bye was this week. San Diego will actually be off next week and will have plenty of time to think about a humbling 37-0 loss at Miami on Sunday. Ryan Tannehill threw for 288 yards and three touchdowns in just three quarters of work for the Dolphins (5-3), who completely dominated en route to their third straight win. It was Miamis most efficient outing of the season and clearly San Diegos worst. The Chargers (5-4) have lost three in a row and were blanked for the first time since a 34-0 loss at Kansas City on Oct. 31, 1999. The Dolphins racked up 441 yards of offense and the defense came up with three interceptions of Philip Rivers, as Miami pitched its first shutout since a 21-0 win over New England on Dec. 10, 2006. Tannehill completed 24-of-34 passes without an interception and was Miamis second-leading rusher with 47 yards on four carries. He left in favor of Matt Moore to start the fourth quarter. Rivers exited the contest late in the third quarter after completing just 12-of-23 passes for 138 yards. He was also sacked three times and lost a fumble, as San Diego managed only 178 total yards and a mere 10 first downs. Final Score: Minnesota 29, Washington 26 Minneapolis, MN (SportsNetwork.com) - Matt Asiatas third touchdown of the game led the Minnesota Vikings to a 29-26 victory over the Washington Redskins on Sunday. Asiata finished the game with just 26 yards on 10 carries and also converted a two-point attempt. Teddy Bridgewater went 26-for-42 for 268 yards with a touchdown for the Vikings (4-5), who head into their bye week having won two straight games. Robert Griffin III returned to play for the first time since Week 2 and was 18-for-28 for 251 yards with one touchdown and an interception for the Redskins (3-6), who had won their previous two games. Final Score: St. Louis 13, San Francisco 10 Santa Clara, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Twice in the games final seconds, the 49ers were within inches of victory. But Michael Crabtree rolled out-of- bounds inside the 1-yard line and Colin Kaepernick fumbled on the goal line, as the St. Louis Rams went into Levis Stadium and stunned San Francisco, 13-10, in an NFC West showdown. Greg Zuerlein put the Rams (3-5) in front with a field goal midway through the fourth. Kaepernick started the final drive with a 25-yard pitch-and-catch to Stevie Johnson and a penalty on Lamarcus Joyner gave the 49ers another first down out of the two-minute warning. Later in the drive, Crabtree drew two straight penalties -- a pass interference and defensive holding -- on Trumaine Johnson to set up 1st-and- goal for the Niners with 42 seconds left. Kaepernick rolled right and hit Crabtree near the goal line on first down, but he had to go to the ground to make the catch and rolled out-of-bounds inches before crossing the plane. A booth review confirmed the call. Kaepernicks second down pass sailed out of the back of the end zone, and the ball popped free on his QB sneak on third down. James Laurinaitis recovered the fumble at the bottom of the pile, sealing the outcome. Austin Davis was less than stellar guiding St. Louis offense, throwing for just 105 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions. His 8-yard dump off to Benny Cunningham on 3rd-and-10 put Zuerlein in a better position to kick his eventual game-winning field goal. Kaepernick completed 22-of-33 for 237 yards with a touchdown pass to Anquan Boldin, who made six catches for 93 yards. The 49ers (4-4) have dropped consecutive games following a three-game winning streak. Final Score: New England 43, Denver 21 Foxboro, MA (SportsNetwork.com) - On the scoreboard as well as the stat sheet, Tom Brady got the best of Peyton Manning once again. With Brady tossing four touchdown passes and his New England teammates coming up with two pivotal interceptions of Manning, the Patriots continued their midseason roll with a 43-21 blowout of the Denver Broncos in matchup of AFC powerhouses. This highly anticipated showdown between last seasons conference title game participants turned out to be not much of a contest at all, thanks to Bradys precision passing and a number of miscues from the reigning AFC champion Broncos. In addition to Mannings two picks that were both converted into New England touchdowns, Denver (6-2) committed 10 penalties, gave up an 84-yard punt return to Julian Edelman and was stopped four times on fourth down to have a four-game win streak come to an end. Those errors were most costly during a second quarter in which the Patriots put up 24 unanswered points to build a commanding 27-7 halftime lead. Brady, now 11-5 all-time in head-to-head matchups with Manning, did his part by completing 33-of-53 attempts for 333 yards with one interception. Rob Gronkowski caught nine passes for 105 yards and one of Bradys scoring strikes, with Edelman adding nine receptions totaling 89 yards with a touchdown along with his huge punt return. New England (7-2) has averaged 40.2 points in ripping off five straight victories since a 41-14 loss at Kansas City in Week 4. Manning did put up 438 passing yards and two touchdowns on a 34-of-57 completion rate, but endured a mostly frustrating afternoon as the Patriots dominated the final three quarters. Emmanuel Sanders finished with 151 yards on 10 catches and Ronnie Hillman scored a pair of touchdowns for Denver. Demaryius Thomas compiled 127 yards on seven grabs in the loss. Final Score: Seattle 30, Oakland 24 Seattle, WA (SportsNetwork.com) - Beast Mode needed a big push to score his first touchdown. The Seattle Seahawks needed a little extra to get past the winless Oakland Raiders. Marshawn Lynch scored two touchdowns in the first half, the first after his teammates shoved him into the end zone, and the Seahawks recovered an onside kick at the end of the game to hold off the Raiders for a 30-24 win on Sunday. Lynchs two scores and Bruce Irvins 35- yard touchdown on an interception return helped the Seahawks (5-3) build a 24-3 lead in the first half. Later, a couple of Steven Hauschka field goals in the fourth quarter gave them the cushion they needed after the Raiders (0-8) scored two touchdowns in the third, including one on a blocked punt. Derek Carrs second 1-yard touchdown pass to Mychal Rivera came with 1:52 left in the game but the Raiders couldnt recover an onside kick attempt even after it went through the hands of Seattle tight end Cooper Helfet. Lynch had 21 carries and five catches for 143 combined yards for the Seahawks, who played at CenturyLink Field for the first time since a 30-23 loss to Dallas on Oct. 12. They havent dropped back-to-back games at home in more than two years. The Raiders have lost 14 in a row going into next Sundays game against Peyton Manning and AFC West-leading Denver. Carr passed for 194 yards and threw two interceptions that led to 10 Seattle points in the first half. Russell Wilson passed for 179 yards and rushed for another 31 for Seattle, which stayed within two games of NFC West-leading Arizona. Final Score: Pittsburgh 43, Baltimore 23 Pittsburgh, PA (SportsNetwork.com) - Make it a dozen touchdown passes in two games for Ben Roethlisberger. Its been a resurgence for his Pittsburgh Steelers offense since their lackluster Week 2 showing in Baltimore, when they didnt tally any. Roethlisberger tossed six touchdown passes and the Steelers routed the Ravens 43-23 on Sunday night. Roethlisbergers 12 touchdown passes in consecutive weeks is the most in NFL history. Big Ben went 40-of-49 for 522 yards -- the third most in a regulation game in NFL history -- and six touchdowns last Sunday, making him the first ever quarterback with two 500-plus yard games. He followed that performance up by going 25-of-37 for 340 yards. Roethlisbergers 30-game stretch with a TD pass came to a halt in Week 2 when the Ravens thumped the Steelers 26-6. But that seems like centuries ago. Pittsburgh has scored 94 points in its last two games and topped the 50-point plateau for the first time since 1984 in last Sundays 51-34 victory over Indianapolis. Antonio Brown caught 11 passes for 144 yards and a touchdown, while rookie Martavis Bryant hauled in three receptions for 44 yards and two scores for the Steelers (6-3), who have won three in a row. Joe Flacco was 30-of-45 for 303 yards with two touchdowns and an interception for Baltimore (5-4), which has dropped consecutive games and sit in last place in the AFC North. THURSDAY, OCTOBER 30 Final Score: New Orleans 28, Carolina 10 Charlotte, NC (SportsNetwork.com) - New Orleans followed up Sunday nights drubbing of Green Bay with another impressive showing. Except this one came on the road. And it put the Saints on top of the so-so NFC South. Mark Ingram ran for 100 yards and a pair of touchdowns and New Orleans defeated the Carolina Panthers 28-10 on Thursday night. The Saints broke a scoreless deadlock by scoring on three straight possessions in between the second and third quarters to build a 21-7 advantage and cruised the rest of the way en route to ending their seven-game, regular-season road losing streak. Following a career-high 172 rush yards Sunday, Ingram topped the 100-yard mark again after tallying just one 100-yard rushing performance prior in his first 40 games. Drew Brees was 24-of-34 for 297 yards with a touchdown and an interception and added a rushing score for the Saints (4-4), who have bounced back from a 1-3 start by winning three of their last four contests. Jimmy Graham caught seven passes for 83 yards and a score, while Kenny Stills added five receptions for 72 yards in the triumph. Junior Galette recorded two of New Orleans four sacks and its defense held Cam Newton to just 151 yards passing with an interception on just 10-of-28 efficiency. Newton carried the ball seven times for 43 yards and a touchdown for Carolina (3-5-1), which accumulated just 231 total yards. The Panthers are 1-5-1 since a 2-0 start. Vapormax 2019 Discount .Y. - Referee Ed Hochuli referred to replay official Tom Sifferman by his nickname Jungle Boy, which was heard on the in-stadium microphone during the Arizona Cardinals-Carolina Panthers NFC wild-card game Saturday.DZ: So whats a more unrealistic move on a golf course. A full run-up drive, or putting with a hockey stick?SA: Probably...actually both are not unrealistic, I can do both. The hardest part would be putting. Because of the stick, and how long the face is itself. And of course its going to be opening and closing when you hit it, so theres a bigger miss there in that respect. DZ: I think wed like to see you try that (laughs)SA: I think the hardest one would be that move from Tin Cup. DZ: Ive never seen Tin Cup.SA: Youve never seen Tin Cup? Oh you gotta go see Tin Cup, with Kevin Costner. So hes throwing balls up, and hes hitting them with a spade.(Courtesy: Golf Dream Network)DZ: Yeah, that sounds harder (laughs)SA: Oh yeah, and hes putting with it, the spade. That ones a little more unrealistic (laughs).DZ: Alright so Im going to give you three outlandish golf accessories, which would you be most okay with the PGA giving the golfers a thumbs up to use. The golf bag boom box from caddy shack, drink dispensing driver, or thirdly, The Uro-Club? Have you heard of that one?SA: No?DZ: Essentially its for if you have to relieve yourself on the golf course, it allows you to go off and do so comfortably.SA: Probably the third one (laughs).DZ: Have you ever needed something like that on the golf course where you were like "okay I cant leave now, but Id love to have that club in my bag (laughs).SA: Yeah, definitely! (laughs)DZ: Have you seen the episode of the Simpsons where Mr. Burns faces Homer in golf? SA: Never seen that episode before.DZ: Pretty much Mr. Smithers is caddying for Mr. Burns, and no matter where his ball lands, he spots it in a more favourable position. Have you ever played a game outside of professional competition with a similar type of player, who wasnt too honest with their ball placement? (laughs)SA: Umm, yeah. Probably the last person I was playing trying to get his money (laughs). There are a few people that do that all the time. It woulda been...I dont even wanna name names. Jim Keneir of all people (laughs).DZ: Have you ever done something like that before, in like a friendly game (laughs)?SA: Yes, dropped one, then threw one in the water and said "now Im just going to take this one" (laughs). Although we do have that mulligan on the first hole. (Courtesy: PGA.com)DZ: So the 17th hole at TPC Sawgrass, obviously a well known hole. If they were to add one of these three mini golf features to the 17th hole, which do you think would succeed at making it the hardest hole on tour? The Windmill, the up and down clown mouth, or a full loop?SA: Ohh, which one would I add to that one...the windmill.DZ: If the PGA held a full 18-hole mini-golf Major, who do you think would come out on top, and how would you fair? Featuring all of the crazy features we just talked about, so youd obviously have to be pretty crafty with the putter. SA: Crafty, and also very open minded to everything else. So probably the younger guys, over the older gguys, because the older guys are too old school (laughs).dddddddddddd DZ: How do you think you would do?SA: Probably pretty good, because Ive got two young boys to bring me back down to age, down to their age (laughs).DZ: Most people who play golf, do so as a form of relaxation, taking it as a chance to bond with their buddies on the weekend. If you could play a round with any 3 golfers, past or present, for a friendly Sunday round, who would you choose and why, and which course would you choose?SA: Obviously, Ill take all 3 great players: Hogan, Byron Nelson, Sam Snead. All because theyre all three different characters, different individuals. Golf course...probably would be Pebble.DZ: Why Pebble of all courses?SA: Because if the competions really bad, you got something to look at (laughs).DZ: (laughs)SA: Hey? Thats how I look at a Pro-Am, too.DZ: Thats a good outlook (laughs).SA: Yeah, "what a beautiful day isnt it" (laughs).DZ: Your documeentary, which airs on October 15th on TSN, about your journey to the PGA. What about it, without spoiling too much, would you say that Canadians will learn about you from this that they may not have known about you before.SA: I think the fact of...one the conditions of what I had to hone my skills on, and two, realizing that comoing from a carribean island, how expensive it was for my dad to actually start me off and get me out there. It was basically packing the bags and jumping in a car and not knowing where it was going. Pretty scary. And thats why I put it that way, because I didnt know what the end was, I just knew what I wanted to do, what made me happy, and that was my passion.DZ: How were the courses in Trinidad and Tobago?SA: Horrendous.DZ: Even now? SA: Even worse now.DZ: Our final question with you: Can you go BarDown?SA: When it hits the post, and then it goes down, right? With a golf ball? DZ: Sure, with a golf ball could you? (laughs)SA: Hitting a bar and then making it go down. Oooo that would be tough with a golf ball and a club. That would be really hard.DZ: That would be tougher than the spade I think.SA: Uhhh, yeah slightly. Definitely. Well if I get to use the glass, like the one from The Big Break. I think after a few shots you could get it. With the right club and the right trajectory I think you could do it.DZ: Thats another thing Id like to see you do. That and the putting with the hockey stick.SA: I mean the putting with a hockey stick is easy. I think it is. I mean like I said, its just the fact the face will be open when you hit it so its not balanced properly. DZ: I cant really golf, so I dont think I should add that extra bit of difficulty.SA: Hey, if you can hit a hockey puck, you can hit a golf ball. You can watch the TSN Documentary: Stephen Ames - From a Dot On The Map at these locations listed below:Full show Conversation part 1 Conversation part 2 Conversation part 3 DocumentaryFull showConversation part 1Conversation part 2Conversation part 3Documentary ' ' '

NEW YORK -- Marin Cilic was barred from last years U.S. Open during a doping suspension he still says was unjust. Unable to compete, he watched the tournament on TV from his home in Croatia, while using the forced time away from the tour to improve under the tutelage of new coach Goran Ivanisevic. Now, 12 months later, look at Cilic. "Seems completely unreal," he said, "to be called Grand Slam champion." The 14th-seeded Cilic won his first major final Monday, beating 10th-seeded Kei Nishikori of Japan 6-3, 6-3, 6-3 at the U.S. Open by using 17 aces and the rebuilt game and confidence instilled by Ivanisevic. "This is a second chance he got," Ivanisevic said, referring to Cilics four-month ban in 2013, "and now he can just go forward and forward." Cilic earned a $3 million winners check and will rise to No. 9 from his pre-U.S. Open ranking of No. 16, which made him the first man from outside the top 10 to win a Grand Slam title in a decade. "This," Cilic said, "is (from) all the hard work in these last several years -- and especially this last year." He prevented Nishikori from becoming the first man from Asia to win a major singles championship. "Tennis has not been our biggest sport in Japan," Nishikori said. "Hopefully I can win next time." There hadnt been a matchup between players making their Grand Slam final debuts at the U.S. Open since 1997. Lopsided and lasting less than two hours, this hardly qualified as a classic. It had been 40 years since a U.S. Open mens runner-up failed to win at least four games in any set of the final. "Both of us were pretty nervous in the first set, especially," Cilic acknowledged. Cilic won the last 10 sets he played in the tournament, including three against 17-time major champion Roger Federer in the semifinals, and three against 2010 Wimbledon runner-up Tomas Berdych in the quarterfinals. Nishikori stunned No. 1 Novak Djokovic in the semifinals, so this was the first Grand Slam final since the 2005 Australian Open without Djokovic, Federer or Rafael Nadal, who won the U.S. Open in 2013 but is sidelined now by a wrist injury. That trio had won 34 of the past 38 major titles, but this was the second of this season that eluded them. Some, including Cilic, had seen Stan Wawrinkas victory at the Australian Open in January as an indication that the next tier -- Cilic calls them "the guys from second line" -- was about to get a crack at the hardware. Cilic tested positive for a stimulant at a tournament in Germany in May 20113.ddddddddddddThe International Tennis Federation initially sought a two-year punishment; Cilic wound up with a much shorter suspension on appeal. He said he ingested the substance unintentionally via a glucose tablet bought at a pharmacy and says the process that led to his penalty "wouldnt be fair to any tennis player." But he looks on the bright side. "I just used the positive parts, which, you know, made me tougher," Cilic said. Plus, it was last September that he connected with the only other man from Croatia to win a major, 2001 Wimbledon champion Ivanisevic. "Any Croatian knows where he was at that time," said Cilic, who was 12 and at summer camp. Ivanisevic insisted the biggest change for Cilic is being more relaxed on court. "He didnt learn how to play tennis in this year," Ivanisevic said. "He always knew how to play tennis." The 6-foot-6 (1.98-meter) Cilic, who is 25, and the 5-10 (1.78-meter) Nishikori, 24, each works with a guy with a major championship: Michael Chang is one of Nishikoris two coaches. The Arthur Ashe Stadium artificial lights were on and the stands were mostly empty when the players walked out to the court at 5 p.m. -- which was 6 a.m. in Japan, but did not prevent folks there from gathering to watch on TV. There wasnt much to cheer for. Cilic won 19 of his last 20 service points in the opening set. The biggest problem for Nishikori, really, was there were not many extended groundstroke exchanges -- and when there were, he tended to lose them. He was off, whether because of the wind, the accumulated fatigue from a pair of four-hour-plus victories over No. 3 Wawrinka and No. 5 Milos Raonic, or perhaps knowing what was at stake for him, his country and his continent. Nishikori admitted feeling jitters early and getting "a little bit lazy." Cilic wound up with twice as many winners, 38-19. "I guess Kei didnt feel it today," said Dante Bottini, who helps Chang coach Nishikori. Nishikori only broke once, in the second set, and Cilic broke right back. In the third set, trailing 4-2, Nishikori had three other break points. But one was erased by an ace and on the others, Nishikori slapped second-serve returns into the net -- an escape Cilic termed "lucky." Soon enough, Cilic was kissing his shiny silver trophy. Later, he cradled that cup as he walked into his news conference, which was interrupted by his constantly ringing phone. "I feel," he said of his career-defining moment, "its going to definitely change my life." ' ' '

The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim have taken over top spot in the TSN.ca MLB Power Rankings, ahead of the Oakland Athletics and Toronto Blue Jays. Since starting the year 16-17, the Angels are 12-5 and are getting healthier. They have three starters -- Jered Weaver, C.J. Wilson and Garrett Richards -- with an ERA of 3.00 or better, which complements their productive offence. The Jays are one of the big risers this week, going from nine to three, as they are currently riding a seven-game winning streak. After a week in which they had one no-hitter and then flirted with a perfect game the next night, the Los Angeles Dodgers are up from 13 to eight. The Pittsburgh Pirates are starting to hit, and have won five of six, which is enough to jump from 27 to 17, while the Chicago White Sox moved from 23 to 16, thanks mostly to getting ace Chris Sale back from the disabled list. After reigning as the number one team for the past three weeks, the Detroit Tigers collapsed, losing seven of eight, to fall from top spot all the way down the nine. A slump knocks the Colorado Rockies from 10 to 15, and pitching woes bump the Kansas City Royals from 12 to 20. Injuries continue to plague the San Diego Padres, and they fall from 18 to 23 and the defending champion Boston Red Sox, who had lost nine straight before winning Monday, drop from 20 to 28. Pretty spectacular. While Beckham said he hopes to produce more such plays over the course of his NFL career, it seems safe to say this one will earn a permanent spot in the highlight reel.Truth is, Beckham works on his one-handed catching frequently — all the time in practice, Giants coach Tom Coughlin said.I guess, Beckham said, Ive got to thank my mom for the long fingers. In case you missed it, here are the other top topics after the NFL seasons 12th Sunday:PATRIOTS STREAK: A week after riding Jonas Grays 201-yard, four-touchdown rushing performance to their sixth consecutive victory, the Patriots stretched that streak to seven games despite benching Gray. A couple of days after being sent away from practice for showing up late, he did not play at all in New Englands 34-9 defeat of Detroit. Shrug. Coach Bill Belichick simply plugs in guys and wins, going with LeGarrette Blount, who was signed last week after getting cut by Pittsburgh. All Blount did was run for 78 yards and score a pair of TDs for the Patriots, who are 9-2 and atop the AFC heading into next Sundays showdown — expect to hear the words Super Bowl preview — at Green Bay, which is 8-3.ddddddddddddALL ABOUT THAT ACTION: So after being docked $100,000 by the league for leaving the locker room last week without speaking to reporters, Seahawks running back Marshawn Lynch did stay around after Seattle beat Arizona 19-3, but mostly stuck to one-word answers. More importantly, the reigning Super Bowl champs (7-4) stayed in the playoff race by defeating the NFC West-leading Cardinals (9-2); backup QB Drew Stanton was only 14 of 26 for 149 yards and an interception.GORDONS RETURN: Browns receiver Josh Gordon was good as ever as he returned from his 10-game suspension — originally a full-year ban — for failing a test for marijuana. Gordon led the league in receiving last season with 1,646 yards in only 14 games and he picked up right where he left off. He caught eight passes for 120 yards, including a 24-yarder on the game-winning drive, helping the Browns improve to 7-4 by edging Atlanta 26-24.QUESTIONING SMITH: Falcons coach Mike Smith opened himself up to second-guessing yet again with his late-game decision-making against the Browns. Right before his team kicked a last-minute field goal, Smith called a timeout while facing third-and-2 — saving some precious seconds for Clevelands eventual go-ahead drive — and then threw a deep incompletion — saving some more seconds for Cleveland.___Follow Howard Fendrich on Twitter at http://twitter.com/HowardFendrich___Online:AP NFL website: www.pro32.ap.org and AP NFL Twitter feed: http://twitter.com/AP_NFL ' ' '

SOCHI, Russia -- IOC President Thomas Bach accused world leaders Tuesday of using the Sochi Olympics as a political platform "on the backs of the athletes," and of snubbing the games without even being invited. Three days before the opening of Russias first Winter Games, Bach used a hard-hitting speech to call out politicians for using the Olympics to make an "ostentatious gesture" serving their own agendas. Without naming any individuals, Bachs comments appeared directed at President Barack Obama and European politicians who have taken stands against Russias law banning gay "propaganda" among minors. The Olympics, Bach said, should not be "used as a stage for political dissent or for trying to score points in internal or external political contests." "Have the courage to address your disagreements in a peaceful direct political dialogue and not on the backs of the athletes," he said at a ceremony attended by Russian President Vladimir Putin. "People have a very good understanding of what it really means to single out the Olympic Games to make an ostentatious gesture which allegedly costs nothing but produces international headlines. "In the extreme, we had to see a few politicians whose contributions to the fight for a good cause consisted of publicly declining invitations they had not even received." The buildup to the Olympics has been overshadowed by Western criticism of the anti-gay law and Russias record on human rights and other issues, making Sochi among the most politically charged games in years. Obama and key European leaders are shunning the Olympics. Obama, in a clear message against the anti-gay laws, has sent a delegation to Sochi made up of three openly gay athletes -- tennis great Billie Jean King, 2006 Olympic hockey medallist Caitlin Cahow and figure skater Brian Boitano. For the first time since 2000, the U.S. delegation to an Olympics will not include a president, vice-president or first lady. Former Homeland Security chief Janet Napolitano leads the delegation. German President Joachim GGauck and French President Francois Hollande are also not coming to Sochi.dddddddddddd Neither is British Prime Minister David Cameron. Bach reiterated again that Putin had given the IOC assurances that the Olympic Charter would be upheld during the games and that homosexuals would not be discriminated against. Bach said Olympic values stand against any form of discrimination, including on grounds of sexual orientation. But he stressed the IOC must be "politically neutral without being apolitical" and that athletes must not use the Olympic Village and venues for "political demonstrations." The IOC has come under criticism for not doing more to fight the anti-gay law, but Bach said the committee was a sports organization with limited responsibilities. "We are not a supra-national government," he said. "We are not a superior world-parliament. We do not have a mandate to impose measures on sovereign states." Bachs speech was delivered at a ceremony marking the opening of the IOCs three-day session, or general assembly, ahead of the games. The Germans sharp comments marked a strong contrast with the relatively anodyne, diplomatic speeches of his predecessor, Jacques Rogge. Bach, winner of a fencing gold medal at the 1972 Olympics, was elected in September to succeed Rogge, who served for 12 years. Bach acknowledged there had been "a lot of skepticism in and outside the IOC" when Sochi was awarded the Olympics in 2007. "Now, seven years later, we can see that Sochi, that Russia has delivered," he said. Putin lauded the IOCs decision to bring the games to the Black Sea resort. "We realize what a difficult decision this was to hold the games in a city that barely had 10 to 15 per cent of the necessary infrastructure," he said. "You believed in us, you believed in the Russian character which can overcome all difficulties." "In the space of five years," Putin added, "we built world-class sports venues and city infrastructure that normally takes decades to build." ' ' '

WASHINGTON - Washington Nationals manager Matt Williams said the last time he was part of three consecutive walk-off wins he was playing for the Arizona Diamondbacks. This time the Diamondbacks were the ones being beaten. Adam LaRoche hit a game-winning solo home run with two outs in the 11th inning to help the Nationals beat the Diamondbacks 5-4 Monday night for their seventh straight win. It was the third walk-off win in as many days for NL-East leading Washington, the first two coming against the Pirates. "They dont come around very often thats for sure," Williams said, "but (we) just keep fighting.which is a great trait to have." LaRoche sent a 3-1 pitch from Will Harris (0-3) off the wall in the back of the Nationals bullpen and was mobbed by his teammates at home plate. "I got every bit of it, I did," LaRoche said. Just a crazy few days. I dont know how weve gotten these walk off situations the last few days, but we have and have been able to grind back." It was LaRoches first career walk-off homer. "Nice to get my first one, it took me long enough," the 34-year-old said. Winning pitcher Craig Stammen (3-4) pitched out of a bases-loaded, no outs jam in the top of the inning. "We missed our opportunity, me striking out instead of putting the ball in play," said Didi Gregorius, who made the second out against Stammen. Arizona tied it 4-4 when David Peralta led off the ninth with a solo homer off Tyler Clippard. Washington trailed 3-2 when Denard Span doubled with one-out in the eighth against Brad Ziegler and Anthony Rendon followed with a triple to tie it. Jayson Werth then scored Rendon with a sacrifice fly. Miguel Montero had three hits for Arizona, and rookie Ender Inciarte extended his hitting streak to 18 games. Arizona had taken the lead in the top of the eighth. Jake Lamb drew a lead-off walk off Jordan Zimmermann, and Gregorius sent a 3-2 fastball into the Nationals bullpen for his fifth home run. Wilson Ramos had given Washington a 2-1 lead with a two-run homer off Arizona starter Vidal Nuno in the seventh. Nuno, winless in eight starts with the Diamondbacks, pitched well, allowing two runs and five hits over seven innings. Zimmermann went seven-plus innings, allowing three runs on four hits. His three walks were a season-high. He faced the minimum through four innings thanks to a pair of double plays. In the fifth however, the first two Diamondbacks reached base via a walk and a single. Manager Kirk Gibson had No. 6 hitter Jordan Pacheco bunt the runners over, and Lambs sacrifice fly made it 1-0. Nationals: RH Stephen Strasburg (9-10, 2.53) pitches Tuesday at Nationals Park, where hes 7-2 with a 2.41 ERA this season. SCARY MOMENT Washington second baseman Asdrubal Cabrera was shaken up, but remained in the game after a third-inning collision at second base. On a sacrifice bunt attempt by Jordan Zimmermann, Cabrera slid into second and the side of his head slammed against the knee of Gregoriuss, who was fielding the throw. Cabrera remained on the ground for several minutes as manager Matt Williams and the trainer came out to check on him. STREAKING DIAMONDBACKS Inciarte is tied with Jose Abreu of the White Sox for the second longest hitting streak this season by a rookie. Abreu had a 21-game streak as well. . An impressive showing in some regard, the Raptors victory was filled with the rust you would expect after a long layoff and the addition of several new players to coach Dwane Caseys roster. Rudy Gay and newcomer Tyler Hansbrough led all scorers with 17 apiece for the Raptors, who turned the ball over 26 times leading to 26 Celtics points. Toronto overcame its miscues thanks in large part to efficient offensive production and a complete defensive effort, on par with what Casey has preached throughout the early portion of training camp. The Raptors shot 52 per cent from the field, holding Boston to 40 per cent and out-rebounding them 46-26. DeMar DeRozan chipped in with 13 points while sophomores Terrence Ross and Jonas Valanciunas scored 12 and 10 respectively. The Celtics began a new era, debuting with seven new players and a new head coach following a franchise-altering offseason. Without future hall of famers Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett - who were traded to the Nets this summer - as well as the injured Rajon Rondo, coach Brad Stevens team looked a lot different than the perennial contending club Toronto is used to seeing at the TD Garden. Gerald Wallace, who was acquired in the deal with Brooklyn, paced the new-look Celtics with 16 points and second-year forward Jared Sullinger added 14 off the bench. Toronto-native Kelly Olynyk, the 13th pick in this summers draft, scored 4 points playing 19 minutes in his first NBA game. Starters picking up where they left off Although Casey will use the preseason to experiment with his rotation, he opted to start game one with the group that finished last season atop his depth chart. Made up of DeRozan, Gay, Valanciunas, Kyle Lowry and Amir Johnson, the starting unit wasted no time reestablishing themselves on Monday, taking an early 14-2 lead and holding the Celtics to 2-of-11 shooting in the opening minutes. Apart from the expected preseason rust - resulting in 16 combined turnovers on the night and at least three from each starter - that group looked every bit as promising as they did at the tail end of last season. Anchored by the always-steady Johnson and a bigger, stronger Valanciunas, they set the tone defensively and forced the young Celtics to settle for long, contested jumpers. Offensively they were efficient, shooting a combined 22-for-37 (59 per cent) from the field. Although Gay and DeRozan shot just 1-for-6 from three-point range, an area of emphasis for them this season (its worth noting, two of DeRozans three attempts came at the end of the shot clock), the wing tandem was an effective 52 per cent from the floor. DeRozan continued to show improved awareness in the post while Gay recovered from some questionable shot selection in the first quarter to hit 4-of-5 shots in the second frame. Casey has stated that he would like to see a more consistent defensive effort from Gay this season. So far so good in that regard as the Raptors forward held Jeff Green to just six points on 2-of-7 shooting. Each starter played 13-16 minutes in the first half but cceded playing time to the second unit late in the game, as expected.dddddddddddd Valanciunas plays big before fouling out In a concerted effort to establish Valanciunas in the low post, the sophomore centre was involved in each of the teams first four possessions, resulting in three quick field goals - two dunks and a nifty hook shot over Brandon Bass. That fourth possession was whistled dead after Valanciunas was called for the offensive foul, going over the back of former Raptor Kris Humphries. This was the first of six fouls for the 21-year-old, who fouled out with 3:41 left to play. Valanciunas was featured in the post throughout the evening and was impressive on both ends of the floor but continues to play out of control at times, culminating in his early exit. Casey and the coaching staff have been working with Valanciunas on his balance and his footwork to ensure he utilizes his added strength the right way. Valanciunas finished with a double-double of 10 points and 10 rebounds, shooting 5-for-7 in 27 minutes of action. Second unit, a work in progress Understandably, the second unit - consisting of many new faces - was less in sync than the more familiar starting group. Casey went 11 deep in the first 11 minutes, 12 deep on the night, experimenting with different combinations and getting a sense of where his new players fit in. With the starters on the bench, Torontos reserves coughed up leads in both the second quarter and early in the fourth as they struggled to initiate the offence and slow Boston down on the break. With back-up point guard D.J. Augustin struggling in his Raptors debut (four points, 0-for-5 shooting), the offence lacked cohesion. Newcomer Austin Daye (four points, 1-of-5) also looked lost at times. Again, getting the new players acclimated and filling out the rotation is what the exhibition season is about. Hansbrough, Ross lead reserves Hansbough did not disappoint in his Raptors debut, living up to his reputation as the teams newest work horse (or instigator, depending on your perspective). In 21 minutes off the bench, the former Pacer was all over the floor. He got to the free-throw line (knocking down seven of eight attempts), grabbed nine boards - six on the offensive glass - and even baited Sullinger into a double technical. A Casey player through and through, Hansbrough should be the first big off the bench this season and its not hard to see him logging a career high in minutes played, assuming good health. Meanwhile, in 25 minutes Ross was also a standout off Torontos bench. The sophomore guard played with the confidence, consistent effort and efficiency that was seldom seen in his rookie year. Ross was active and attentive defensively - grabbing four steals - and made an effort to put the ball on the floor and get into the lane. Ross, like Hansbrough, should be a big part of the second unit this season and could be the top offensive option for that group assuming he takes the next step in his second year. Up Next The Raptors return to Toronto where theyll continue their training camp and host the Minnesota Timberwolves for a preseason tilt at the Air Canada Centre on Wednesday. TSN Radio 1050 Toronto has the game at 7pm ET. ' ' '

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. - Top choice Odell Beckham Jr., and three other draft picks have signed with the New York Giants on Monday. That leaves only one unsigned player for the Giants from this months selections, defensive tackle Jay Bromley, taken in the third round. In addition to Beckham, a wide receiver drafted 12th overall, centre Weston Richburg (second round), linebacker Devon Kennard (fifth round) and cornerback Bennett Jackson (sixth round) signed with the team Monday. Beckham joins another LSU receiver, Rueben Randle, in New Yorks passing attack, which lost veteran Hakeem Nicks in free agency. Beckham set an LSU record with 2,315 all-purpose yards in 2013, completing his career with 15 touchdowns and 4,118 all-purpose yards, which ranks No. 5 in school history. "He has great speed. Hes polished. He has great hands and played at the top level." Giants coach Tom Coughlin said when the team drafted Beckham. "Hes someone we could count on putting the ball in the end zone and we can also feature him in the kicking game as well." Richburg was a four-year starter at Colorado State who made 50 consecutive starts, a school record. He was first-team All-Mountain West in 2013. On Friday, the Giants signed fourth-round running back Andre Williams and fifth-round safety Nat Berhe. Hyun-jin Ryu Jersey . Fellow Argentina forward Gonzalo Higuain also had a brace for Napoli. Trouble is, D.J. LeMahieu, running on the pitch, was about to score all the way from first. The relay from shortstop Chris Owings beat LeMahieu to the plate, but catcher Miguel Montero couldnt hang onto the low throw and LeMahieu slid across with the go-ahead run. Rockies manager Walt Weiss praised both LeMahieu and third base coach Stu Cole. "D.J.s got to give Stu the opportunity to wave him and thats what he did. He never slowed down and gave Stu the opportunity to make a gutsy call," Weiss said after Colorados come-from-behind 9-4 victory Saturday night. "It still seemed like we had the runner beat with the throw but we didnt hold on to it," manager Kirk Gibson lamented after the Diamondbacks fourth straight loss left them with a 1-7 record and their worst start in franchise history. "It was a pressure play they put on us. We didnt execute it." Gonzalez was as surprised as the D-Backs were when he looked back and saw LeMahieu huffing for home. "It was awesome, a heads-up play," Gonzalez said. "Parra kind of falls asleep in right field thinking that I was going to go to second base, throws the ball to second base, D.J. never stopped and that was the go-ahead run, that was what we needed. And once again, the bullpen did an amazing job tonight holding the opposing team and we just kept scoring runs." After falling behind 4-0, the Rockies scored the games final nine runs for their second straight blowout of the reeling D-Backs. Nolan Arenado homered twice for his first career multi-homer game, Michael Cuddyer went deep, rookie right-hander Tommy Kahnle picked up his first major league victory, Charlie Blackmon went 3 for 4, tying the Rockies franchise record with nine hits in consecutive games, and Colorado snapped Paul Goldschmidts 26-game hitting streak that was the longest in the majors. Yet, it was LeMahieus hustle play that truly epitomized the Rockies successful night.dddddddddddd Its the kind of aggressiveness on the base paths Weiss has been preaching about all spring that will be required of his team if the Rockies are going to have the kind of season their owner thinks they can. He predicted a 90-win season in the competitive NL West. Never looking back, LeMahieu didnt see where Gonzalez had hit the ball, "but I could kind of see by Stus body language that if something happened, if he bobbled it or whatever, that we could take an extra base there. It was a great call by him." Gonzalez praised both Cole and LeMahieu with his most improbable of RBIs. "He thanked me for my hustle and getting him that RBI," LeMahieu said with a chuckle. "It feels good as a teammate to pick up an RBI for a guy like that." That hustle also benefited Kahnle (1-0), who was selected in the 2013 Rule 5 draft from the New York Yankees. He pitched 1 2-3 innings of one-hit ball in relief of starter Jorge De La Rosa, who struggled through his second straight start. Brandon McCarthy (0-1) surrendered six earned runs on seven hits in six innings for Arizona. The Rockies fell behind 4-0 before scoring three times in the fourth and twice in the fifth to take the lead. De La Rosa allowed four runs, three of them earned, on four hits. He struggled through a 42-pitch, 21-minute first inning but only gave up one run on Martin Prados double into the left-field corner that scored Goldschmidt from first. He also gave up a two-run homer to Mark Trumbo, his fourth, in the third inning. Notes: Goldschmidt went 0-for-2 with two walks. ... Blackmons nine hits in two games tied the franchise mark set by Juan Pierre in 2002. ... Trumbo now has four home runs and 11 RBIs in five career games at Coors Field. ... De La Rosa threw 101 pitches, 30 more than McCarthy threw in six full innings. ... Colorado SS Troy Tulowitzki took a designated day off. ... The series wraps up Sunday afternoon with the D-Backs sending LHP Wade Miley (1-1) against LHP Brett Anderson (0-1). ' ' '

TORONTO -- Ask people who know Bradley Orr and the reviews of the veteran English fullback are glowing. A great teammate. An experienced professional. A player to watch and learn from. "Hes a fabulous member of any squad," said Toronto FC captain Steven Caldwell, whos known the 31-year-old Orr for more than 15 years and shares an agent. "A real character, a real winner." That character, in part, was forged the hard way. As a young man, he made mistakes that led to jail. Then the Liverpool native learned from them. If Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment is looking for someone to mentor 21-year-old Raptors centre Jonas Valanciunas, charged this week with drunk driving, it probably need look no further than its sister soccer team and Orr. He made headlines in 2006 when he was one of three Bristol City players jailed for their part in a nightclub brawl. A fourth player was given community service. Orr and a teammate were sentenced to 28 days in jail. Wales international David Partridge was given two months behind bars. The players were also suspended and fined two weeks wages by their club. "Soccer Heroes in Prison Shame" was the headline in Englands Sun tabloid. It didnt help that just days before sentencing, Orr was sent off for attempting to head-butt a teammate during a nationally televised game. Some eight years later, Orr believes his biggest mistake was just being at the Romeo Browns nightclub. "Not a lot of people actually know the story and what happened," said Orr, who doesnt shy away from his past or his missteps. A teammate -- "not necessarily a friend" -- was thrown out of the nightclub and then became involved in a brawl with bouncers, two of whom were also charged later. "Things got out of hand. It was wrong place wrong time," said Orr. "He ended up getting a beating. I tried to stop it, got caught up in it and ended up finding myself in prison at the age of 23. "Not ideal but I probably wouldnt change it, because from that, a lot of thought and reflection went on. I decided there and then its either give it everything youve got and try to make the most of this amazing opportunity that Id been given. Or Im going to find myself like many other lads around the same age, and certainly from the same city, on the scrap heap where youve got a bit of ability, youve got the talent but you havent quite got the mentality or the maturity or the discipline to succeed." Orr said he made "little adjustments," worked on his weaknesses and "really knuckled down and gave it everything." "Its eight years down the line and Im still playing football for a living. Ive got an amazing family here with me. Ive got a lot of people who mean a lot to me." Many of those stuck by him during those "dark times." "I was a young lad, I was distraught. I thought my career was finished. You think the worst at that age and I had 23 hours a day to think about it in a cell." "Im just glad I learned from a mistake, in a positive way," he added. "The outcome since then has pretty good so far. I think Ive had a decent enough career and one I can look back (at) with pride. "Even though that was an isolated incident and Im not proud of it, I certainly wouldnt change it because its probably helped make me who I am." Orr pleaded guilty based on advice that he would get some kind of community service. His father and girlfriend came to court, expecting to drive him home. Instead he was taken directly below to the cells. Orrs soccer journey featured stints with Newcastle United, Burnley, Bristol City, Queens Park Rangers, Blackburn Rovers, Ipswich Town and Blackpool before joining Toronto FC on loan in late January. He spent the bulk of his career with Bristol City, playing more than 225 games between 2004 and 2010. At 31, Orr is one of the grey beards on Toronto FCs squad. Only Dwayne De Rosario (35), Caldwell (33) and Jermain Defoe (by less than a month) are older. Orr showed his value Saturday in Columbus when injuries and suspension pressed him into service as centre back, alongside 21-year-old rookie Nick Hagglund. Toronto blanked the previously unbeaten Crew 2-0 with Orr one of three TFC players subsequently named to the MLS team of the week. The performance out of position is just why manager Ryan Nelsen acquired Orr. "For me, we needed just hardened guys who have kind of seen both sides of the tracks, if you know what I mean," Nelsen said. "Just so our young guys can learn what it takes to be a pro, to win away (games), to do the little things that it takes to be a good team. And you generally learn that from experience." Nelsen knows talent is not everything. Character plays a huge role in how far a player goes. "Our young guys have got to see that. Because its the best lesson to learn, that theyve got to do a lot of ugly stuff before they can kind of get to that top." Ask Orr about Hagglunds performance in Columbus and the veteran beams. "He was fantastic. I was delighted for Nick. His attitude towards his profession is absolutely (a) different class. He comes in every day really willing to learn and work hard. And theyre the type of lads who you want to see do well." One of the reasons Orr opted for MLS was he wanted to take himself out of his comfort zone and test himself. He has not regretted the move. Orr, who came to Canada with his wife and five-year-old twin boys, has marvelled at the passion of Torontos fans for sports. "Its really mind-blowing," said Orr. He is also blown away by Toronto FCs set-up "How can you not love this place?" he asked, pointing at the clubs well-appointed training centre. "The facilities are world-class. The citys fantastic." "So far Im loving it. Hopefully that can continue and I cant see no reason why not," he added. Orr has jumped right into Torontos sports community, taking in both Leafs and Raptors games. Hes also not afraid of getting out among the fans. A lifelong "big, big" Liverpool fan -- his 21-year-old nephew Jon Flanagan plays for the Reds -- Orr recently found out where the local supporters club was based. So he and Caldwell, with sons in tow, dropped in to see a recent Sunday game over breakfast. Fake China Jerseys . You can also listen to the game live on TSN Radio Montreal 690. The Canadiens posted a 4-3 shootout win over the NHL-leading Anaheim Ducks on Wednesday night hours after getting Vanek from the New York Islanders in exchange for prospect Sebastian Collberg. Montreal will also part with a 2014 second-round pick should it make the playoffs while also getting a fifth rounder back from New York. That seems like a safe bet with Vanek in the fold. The 30-year-old Austrian winger is set to become an unrestricted free agent in the summer, but he could help Montreal in its push to the playoffs this spring. Vanek has 21 goals and 32 assists over 60 games this season with the Islanders and Buffalo Sabres. "The most important thing is to make the playoffs and right now I have a chance to do so. This is why we play," Vanek said on Montreals website. "Anything can happen in the playoffs, especially when you have a goalie like Carey Price, who I think is one of the best in the league. Ive played with Ryan Miller and Carey is just as good." Montreals win last night has the club in second place in the Atlantic Division with 77 points, three ahead of the Toronto Maple Leafs and four up on the fourth-place Tampa Bay Lightning. While Vanek mentioned playing with Price, the Habs netminder has missed all five games since the league resumed action following a break for the Winter Olympics. Price aggravated a lower-body injury during that tournament and it is unknown when he will return to action. Peter Budaj started the first four games in Prices absence and finally got a game off last night. Dustin Tokarski made his first NHL appearance of the season and stopped 39 shots before halting four of the six skaters he faced in the shootout.dddddddddddd After Saku Koivu failed on his attempt for Anaheim in the tiebreakers sixth round, Andrei Markov fired a shot that beat Ducks goaltender Jonas Hiller five-hole to improve the Habs to 6-1-1 in their last eight games. "He played unbelievable," Markov said of Tokarskis play. "He made great saves to keep us in the game." Brendan Gallagher registered a goal and an assist, while Max Pacioretty and Brian Gionta also scored for the Canadiens, who were coming off a 2-1 setback in Los Angeles on Monday that opened a four-game road trip. The swing ends on Saturday versus San Jose. Budaj is likely to return to net tonight and is 8-3-3 lifetime versus the Coyotes with a 2.70 goals against average. Montreal will try to avoid its first loss in this series since a setback on the road on Dec. 9, 1998. The Canadiens have gone 11-0-0 with three ties in the 14 meetings since, winning five times and posting one tie in the desert over that span. The Coyotes can ill-afford to see that winless streak extended as they come in one point back of the Dallas Stars for the second wild card spot in the Western Conference. Phoenix snapped a four-game slide on Tuesday with a 1-0 win over the Vancouver Canucks. Antoine Vermettes 22nd of the season, scored in the first period provided Mike Smith with the only support he would need, as the 31-year-old netminder turned aside 23 shots, 11 in the third period, to secure his third shutout of the season and 27th of his career. "It was kind of a sloppy hockey game, but we won," Phoenix head coach Dave Tippett said. "Thats all we need right now." The Coyotes finish off a three-game homestand tonight before hitting the road for four in a row and should have Martin Erat in the lineup tonight after picking up the winger in a trade with the Washington Capitals on Tuesday. Erat notched one goal and 23 assists in 53 games with the Caps this season. Smith is 2-1-3 with a 2.22 GAA in seven career meetings with the Canadiens. ' ' '

MOSCOW - Russian Cup winner FC Rostov has been excluded from next seasons Europa League for financial problems and Spartak Moscow will take its place, the Russian Football Union says. Rostov qualified for Europe for the first time since 2000 with a surprise cup triumph. The football union blocked the club from taking its European place because it said it had breached domestic licensing rules. Nine-time Russian champion Spartak avoids missing out on European action for what would have been only the fourth time in the last 20 years. The football union said Rostov had already appealed the verdict and lost. The breach reportedly relates to unpaid wages from last year, since resolved. Seager was selected to replace injured Toronto first baseman Edwin Encarnacion on the American Leagues roster for next weeks All-Star game. Encarnacion, who has 26 home runs and 70 RBIs, was put on the 15-day disabled list Monday because of a strained right quadriceps. Encarnacion was injured in Saturdays game against Oakland. Seager said he was just walking out of Babies"RUs with his wife and son when he noticed manager Lloyd McClendon calling. "I put the diapers down and answered the phone," Seager said. "It worked out pretty good." Seager becomes the third Seattle player selected for the July 15 game at Target Field in Minneapolis. The 26-year-old Seager, a first-time All-Star, entered Monday with a .274 average, 13 homers, 59 RBIs and 21 doubles. But those numbers came after a miserable first three weeks of the season that had Seager sitting at .156 with no homers and four RBIs through the first 19 games. In the 66 games ssince, Seager is hitting .dddddddddddd304 with 57 RBIs and a .914 on base plus slugging. "The validation is just playing better and helping the team win. This stuff right here this is just ... its hard to describe," Seager said. "Its just something thats pretty cool and Im really, really happy about, obviously." McClendon wasnt worried about Seagers early struggles, knowing eventually the production would arrive. "The book says hes a good player and having talked with him and learning his personality, I knew that he was going to be OK, so I wasnt really worried about him," McClendon said. Seager will join teammates Felix Hernandez and second baseman Robinson Cano playing for the American League. Its the second time since 2004 Seattle has seen more than two players get selected for the All-Star game. Seagers brother, Corey, was also selected for Sundays All-Star Futures Game, a showcase for minor league talent. "Ive played with Felix a couple of years now and gotten to know Cano pretty good here. To go with a couple of guys that you know will be good," Seager said. ' ' '

Washington, DC (SportsNetwork.com) - Teddy Purcell scored the winner in the fourth round of the shootout as the Edmonton Oilers rallied for a 5-4 win over the Washington Capitals. Edmonton scored twice late in the third period to tie the game, and Purcell gave them the win when he buried a wrister past Braden Holtby. Purcell, Derek Roy, Nikita Nikitin and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins all scored in regulation for the Oilers, who have won their last two. Viktor Fasth stopped 20 shots. We can definitely take some positives out of this, said Edmonton head coach Todd Nelson. It was a good character win. The guys stuck with it. Alex Ovechkin scored twice for the Capitals, who have dropped three straight, Nicklas Backstrom and Jay Beagle also lit the lamp, while Holtby allowed four goals on 31 shots. We had this game in pretty good control and then we played that way, said Holtby. Its frustrating and not how we want to play, myself included. Purcell brought the Oilers within 4-3 on a snap shot from the left circle that beat Holtby over his glove with 4:11 to play, and Nugent-Hopkins tied the contest with 1:07 left and Fasth on the bench for an extra attacker on a wrister from the right circle. Ovechkin scored the first two goals of the game, with the first coming on a one-timer from the top of the left circle just 1:48 in. The second was another one-timer from near the same spot on a power play at 13:58. Roy got the Oilers on the board less than a minute later when he tapped home a rebound of a Nail Yakupov shot, but the Caps got the goal back less than three minutes after that when Beagle tipped in a shot from John Carlson. The only goal of the second period came from Edmonton in the waning seconds of the frame, as Nikitin made it a one-goal game with a quick one-timer off a faceoff win with 3.6 seconds left on a power play. Backstroms 15th of the season 6:38 into the third gave the Caps a 4-2 lead. Game Notes Washington plays at Columbus next Tuesday ... Edmonton hosts Minnesota next Tuesday ... MIAMI -- The flop is having an impact on the playoffs, and its being caught much more than it was in the regular season. Miami guard Dwyane Wade became the latest recipient of a post-season flopping fine Monday when the NBA ordered him to give up $5,000 after a review showed he over-exaggerated a foul during Game 2 of the finals that was charged to San Antonios Manu Ginobili. And theres an ironic twist -- Ginobili is often considered a master flopper, but he wasnt even warned once about it this season. "He took a swipe and he hit me," Wade said Monday, before the fine was announced. "It was a late call by the ref, but he called it." The league saw it a little differently. It was the fifth flopping violation of the playoffs, which works out to one in every 17.2 games. The NBA said 35 flops were caught in the regular season, or one in every 35.1 games. Players are not fined in the regular season until their second flop of the year; in the playoffs, every flop is a fine. "Flopping," Miami guard Shane Battier once said, "is a silent killer." Well, unless it works. Wade drew the foul against Ginobili with 4:09 left in the second quarter on Sunday night. Ginobili, who took a big swipe at the ball about 35 feet from the basket, wound up going to the bench with his third foul of the half. Wade went to the line and made the two resulting free throws, since Miami was already in the bonus. The Heat wound up winning by two points. "I saw Manu coming out of the corner of my eye to try to steal it so my only thing was to make sure that he didnt steal it," Wade said. "He swiped and he wound up hitting me and the ref called a foul. We move on." The Heat-Spurs matchup is tied 1-1, with Game 3 in Miami on Tuesday night. Some of the flops in the playyoffs have been almost circuslike acting jobs, including a pair by Indiana guard Lance Stephenson -- the official leaguewide leader in flopping this season with two violations in the regular season and two more in the post-season.dddddddddddd. Hes had to pay $20,000 for those flops, or basically about 2 per cent of his seasons salary. For Wade, whos made nearly $19 million in salary this season, the $5,000 was mere pocket change. And situations like that were pointed out last year by now-retired NBA Commissioner David Stern, who said the small fine "isnt enough. Youre not going to cause somebody to stop it for $5,000 when the average players salary is $5.5 million." Stern added then that anyone who thought the fine would stop the flop is allowing "hope to prevail over reason." So it would be no surprise if tougher flopping penalties were at least discussed when the NBAs competition committee when that group meets this summer. Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said hes not surprised that the rate goes up in the playoffs, saying Monday that it could be as simple a reason as "more people in the league office watching each possession." Besides Stephenson and Wade, the other post-season flop fines have been assessed to Indianas Roy Hibbert and the Spurs Tiago Splitter. All of those flops were cited in the conference-final round or later. Indianas season ended with a third straight playoff loss to the Heat. And not surprisingly, it wouldnt seem like the Pacers are rooting for their conference member this time of year -- a media relations official from East finalists tweeted shortly after the Wade-Ginobili play Sunday that the Heat guard deserved a flopping fine and even made what seemed like a lighthearted plea to the league: "Cmon NBA, do it for Lance." Why? Because they always meet in the final, right? Well, nearly always. Sweden somehow managed to make it into the gold medal game at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin. But in the 19 Olympic and World Championship final games since womens hockey arrived on the international stage in 1999, it has been Canada against the United States 18 times. Canada begins by facing Switzerland on Saturday at 8:00 a.m. in their first game of the tournament - watch it live on CBC TV and streaming at cbc.ca/olympics. The mere fact Canada has won the past three of four gold medals at the Olympics – losing only in Nagano in 1998 – would make them the favorites in the eyes of many. However, their victories in the last three Olympic Games really have nothing to do with this years tournament. More relevant is the fact the United States defeated Canada in the last four meetings of their seven-game pre-Olympic exhibition series. Canada is the defending Olympic champion, but the Americans have a little swagger. Dan Church knows that as well as anybody. Church resigned as coach of the Canadian womens Olympic team in December and was replaced by former Florida Panthers coach Kevin Dineen. Team USA is deep at every position. They also have scoring at every position – forward and defence – and they have a lot of speed. “Their young forwards especially are extremely quick,” Church said. “If you give them room in the neutral zone theyll always find a way to create. They are really gifted at getting the puck into the scoring area; even if its not a direct shot just getting it there so now your defenders and goaltender really have to be on top of things. They are always creating offence with their speed.” Canada will need to have a forward to force the Americans to one half of the ice surface and break off their speed and their ability to attack or counterattack. Scoring problems Even if its overall team speed doesnt match that of the United States, Canada traditionally can hold its own with any team in the world in terms of offence, and is better than most. That said, Canada has had some difficulty scoring, particularly against the United States, leading up to the Sochi Games. Rebecca Johnston, a scoring machine at Cornell for four seasons, has speed and skill and the ability to take it to the front of the net.ddddddddddddThe 25-year-old had a goal and six points in five games at the 2010 Olympics and will be expected to exceed those numbers this year. Jenn Wakefield, 24, has plenty of international experience, but is making her Olympic debut. She is another go-to forward for Canada. Of course there are also veterans Hayley Wickenheiser, Jayna Hefford and Caroline Ouellette, all of whom can dominate a game. Wickenheiser in particular can be a dangerous scorer when she is shooting the puck. Hefford is strong around the net and Ouellette remains an offensive catalyst. As for Canadas young players, Natalie Spooner is a power forward with great hands and Megan Agosta-Marciano can be a world beater when shes playing at her best. Countering for Team USA will be Kelli Stack. She is a game-breaker and every time shes on the ice she can create for herself and her teammates. Stack has great vision. “She is an offensive threat every time she touches the puck,” Church said. “You always have to worry about her. She is the offensive catalyst for the team.” Amanda Kessel, the younger sister of Toronto Maple Leafs star Phil, is also a really strong player. Like her brother, she has speed to burn and plenty of offensive upside. She was the collegiate national player of the year with the University of Minnesota in 2013. Physically, Canada has an edge over the United States, but the Americans do not fear Canadas physical game - just as Canada believes it can overcome USAs speed. In the end, it could come down to goaltending. Canada believes its three goalies, Shannon Szabados, Charline Labonte and Genevieve Lacasse, could all backstop the team to a gold in Sochi. Szabados will be the starter and is looking for her second Olympic gold medal as a starter. Early in the season it seemed like Team USA was leaning toward Jessie Vetter getting the job as the starter, but down the stretch, Molly Schaus got more action. Schaus is better technically, but Vetter is very athletic. The starter will likely be the goalie the coaching staff feels is the hotter of the two entering the tournament. The bottom line for Canada is that it can win a fourth straight gold in Sochi, but reputation at this tournament means squat. Its not about what was; its about what is. ' ' '

Chavez (48-1-1) had winning scores of 114-113, 114-113 and 117-110. The Mexican fighter consistently scored with a big overhand right, his first landing squarely while Vera (23-8) was on the ropes in the third round in the non-title fight. Chavez capped it off with a jarring straight right in the middle of the ring in the 10th. Appearing to have a safe lead, Chavez mostly circled the ring and danced in the final round.dddddddddddd Vera had a point taken away in the eighth when, while on the ropes, the Texan pulled down on Chavez from behind his head. In September, Chavez struggled while outpointing Vera in a disputed unanimous decision. Chavez failed to make weight, forfeited a six-figure portion of his purse and appeared to allow Vera to win the later rounds. Chavez appears to have revived his career and likely is in line for a title shot. It was his second fight in the past 17 months after a marijuana suspension in 2013 and a DUI in 2012. ' ' '
