LIBERIA, Costa Rica - Canada looked to have everything under control at halftime Saturday against the European champions from Germany. After giving up two goals in three minutes in the second half, however, Canada had to settle for a 2-2 draw in their opening match of the Womens Under-17 World Cup. "We had the 2-0 lead and we gave that up, but Germany are the European Champions for a reason," said head coach Bev Priestman. "I think playing this level of opposition for all three games, I think we really need to stay focused and do the things that we do well and trust our strategy." Canada frustrated the Germans over the opening 45 minutes and went into the break up 2-0 from goals by Jessie Fleming and Marie Levasseur. Fleming gave Canada the lead three minutes into the contest and Levasseur added another in the 44th. Germany roared to life with goals in the 65th and 68th minutes by Nina Ehegoetz and Kim Fellhauer. Indianapolis, IN (SportsNetwork.com) - Indiana Pacers forward Danny Granger is expected to make his season debut on Friday after missing the teams first 25 games with a left calf strain. Granger appeared in just five games last season before a lingering left knee injury required season-ending surgery. While attempting a comeback in early October, Granger pulled a calf in the same left leg. "Theres no way to simulate game intensity," Indiana head coach Frank Vogel said of Grangers return to the court. "Theres going to be an adjustment period while he gets used to that." Granger, selected 17th overall by the Pacers in 2005, has averaged 18.1 points, 5.2 rebounds and 2.0 assists over 515 games (423 starts) over eight NBA seasons, all in Indiana. The 30-year-old swingman will make his first regular-season appearance since March 3 when the 20-5 Pacers host Houston on Friday. Air Max 720 Outlet . Be prepared to duck. While Sundays game will certainly match two of the most successful men to have ever held the title - albeit briefly - of HC of the NYJ, its probably little solace to those still waiting for Gang Green to return to the seasons biggest game for the first time since the end of the Johnson administration. Of course, Pete Carrolls rise from one-year flop in New Jersey to repeat title contender in Seattle is a bit easier for the East Rutherford brethren to take, considering he was 6-10 in the 1994 season with the Jets and also flamed out after three years in Foxborough before finally hitting his pro sideline stride. I knew Pete was a good coach, former center Jim Sweeney said. It just took him 20 years to prove it. He was ahead of his time. Itd be no different than if Mark Sanchez went on to become an MVP somewhere else. He had his chance in New York. And if he channels Joe Montana in another city, bully for him. When it comes to the guy coaching the other team at University of Phoenix Stadium, though, dont expect the conversation to have quite the same level of empathy. Because while Bill Belichick is hardly a heartthrob to any fan base west of the Massachusetts state line, theres still a unique enmity for him among loyalists to the franchise from which his abrupt, hand-scribbled exit 15 years ago remains a scar. The players, front office and stadium have all changed since Belichick addressed a stunned media horde in January 2000, claiming he was uneasy about an imminent transition following the death of owner Leon Hess - the man whod reserved the head coaching spot for him upon Bill Parcells retirement. But to Jets fans then and now, it wasnt just that he left, it was how he did it. And its no longer just hard feelings; its envy over all the #$#%@$@ success hes had since. I knew we were losing something pretty special, said Victor Green, who played three years under Belichick as an assistant in New York and one under him as head man in New England. I always tell people, Belichick is the best coach at every position in the NFL. Thats how highly I think of him. And lest anyone outside of New York forget, this years recovery from pedestrian 2-2 to dominant 14-4 (including playoffs) isnt exactly the first time Belichicks shown he can make something out of nothing in New England. He was 5-11 in his first year with the Patriots after succeeding Carroll there, then recovered from a 0-2 start the next while riding an unheralded sixth- round QB to a championship. An unheralded sixth-round QB, by the way, that the New York Daily News claimed in October would have been a Jet on draft day had Parcells not overruled veteran scout Jesse Kaye to select cornerback Tony Scott, who ultimately played in all of 23 NFL games before fading to anonymity.dddddddddddd Anyway, that unheralded QB - a kid named Tom Brady - got his first extended field time the day New York linebacker Mo Lewis put Drew Bledsoe out with a sideline hit in Week 2, and, though the Jets went on to take the game behind Vinny Testaverde, its pretty safe to say the other guys have won the war. Belichick is 21-10 against New York since taking the New England job - including 21-8 with Brady - and the coach/QB duo has won the AFC East in all but two of the 14 years since Bradys ascension to full-time starter, including each and every season since 2003 in which the signal-caller has gone injury-free. Still, its not as if all of Belichicks Patriot achievements have come at the Jets expense. Hes a full 99 games over .500 - 155-56, to be exact - against the rest of the league in 15 regular seasons, has won at least 11 games no fewer than 11 times and has advanced for at least one playoff victory on 10 occasions. The first three of those 10 occasions yielded wins in Super Bowls XXXVI, XXXVIII and XXXIX, before his 16-0 and 13-3 teams were beaten by the New York Giants in XLII and XLVI. He remains the only coach to win three championships in four seasons. Not bad for a guy who, like Carroll, many dismissed as a failure after a five- year run in Cleveland during which he managed just one winning season and ended the stint with a 5-11 record in a 1995 debacle remembered mainly for owner Art Modells decision to move the franchise to Baltimore. Modell had declared two days after the midseason announcement that Bill Belichick will be my head coach in 1996, but he recanted after the team lost six of its final seven games and removed Belichick to clear space for Ted Marchibroda, who lasted three seasons and went 16-31-1. The Browns were his training camp, his boot camp for success, said Mary Kay Cabot, who covered the team for the Cleveland Plain Dealer. There were mistakes he made here on players, personnel, staff (and) public relations. But hes the master of adjustments. He learned how to do it right by everything he did wrong here. He really is brilliant. Belichick spent the next season under Parcells at New England, then followed him for three more years in New York before firing the front-office shot that permanently altered two franchises. And come Sunday, if he manages to succeed Carrolls hold on the Lombardi Trophy the way he succeeded him as coach of the Patriots, itll leave a new mark that Jets fans might feel for another 15 years. What the evidence does show, quite clearly, is that Belichick is not just a good coach but a great coach, NBCSports.com columnist Michael David Smith said. If his team wins (against Seattle), it may be time to proclaim Belichick the best coach ever. ' ' '
TORONTO – You could say that Stephane Robidas became a Texan. Having spent more than a decade of his professional life in Dallas, Texas became a bona-fide second home for the native of Sherbrooke, Quebec. It was almost like I was a Texan, Robidas says. I was part of it for so long. This is not a hockey story, but instead a story on the reverberations of a life within hockey. So often in sports – and perhaps rightfully so – we focus on player movement through the lens of the team but rarely through that of the individual. Robidass exit from Dallas, where he first landed in the fall of 2002, was painful. He played more than 700 games there with the Stars, but it was leaving the place where he and his family built a life that was particularly tough and not without a few tears. -- Drafted by his hometown Montreal Canadiens in 1995, Robidas always figured hed finish his career in Dallas, but that was not ultimately to be. He signed a three-year deal this summer to play in Toronto. Its like moving away from home, he said of leaving the Lone Star state. Its the same thing because I can honestly say Dallas was home for me. Obviously Im from Quebec, Im proud to be French Canadian and I will always go back home in the summer, but my life was in Dallas for the longest time. Hed built his family there. He was at his best as a professional there. His friends were there. And then suddenly he was gone, sporting a Ducks jersey three weeks after he was first approached about leaving. -- It was a Sunday in March earlier this year when the world first shook for the Robidas clan. Still fighting his way back from the first of two broken right leg injuries, Robidas was practicing with his Stars teammates that day in Dallas. He grabbed a bite to eat after the on-ice session and was on his way to the gym for a workout when the still newish general manager of the team, Jim Nill, approached. Nill invited Robidas into his office for a chat. Do I work out first? Robidas asked. No, Nill said, come and see me before you work out. Long the second in command to Ken Holland in Detroit, Nill started by saying how much the Stars appreciated everything that Robidas had done – he was in his 11th season with the team – adding how much they loved him in the process. Then he told Robidas that two legitimate Stanley Cup contenders – teams with more certain playoff hopes than the Stars – were interested in his services for the remainder of the year. Robidas was confused. He hadnt played since the end of November and was uncertain of when hed be back. But he understood the opportunity that was being presented, an opportunity to perhaps capture a Cup in his twilight years. He put it up front, Robidas said glowingly of Nill. He said hey, I think for you and your career, this is the best thing. Youre not going to be rushed to come back [from the injury] and you have a chance to win a Cup. It will be good for your career. The Stars – with whom hed first been traded to more than 11 years earlier – were doing him a favour, he thought. They were offering him a prime chance to chase the Cup in one of two places, neither of which Nill would divulge at that point. Robidas had his 37th birthday the following day, a Monday. His thoughts raced. He had no idea what was to come, only that it wasnt going to be in Dallas, the place hed made his home for so many years. The whole day, Im thinking Im going to get traded, but I dont know where, Robidas recalls. My head is spinning 100 miles an hour. Later that night, the Stars – minus Robidas, who would sadly never play another shift with the team – hosted the Sabres at the American Airlines Center. Theyd win the evening on a third period power play goal from Alex Chiasson and were due to fly out immediately afterward for a date in Columbus the next night. Knowing a trade was coming – though he didnt know where – Robidas decided hed better say his goodbyes. I might not be back, he told them. The next morning, he arrived at a mostly quiet rink. He was there to skate with the teams skills coach, now more than three months after he first broke his knee against Chicago. Robidas was just about to take the ice when Nill approached, once more, in the Stars dressing room. It was Anaheim, he said of the team which had emerged for his services. You okay with that? Nill asked. Robidas responded affirmatively. Nill told him not to tell anyone yet. He would call up Ducks general manager Bob Murray and make the deal – which sent a fourth round pick to Dallas. In shock, Robidas grabbed his phone and already there were a rush of texts from everywhere. They all wanted to know if it was true, if hed been traded away from the Stars one more time. Per Nills instruction, Robidas kept quiet. Instead, he dialed up his ex-wife, Marie-Eve, who proceeded to pick up their two kids, Justin and Lexie, from school. Trades, we forget, affect not only the player, but his family and in this particular case, news of the trade was devastating. Justin, you see, had been born in Texas, was raised in Texas. All he really knew was Texas. And so out came the tears when the elder Robidas pulled into his driveway and found his son playing hockey in the garage. Justin was getting rid of his Stars jersey, he told his dad. Hed erased the Stars app on his phone, too. That Friday, the Stars were due to honour their all-time leading scorer, Mike Modano. Justin was among the nine kids due to take the ice for the ceremony, but upon learning of the trade, heartbroken, he didnt want to do it. He was crushed, Robidas said, still noticeably pained by the memory. Now with his third organization in a matter of months, Robidas is doing his best to adjust. His kids have moved back to Quebec with his ex-wife, a reality thats made day-to-day life different and admittedly difficult in Toronto. As a Star, hed wake up in the morning, drive the kids to school, hit the ice for practice and then pick them up from school again afterward. Now, hes mostly alone. Thats the toughest thing for me, he said. Now I wake up every morning, Im by myself. I get off practice, I go home. Its a different lifestyle. He isnt complaining. Its a reality of the business, he knows, and not ultimately all that unique. He calls Justin and Lexie every day, FaceTimes with them often, and when theres a break in the schedule, Robidas hops a quick early morning flight to Quebec, if only to spend the day with them. Theyll see their dad when the Leafs visit the Canadiens. Theyll visit in November. Hell head back to Sherbrooke for Christmas. Its an adjustment. Im not the first guy that it happens to and Im not the last guy either, he says. Youve just got to deal with it the best you can. The kids are still adjusting to the drastic cultural shift from the big lights of Dallas, where theres lots of money, Robidas says, to the working-class norms of Sherbrooke. His son still misses Texas plenty. He chats with his hockey buddies there all the time, tells his dad he misses those friends, misses Dallas. This will be their first winter, Robidas says, their first chance to live in the snow. He worries for them, but knows the new experience will do them good. More culture, more life experience, can only be a positive. Kids, they adjust, Robidas says. Its amazing how they adjust to things. A lot of the time, we worry about them, but as long as they feel like theyre loved and you take care of them and you spend time with them and theyre not alone, theyll adjust. And he will too. Though its clear, Dallas will not be forgotten. Joe Cardona Jersey . Louis Cardinals on Sunday afternoon; a brief, poor outing that served to highlight two trends that have developed this season. Stopping in midsentence after making a flurry of moves in opening the NHLs signing period, Murray checked his phone, smiled and said: "I should take that call." He didnt. But the timing was perfect in emphasizing Murrays point. Whatever laughingstock reputation that Sabres established in being the leagues worst team last season certainly didnt reflect in how popular they were among established free agents. "It just shows you that there are quality players that want to come here," Murray said. "Ive thought that all along, but youre never sure until the clock hits 12. And there were more (interested) than what we got done." Overseeing his first free-agency frenzy since taking over in January, Murray added depth and experience to a young, patchwork roster that contributed to one of the Sabres worst seasons in franchise history. Buffalo (21-51-10) set a franchise record for losses and established a post-NHL-expansion-era low by scoring just 150 goals. In a matter of four hours, Murray changed the teams outlook by committing a combined $46.375 million in salaries to fill various leadership and offensive needs by signing four free agents, including former Montreal Canadiens captain Brian Gionta. He also acquired veteran defenceman Josh Gorges, who adjusted his no-trade clause to add Buffalo, in a deal with Montreal. And he also re-signed forward Marcus Foligno, a restricted free agent, to a two-year $3.75 million contract. "This changes the mindset is what it changes," Murray said. "I still dont consider us a contending team by any means. But now the players may think differently. And thats good." Though forward Matt Moulson, who signed a five-year, $25 million contract, was the Sabres priciest addition, Gionta was the centerpiece. At 35, Gionta is a consistent two-way forward and respected leader, whose presence is expected to resonate on a young and developing team. From nearby Rochester, Gionta signed a three-year, $12.75 million deal. Murray is already envisioning the impact Gionta can make among plaayers, including centre Sam Reinhart, who was selected with the No.dddddddddddd 2 pick in the draft last weekend. "Yesterday, he was the captain of the Montreal Canadiens, a storied franchise, a playoff team. That wasnt a token title. That was real," Murray said of Gionta. "Theres something obviously intangible that you cant measure with a yard stick, with analytics, with anything like that, and he has it in spades." Gorges, a nine-year NHL veteran, also has leadership potential and is regarded as someone capable of grooming Buffalos young crop of blue-liners. "Hes heart and soul," said Murray, who gave up a 2016 second-round pick to acquire Gorges. "He blocks shots. Hes the type of player that can wear a letter. Hes definitely part of the leadership group." Moulson, a seven-year NHL veteran and a three-time 30-goal scorer, rejoins the Sabres after a brief four-month stint in Buffalo last season. Acquired by the Sabres in a trade that sent Thomas Vanek to the New York Islanders in October, Moulson was then dealt to the Minnesota Wild at the trade deadline in March. Moulson was expendable in Buffalo because he was in the final year of his contract. And yet he enjoyed his brief time with the team to come back. The Sabres also signed defenceman Andrej Meszaros to a one-year, $4.125 million contract, and gritty forward Cody McCormick to a three-year, $4.5 million deal. McCormick is a former Sabres player, who was traded in the deal with Moulson to Minnesota. As for Meszaros, hes a nine-year NHL veteran who has had difficulty finding his niche after splitting the past six seasons between three teams, including the Philadelphia Flyers and Boston Bruins last year. Murray, who previously worked for the Senators, is familiar with Meszaros from when the defenceman was in Ottawa. Murray believes the former first-round draft pick can regain the steady form he had in Ottawa, when he combined for 26 goals and 110 points in 246 games. The additions gave Murray reason to be hopeful regarding the teams future. "We can say its a team on the rise. People have to see that, Murray said, including the Sabres youngsters. "I think our kids are sitting at home, going, Wow!" ' ' '
Christian Horner has told Sky Sports F1 that Red Bull could test their canopy concept during Practice One in Russia. The canopy is the former world champions alternative proposal to the halo device which Ferrari trialled during pre-season testing Barcelona. Both are designed to give additional protection to drivers in the event of an object, for example a tyre, hitting a driver in an accident and they could be introduced as soon as 2017. Were going to test the canopy solution over the next week - static testing, so were going to fire a wheel at in on a plinth to see how that withstands it, Horner told Sky Sports F1 in China. Then if that goes okay, we may put it on one car very briefly in Sochi. We will see how the testing goes over the next week or so. I think the canopy offers a bit more protection because it does have a windscreen. Its a more elegant solution. The former New York Post columnist and NBA TV analyst tweeted out the following statement early Tuesday morning: "Im hearing Nashs pain is forcing him 2 seriously consider calling it a career. Hed still get $ this yr & next & LAd get cap relief next." The 39-year-old Nash is sidelined indefinitely with a back injury and has been limited to just six games so far in the 2013-14 NBA season, averaging just 22.5 minutes-per-game. Still, Nashs time in Los Angeles has not been up to the lofty standards he set during his MVP years with the Phoenix Suns, as the Victoria Native appeared in just 50 games for the Lakers in 2012-13 posting a 12.7 points-per-game average (his second-lowest total since 1999-2000) and 6.7 assists per game (his lowest total over that span). Nash has three years remaining on his contract including the current NBA season, worth a total of just over $28.3 million. Winning back-to-back MVP Awards in 2004-05 and 2005-06, Nash has put together a Hall of Fame-worthy career. He is a veteran of 18 NBA seasons with the Lakers, Suns and Dallas Mavericks and has been selected to 8 NBA All-Star Games, averaging 14.3 PPG, 8.5 APG with a career free throw percentage of 90.4 per cent. ATLANTA -- David Hale made things difficult on the Reds by facing the minimum 21 batters over his last seven innings. That performance leaves Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez with a tough decision. Hale allowed only two hits over eight innings in a performance that may not be enough to save his spot in Atlantas rotation and the Braves beat the Cincinnati Reds 4-1 on Saturday night. Hale (1-0) has a 2.31 ERA in four starts but could lose his spot in the rotation next week, when left-hander Mike Minor is expected to come off the disabled list. Hale, a rookie right-hander, had good command of his sinkerball as he made it difficult for the Braves to send him back to Triple-A Gwinnett. "I mean, obviously that stuff runs through my head," Hale said of keeping his spot in the rotation. "I try not to let it get too deep in there. My goal is to be here and do the best I can and let things fall the way they will, so well see what happens." Freddie Freeman, Justin Upton and Evan Gattis each homered off Cincinnatis Mike Leake (2-2). Hale gave up a walk and two hits, including Ryan Ludwicks run-scoring double, in the first inning. He didnt allow another hit over the next seven innings. "So he threw a no-hitter after that," Ludwick said. "He did an outstanding job. What did we have? Two hits? ... Not a whole lot of offence." Reds manager Bryan Price said Hale "just never really gave us a chance. He pitched really well. It was very impressive." Cincinnatis only other baserunner against Hale came on Jay Bruces leadoff walk in the fourth, and the Braves ended that inning with a double play. Craig Kimbrel closed the combined two-hitter -- a season low for the Reds -- for his eighth save. Kimbrel gave up a one-out walk to Joey Votto in the ninth before striking out Brandon Phillips and Bruce to end the game. Freeman hit a two-run homer in the first inning. Upton and Gattis hit back-to-back homers in the third. Upton, who also hit a homer in the Braves 5-4 win on Friday night, leads the team with seven. Ludwick reached over the left-field wall to take another homer away from Freeman in the third inning. The three homers matched the most allowed in a game by Leake, who gave up four runs and eight hits in seven innings. Minor was projected as one of the teams top starters even before Kris Medlen and Brandon Beachy had season-ending elbow injuries in spring training. Minor had urinary tract surgery on Dec. 31, which pushed back his spring schedule. He then developed shoulder soreness and was shut down in spring training. Before the game, Gonzalez brushed off Minors ugly numbers in what is expected to be his final minor league rehab appearance on Friday night for Double-A Mississippi at Pensacola. Gonzalez said a "howling" wind was a major factor as Minor gave up five runs and 10 hits, including four homers. Gonzalez said hell wait until after Minors next side session to announce any rotation changes for next week. After Hales dominant performance, Gonzalez wouldnt be drawn into a discussion on how hell find a spot for Minor. "Let me enjoy the day, and well talk about it in the morning," Gonzalez said. The Reds held out third baseman Todd Frazier after he left Friday nights game with tightness in his left leg. Price said Frazier probably could have played and likely will miss only one game. Yorke is convinced Mourinho will re-invigorate Uniteds squad and says the 53-year-olds track record in management suggests can get the best out of the players inherited from his predecessor Van Gaal. You only have to look at what he has achieved over his career to see that he certainly brings a winning formula, said Yorke, who won the treble with United in 1999.I think he will certainly put United back on top where they belong. He knows he has a challenge in terms of the players he has inherited from the Van Gaal regime but I think he will certainly get the best out of the players, which I dont think Van Gaal was able to do. Yorke hopes Ryan Giggs becomes part of Mourinhos backroom team Yorke has previously stated his preference to succeed Van Gaal was former team-mate Ryan Giggs and the ex-Trinidad and Tobago international is keen to see the Welshman retained by the club in some capacity under Mourinho.Everyone knows my first choice was Giggsy and I thought he may have had the opportunity, Yorke said. Treble winner Yorke scored 63 goals in 148 Manchester United appearances Especially, when you look around in terms of other players who have come out of the game and been given the opportunity to manage such huge clubs, ie Zinedine Zidane, Pep Guardiola, Luis Enrique and Diego Simeone with what he is doing at Atletico Madrid as well. You would have thought he may get the opportunity after three years as assistant and hes also been at the football club for nearly three decades. Its not to be but I think its crucial they keep Giggsy at the club. Also See: Ferdinand welcomes Mourinho Mourinho in numbers Thierry Henrys verdict on Jose Carragher on Mourinhos impact ' ' '
ST. LOUIS - When the St. Louis Rams sent the second pick of the 2012 draft to Washington, they probably couldnt imagine owning that same slot in 2014. Thanks to Washingtons free fall last year, they do as the final payout from the Robert Griffin III trade. This is their last chance to capitalize. After draft day dealings last year, the Rams (7-9) landed explosive receiver Tavon Austin and outside linebacker Alec Ogletree, who led the team in tackles. They also have the 13th pick. Ideally, the move would again be parlaying the prime pick into more choices. That might be harder to pull off given uncertainty at the top of this draft, so they could end up addressing needs on the offensive line and taking Greg Robinson or Jake Matthews. An amazing story out of Detroit, the Sharks break out against Boston and Vancouvers depth pays off in Pittsburgh; lineup news and more in Scott Cullens Statistically Speaking. HEROES Stephen Weiss - In a highly-improbably turn of events, the Red Wings centre is becoming a major contributor. He scored a goal and added two assists in a 5-2 win over Dallas, and it gives Weiss nine points (4 G, 5 A) in seven games. He had eight points (3 G, 5 A) in 43 games over the previous two injury-marred seasons combined. Joe Pavelski - The Sharks winger scored twice and added an assist, with 11 shot attempts (9 SOG), in a 7-4 win over Boston. He also had strong possession numbers (20 shot attempts for, 6 against, 76.9%) along with linemates Joe Thornton (80.8%) and Tomas Hertl (83.3%), the trio dominating in their head-to-head matchup with Bostons Milan Lucic, Carl Soderberg and Loui Eriksson. Brad Richardson, Shawn Matthias - Richardson, the Canucks centre, picked up two goals and an assist in a 3-0 win at Pittsburgh. He has six points (3 G, 3 A) in the past four games. His left winger, Matthias, is also having a good run, and with a goal and an assist against the Penguins, now has six points (4 G, 2 A) in the past five games. Both had at least 80% possession against Pittsburgh, with Richardson leading the way (15 shot attempts for, 3 against, 83.3%), despite starting more shifts in the defensive zone. ZEROES Sidney Crosby - The Penguins superstar failed to register a shot attempt, while playing 20:24, in a 3-0 loss to Vancouver. Hes been held of the scoresheet, with only three shots on goal, in the past three games. Tyson Strachan - The Sabres blueliner was on the ice for four even-strength goals against in a 5-0 loss to Tampa Bay. (San Joses Antti Niemi wasnt necessarily better, allowing four goals on 24 shots.) Jonathan Bernier - The Maple Leafs No. 1 goaltender allowed five goals on 26 shots against New Jersey, dropping his save percentageto .912 for the season. LINEUP NEED TO KNOW Patric Hornqvist - Departed early from Pittsburghs 3-0 loss to Vancouver, with an apparent upper-body injury. Injuries are really taking hold in Pittsburgh now. If Hornqvist is going to miss time, the Penguins will have Nick Spaling, Steve Downie, Blake Comeau and Jayson Megna playing wing on their top two lines. Semyon Varlamov - Returned to the Avalanche lineup for the first time in nearly three weeks, and stopped 21 of 25 shots in a 4-3 overtime loss to Calgary. Marc Methot - The veteran defensive defenceman played 17:12 for Ottawa against the Islanders in his first game of the season. Josh Gorges - The Sabres defenceman returned to the lineup for the first time in three weeks, and played 22:42 against Tampa Bay. Griffin Reinhart - With the Islanders missing Lubomir Visnovsky, Travis Hamonic and Johnny Boychuk due to injuries, they recalled their 2012 first-round pick from Bridgeport of the AHL, where he had eight points (2 G, 6 A) and a minus-8 rating in 15 games. Reinhart played 14:09 at Ottawa, while Thomas Hickey led the Isles defence with 24:30 time on ice. Mike Sislo - With the Devils missing RW Jaromir Jagr (illness) and LW Patrik Elias (groin), Sislo was recalled from Albany, where the 26-year-old winger had 10 points (6 G, 4 A) and was plus-3 in 20 games. Brian Dumoulin - With Robert Bortuzzo suspended two games, Dumoulin saw his first action of the season for the Penguins, playing 15:08 against Vancouver. He had 10 points (2 G, 8 A) and was plus-16 in 22 AHL games before getting called up. Jussi Rynnas - Playing in his first NHL game since February of 2013, Rynnas gave up five goals on 29 shots at Detroit. Had he done so, the Atlanta Braves might still have a long winning streak, but Gattis says the teams goal now is to win the three-game series. "Yeah, man, we had a good run," Gattis said. "I hate that it ended." The Braves 14-game winning streak ended Saturday night with a 1-0 loss to the last-place Miami Marlins, who scored on reliever Jordan Waldens wild pitch in the ninth inning. Miami stopped its own six-game skid. The Braves fell one victory shy of tying the 2000 team for the franchises longest winning streak since the 1891 Boston Beaneaters won 18 straight. Hechavarria led off the Miami ninth with a triple and scored on the wild pitch by Walden (4-2). "Im more disappointed in not blocking it," Gattis said. "I didnt see the replay, but Im pretty sure I just came up on it. I think it went through me. I just came up on it a little bit with my mitt." Marlins starter Nate Eovaldi allowed one hit in seven innings. Mike Dunn (3-3) got the win and Steve Cishek earned his 24th save, striking out Paul Janish with a runner on first to end it. Both teams finished with just three hits. Hechavarrias NL-leading sixth triple bounced against the bottom of the wall in left-centre field and was the games only extra-base hit. He scored standing up -- ending the Marlins 22-inning scoreless string -- when Waldens fourth pitch to the next batter, Ed Lucas, got past Gattis. Cishek posted his 19th straight save. He got Justin Upton to line out and Freddie Freeman to ground out before Gattis singled. Janish took a called third strike. Chad Qualls recorded one out in the Atlanta eighth before Andrelton Simmons reached on an infield hit. Dunn struck out pinch-hitter Brian McCann and retired Jason Heyward on a groundout. Eovaldi allowed a first-inning single by Freeman and retired his final 14 batters. He walked three and struck out eight. "Theyre a great team," Eovaldi said. "I threw the ball really well tonight, It was just a great win all around." Braves rookie starter Alex Wood had retired 12 straight batters before Jeff Mathis singled with two outs in the fifth.ddddddddddddWood gave up two hits, struck out seven and walked one in six innings. Relievers David Carpenter and Luis Avilan combined to allow no baserunners and strike out three over the next two innings. Eovaldi received no run support for his fifth straight start. The Marlins havent scored while Eovaldi has been in a game since his 8-3 victory over Washington on July 12. He has a 1.04 ERA in his last four starts. "Hes always had a good arm to me," Heyward said after going 0 for 3. "Attacks the strike zone, has a lot of movement on his pitches, especially the fastball. Sometimes its a little bit wild and effective as far as which side of the plate." Braves third baseman Chris Johnson, who leads the NL with a .338 batting average, was ejected by plate umpire Jim Joyce to end the first after taking three pitches -- all fastballs -- for strikes with runners on first and second. Johnson yelled at Joyce and threw his bat and helmet before walking to the dugout. After a 54-minute rain delay, Janish replaced Johnson. Johnson was upset with himself for not being in the batters box with two out in the ninth. "Yeah, Im one of those guys that wants to be in the game the whole time and wants to be in that spot," he said. "So, yeah, Im definitely kicking myself a little bit." Marlins outfielder Giancarlo Stanton didnt play. Manager Mike Redmond said he gave his star the night off because "it seems like hes just really grinding and not having a whole lot of fun out there." The Marlins have the NLs worst winning percentage and theyre last in the majors in homers, RBIs and slugging percentage. PHILADELPHIA -- There is no secret to Bostons road success. The Bruins play their system and play it well no matter where they play. Patrice Bergeron scored the go-ahead goal in the second period and also tallied in the shootout to help Boston to a 4-3 victory over the Philadelphia Flyers on Sunday. The Bruins have won nine straight road games, a single-season club record. "Just being smart, playing the system and not forcing plays," Bergeron said. "Every time we take whats there, we have success." Reilly Smith, the fifth Boston shooter, clinched the victory in the shootout for the Bruins, who ended March 15-1-1. "Thats pretty impressive," Bruins coach Claude Julien said. "Theyve stayed focused, theyve stayed humble, theyve stayed determined. Im very proud of the way weve handled this month." Vincent Lecavalier scored twice for the Flyers, including the game-tying goal with 25 seconds left in regulation. Lecavaliers first goal was the 400th of his career. "Ive always wanted to have a long career, but you dont come into the league saying, I want a certain amount of goals," Lecavalier said. "You come into the league saying, I want to win the Stanley Cup. I never even thought about 400. Now that it was today I was proud of it, but as a hockey player your goal is to win a Stanley Cup." Kimmo Timonen also scored for Philadelphia, which has lost three of four to remain in third place in the Metropolitan Division. "I thought our team competed real hard," Flyers coach Craig Berube said. "They had an attitude today that they were going to show them something and I think they did. I know the outcome wasnt what we wanted, but we attacked and put a lot of pucks at the net." Andrej Meszaros and Zdeno Chara also scored, and Tuukka Rask made a career-high 49 saves for the Bruins. "They play their system to a T no matter what," Berube said. "They dont vary from it. Theyre a very competitive, heavy team." Bergeron scored to give Boston a 1-0 lead in the shootout and Claude Giroux, Philadelphias second shooter, tied it. But no other Flyers shooter scored. The Bruins last road setback came in overtime Feb. 26 at Buffalo, and they havent lost on the road in regulation since a Jan. 9 defeat at Los Angeles. Lecavalier scored his second goal with 25 seconds left. With goalie Steve Mason on the bench, Philadelphia pressed into the Boston zone. Johnny Boychuk had a chance to clear the zone, but the puck bounced over his stick on a backhand clearing attempt and went right to Jakub Voracek. Rask contested Voracek, who passed in front to a wide-open Lecavalier. It looked as if Boston had it won in regulation. Boston erased a one-goal deficit with a pair of second-period goals. Chara scored on the power play 5:44 into the period. Jarome Iginla set Chara up for the goal with a pass in front of the net, and Chara wheeled to his backhand and lifted it past Mason to the far side of the net. Bergeron continued his torrid pace with a goal in his seventh straight game, this one with 8:55 left in the period to give the Bruins a 3-2 advantage. Bergeron whirled around from the left circle and his turnaround shot slipped under Masons pads. The Flyers led 2-1 after an action-packed first period. Lecavalier opened the scoring just over five minutes into the game by beating Rask with a slap shot from the point that dipped under Rasks glove. Meszaros, who the Flyers traded to the Bruins at the trade deadline for a conditional third-round pick, tied it just over five minutes later when his wrist shot from the slot got past Mason on the stick side after Philadelphia had trouble clearing the zone. Philadelphias Zac Rinaldo raised the excitement level with a hard check on Iginla with just over four minutes left in the period and the players subsequently were penalized for fighting in a one-sided affair in favour of Rinaldo. Timonen gave Philadelphia a one-goal lead with 41.7 seconds left in the period by finishing an cross-ice, back-handed pass from Voracek. ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Two days before Anaheim visits the Los Angeles Kings for their high-profile showcase under the stars, the Ducks showed theyre willing to get just as gritty as their rivals to grind out a win. Patrick Maroon scored the tiebreaking goal on a wraparound late in the second period, and the Ducks beat the Kings 2-1 on Thursday night in the prelude to the clubs landmark outdoor game this weekend. Frederik Andersen made 30 saves and Dustin Penner scored a power-play goal in the 20th victory in 23 games for the NHL-leading Ducks, who dialed down their high-octane offensive game and matched the Kings usual grit in a hard-hitting, bad-tempered meeting. Offence was scarce when the Southern California clubs warmed up for their visit to Dodger Stadium on Saturday, and the high-scoring Ducks didnt mind at all. "We can play any style," Ducks defenceman Ben Lovejoy said. "We can play with speed teams because we have that speed and skill, and we can match up with the big, physical teams like L.A. I dont think we beat them at their own game. I think we imposed the kind of game we wanted in the second and third." After a scoreless third period, Anaheim improved to 21-1-2 at Honda Center two days after its first home regulation loss. The Ducks are rolling into the first warm-weather outdoor game in NHL history with a five-point lead over Chicago in the overall standings and a 17-point margin over third-place Los Angeles in the Pacific Division. A few minor skirmishes in the third period suggested tempers will run high in the rematch -- exactly the NHLs intention in scheduling back-to-back meetings. The Kings and Ducks will hold separate workouts Friday on the new rink in the middle of the historic baseball park. "Theres nothing we see out of them that we dont already know," Ducks captain Ryan Getzlaf said. "Theyre a good, strong team that plays physical hockey ... but we can play that, too." Anze Kopitar scored early in the first period and Jonathan Quick stopped 19 shots for the Kings, who have lost four straight. Los Angeles hasnt won since officials in Detroit blew the call on an obviously illegal tying goal by Niklas Kronwall in an eventual shootout loss to the Red Wings last Saturday. "I think everybody in this room knows we can and weve got to play better," Kopitar said. "So the pressure is a little bit bigger, for sure, but were going to get through this together. ... In the third, it was more like us -- pressing, puck possession, spending time in their zone. But we came up short. Its something we have to learn from. We cant give up soft goals and easy goals." Just 3:13 into this meeting, Kopitar ended a personal 10-game goal drought when the Ducks left him alone near the net to bang home a cross-ice pass for his 14th goal. Kopitar is the only NHL player on Slovenias first Olympic hockey team, and he leads the Kings in scoring for the seventh consecutive season. Neither team mounted much offence in the first 30 minutes, but Penner hurt his former teammates by shoving home a rebound 10 seconds into another power play late in the second period. Penner scored 11 goals in parts of three seasons with the Kings before scoring 12 goals already this season for the Ducks, who re-signed him last summer. Maroon then put the Ducks ahead, forcing a bad pass by Willie Mitchell before getting the puck down low and wrapping it around for his fourth goal -- just his second since late October. "Weve got to try to take a few positives out of tonight and come back Saturday," Kings forward Trevor Lewis said. "We obviously need the points more than they do. After a loss like this, you always want to get right back after them, so its good that weve got them again in two days." Until Winnipegs 3-2 victory on Tuesday snapped the Ducks 22-game home points streak to open the season, Los Angeles was the last visiting team to win at Honda Center, taking a shootout victory Dec. 3. The 51-year-old Toledo, the only Mexican winner in the history of the 50-and-over tour, matched Faxon at 10-under 134 at La Tempete in the first PGA Tour-sanctioned event in the area since 1956. Toledo won the then-Montreal Championship last year at La Vallee du Richelieu for his second Champions Tour victory. "I went out there on the golf course today and enjoyed myself," Toledo said. "Thats pretty much what I did. ... I hit it great. Hit a lot of fairways, hit a lot of greens, I putted well and it seems like when I putt well, I get a lot of confidence." Faxon, also a two-time senior winner, had a 67. "It was a good solid round of golf today," said Faxon, an eight-time winner on the PGA Tour.dddddddddddd "I laughed at myself because I started thinking about how my rounds are usually miss the fairway, miss the green, chip it up, make a par, and this was on the fairway, on the green, make a putt and it was a nice round. "Then when I started thinking about that, I hit a bad shot on 16 and made a bogey and then three-putted 17. But the birdie on 18 was a great birdie to make finishing in the dark, in the cold." Loren Roberts was third at 8 under after a 69. Jay Haas, Scott Simpson, Wes Short Jr. and Duffy Waldorf were 7 under. Simpson and Short shot 68, Haas had a 69, and Waldorf a 71. Two-time U.S. Open champion Lee Janzen, making his Champions Tour debut, was tied for seventh at 6 under after a 67. He turned 50 last week. First-round leader Chip Beck followed his opening 65 with a 75 to drop into a tie for 23rd at 4 under. ' ' '
PORTLAND, Ore. -- Spurs coach Gregg Popovich took pains to make sure guard Tony Parker was well rested for the playoffs. "I barely played in April," Parker said. "I was joking with Pop if I was still with the Spurs." The break has paid off. Parker scored 29 points and San Antonio took a 3-0 lead in its Western Conference semifinal series against the Portland Trail Blazers with a 118-103 victory on Saturday night. Parker has scored 29 or more points in three of his last four playoff games. He had 20 points in the first half alone in Game 3 against Portland. "Hes been the engine for us," Popovich said. "He started out really well tonight. He made shots, he involved everybody else. He was playing great D at the other end. Hes really playing a whole complete game." The Spurs led by as many as 23 points in the first half, building a big early lead just as they had in the first two games of the series in San Antonio. "I think it just happened," Parker said of the third straight game with a big jump on Portland. "We just wanted to come in and have a good start, take care of the ball and play good defence like we did at home." The teams meet again on Monday night at the Moda Center. LaMarcus Aldridge had 21 points and 12 rebounds for the Portland, which pulled within eight points in the third quarter but couldnt get any closer. The Blazers were hurt by 15 turnovers and only six points from their bench. "Theyre just persistent," Aldridge said. "They play championship basketball and thats what we have to get to." No NBA team has come back from a 3-0 deficit to win a seven-game series. In 2003, the Blazers rebounded with three wins after dropping the first three against Dallas, but ultimately lost the first-round series deciding game. San Antonio, the top seed in the West, is vying for a second straight trip to the finals: Last season the Spurs fell to the Miami Heat in seven games. The winner of the series goes on to meet the winner of the conference semifinal between Oklahoma City and the Clippers. The Thunder lead that series 2-1. San Antonio has dominated this one. On Thursday night, the Spurs built a 20-point lead and won 114-97. The Spurs routed the Blazers 116-92 in the series opener after a hard-fought seven-game series against the Dallas Mavericks. The Blazers were without reserve guard Mo Williams, who has a groin injury. Williams played just 9 minutes in Game 2, and the Spurs backups outscored Portlands 50-19. Williams has consistently brought a spark and leadership off the bench the whole season, and has capably filled in while Lillard rests. Earl Watson and Will Barton helped spell starter Damian Lillard in Game 3. The Blazers took a brief 13-12 lead midway through the first quarter on Lillards step-back jumper. It was just their second lead of the series. But Parker pestered the Blazers and his finger-roll layup put the Spurs up 25-15. Marco Belinellis falling-down jumper pushed the lead to 28-17 before the first quarter was over. Parkers back-to-back 3-pointers gave the Spurs a 58-35 late first-half lead and they went into the break ahead 60-40. Portland rallied to start the second half, pulling to 64-52 after Nicolas Batums 3-pointer. He hit another 3 to narrow it to 68-60, but the Spurs kept the Blazers from coming any closer and led 83-69 going into the fourth. Parkers layup and free throw gave San Antonio a 100-81 lead in the fourth. Portland mounted a rally to get to 103-91 on Robin Lopezs layup with 5:46 left but it was too late. "Pop, you have to give him credit. He looked at the big picture, and rested me (the last month)," Parker said. "When we started the playoffs, he told me Be ready to play 37-38 minutes a game, were going to need you to play at your best. And so far its working." Portland advanced to the second round for the first time in 14 years by defeating the Houston Rockets in six games, clinching the series with Lillards amazing 3-pointer at the buzzer at home for a 99-98 victory in the deciding game. The Spurs have a 3-2 series advantage over Portland in the playoffs, sweeping the previous meeting in the 1999 conference finals. The teams split the regular-season series 2-2. NOTES: Before Game 2 in San Antonio, Blazers forward Thomas Robinson saw a snake in the locker room at the AT&T Center. Because the snake hissed, the team at first thought it was a rattlesnake, but it later turned out it was not venomous. So before Saturday nights game, Spurs coach Gregg Popovich was asked if his team had seen any critters in the Moda Center: "We expected a Beaver but we didnt see one," he laughed. ... CONCORD, N.C. - Happy Harvick has lived up to his nickname this season, and hopes the good times with new team Stewart-Haas Racing roll on at Charlotte.Kevin Harvick heads into the Coca-Cola 600 on Sunday night coming off a win and three top-10s in the last four races. He was in position to win last weeks All-Star race until a slow final pit stop caused him to finish second at Charlotte Motor Speedway. Now he goes into the Coca-Cola 600 looking for his third win in four years at NASCARs longest race of the season. Harvick won the 600-miler in 2011 and 2013, and feels hes got another shot with his new No. 4 Chevrolet. The first minute that I was in that car, I havent quit smiling, Harvick said. Its been so refreshing and so much fun to be part of that every day.Harvick, who won 23 races in 13 seasons driving for Richard Childress Racing, said theres something different and special about his new Rodney Childers-led crew. He praised Stewart-Haas, too.The bottom line is the organization from a whole has given us every resource that we have asked for, Harvick said. You never talk about money. Its just what do you need and how do we get it for you.Harvick broke through early to dominate at Phoenix for his first win with his new team, then went through some growing pains with four finishes of 36th or worse in his next five events. Things turned around at Darlington last month when Harvick outran Hendrick Motorsports stars Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Jimmie Johnson for the victory, and he hasnt slowed down since.Harvick credits much of the success to Childers, recruited by Stewart-Haas after two years as a crew chief at Michael Waltrip Racing. Childers and Harvick have connected over their desire to win, not just on race day, but during every practice session, tire test or pit stop. They all want to win and race for championships, Harvick said, and when you put (those) kind of people together with that determination, everybody pushes everybody else.Five things to watch during Sundays race:EYES ON KURT: Fans wont be the only ones watching Kurt Buschs try at the grueling, 1,100-mile double of the Indianapolis 500 and Coca-Cola 600. Buschs colleagues in NASCAR will be following very closely. Clint Bowyer said he cant wait to get up Sunday and watch the Indy 500 to see how Busch is doing. Fans are paying attention to that and were paying attention, everybody in this room and everybody in this garage area is paying attention to it, Bowyer said. Thats a big story for us.JOHNSONS SEASON: Its been a long, dry season for defending Sprint Cup champion Jimmie Johnson, whos been winless this season through 11 races to match his longest drought, at the start of the 2003 season. But Johnson showed some signs hes ready to break back on top, collecting his first pole of the season for Sundays race. Johnson has had success at Charlotte Motor Speedway with a record-tying six previous wins including three in the Coca-Cola 600. If I win, then Im winning too much. If Im not winning, then its Why arent you winning? So I cant do it right either way. I learned a long time ago to not pay attention to the outside voices and influences and just worry about my race team, he said.SUPER DALE JR.: Dale Earnhardt Jr. will be running with Superman on his No. 88 machine as part of a multi-year sponsorship deal between Hendrick Motorsports and DC Comics. Earnhardt was asked what super power hed most like to have. Super-human strength would be the best one to have, I think. Being able to pick stuff up and throw it across the yard would be fun. You can impress your friends and show off for the ladies, he said.LONG, LONG RACE: In NASCARs longest event, it doesnt pay to take chances early on. Harvick said he keeps telling himself to stay patient because the extra 100-miles gives teams that much more time to get the car perfectly tuned for last stretch. Its also about nutrition, said Jamie McMurray: Its always about trying to get enough food in your system so that youre not hungry or feel week toward the end.MILITARY SALUTES: Few sports honour the military as well as NASCAR and expect another big show at Charlotte. Goodyear again will adorn its race tires with Salute Our Troops and will match funds up to $50,000 raised through charity auction. Tommy Baldwin Racing teams are also involved in a Salute The Troops letter writing initiative where people can send notes, cards and letters of thanks and support to military personnel. NEW YORK -- Washington Nationals catcher Wilson Ramos had surgery for a broken hamate bone in his left hand Wednesday and is expected to miss about four to six weeks. "Everything went well," Nationals manager Matt Williams said. "The nerves were not affected. Everything seems to be OK." Ramos, the teams No. 1 backstop, was placed on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to April 1. Washington recalled switch-hitting catcher Sandy Leon from Triple-A Syracuse before the second game of the season against the New York Mets. Jose Lobaton was behind the plate Wednesday night, and Williams said choosing his starter at catcher will now be "a day-to-day process." Ramos batted cleanup on opening day and felt pain in his hand on a swing. He came out of the game in the seventh inning and was sent to see a hand specialist Tuesday before having surgery Wednesday in Baltimore. It was unclear if Ramos got hurt on a particular pitch or if the injury developed over time. "We dont know whether it started out as a stress fracture or what," Williams said. "Its rough to go through something like that, but what can you do now except rehab? Hes focused on that." The 26-year-old Rammos batted .dddddddddddd272 with 16 home runs and 59 RBIs in only 287 at-bats over 78 games last season. He missed 59 games with a hamstring injury. After finishing fourth in 2011 NL Rookie of the Year voting, Ramos has had a difficult time staying healthy. He played only 25 games in 2012 because of a right knee injury that required two operations. In a much more serious matter, Ramos was kidnapped in his native Venezuela and held for 51 hours in November 2011 before government forces freed him. Fortunately, he was given a clean bill of health after the ordeal. "He worked really hard in spring. He worked really hard all winter. You know, even outside of baseball its been rough on him. So I feel for him," Williams said. "When he does play, when hes healthy, its really, really good. "Something like this you cant plan for. It happens. So all we can do is get him back as soon as we can get him back and well go from there." Williams said the Nationals considered keeping Leon on the big league roster at the end of camp. "Sandy certainly played well in spring training," Williams said. "I first and foremost love his defensive prowess. I think its important for our club." ' ' '
CHICAGO -- Max Scherzer already has a Cy Young Award. Now he has a complete game. Scherzer tossed a three-hitter in his 179th career start for his first complete game and Victor Martinez hit his 16th homer to lead the Detroit Tigers a 4-0 win over the Chicago White Sox. "Its awesome," said Scherzer, who threw 113 pitches. "I finally got the monkey off my back. "I was finally able to go nine and finish the deal, so its good feeling." Scherzer (8-2) was back in his 2013 Cy Young form, striking out eight and walking three while outdueling Chicago starter Chris Sale (5-1). Only three times did the White Sox have men in scoring position. "I was surprised when I found out that he had no complete games," Detroit manager Brad Ausmus said. "But he wanted this one for sure. He was on his game tonight. He has a Cy Young for reason." Sale was nearly as sharp as Scherzer. He struck out 10 -- all swinging -- to match a season high and allowed five hits in seven innings. "When you face Sale, youve got to bring your A" game," Scherzer said. "Theres no room for error." Martinez hit a solo shot into the left field bullpen to lead off the fifth for the only run off Sale. Miguel Cabrera drove in two runs with an infield single with two out in the eighth of reliever Jake Petricka to put the Tigers ahead 3-0. Bryan Holiday drove in an insurance run in the ninth. Sale didnt allow a baserunner until Rajai Davis led off the fourth with a single and left the game with Detroit leading 1-0. But Scherzer was a bit better. "He was dominant," Sale said of Scherzer. "You know coming into this, you know who youre going up against and its not going to be easy. "For a long time there, it was whos going to flinch first and unfortunately it was me." Scherzer had allowed 20 runs over 26 1-3 innings in his previous four starts, going 1-1. The right-hander pitched nine innings once before in a game, on Sept. 1, 2010, in 2-1 10-inning loss to Minnesota. Martinez, who entered the game second in the AL with .330 average, extended his hitting streak to seven games as the Tigers ended a three-game losing streak and won for just the third time in their last 11. By salvaging the final game of its rain-shortened series against the White Sox, first-place Detroit widened its AL Central lead to 2 1/2 games over idle Kansas City. Martinez is batting .327 against Chicago in 154 games with 24 homers and is 13 for 25 (.520) against Sale. Sale rebounded nicely from his previous start, a no-decision last Saturday in Anaheim when he took a three-hit shutout and 5-0 lead into the eighth against the Angels, but then fell apart. Scherzer walked Alejandro De Aza and Adam Eaton in the third for the games first two baserunners. But Gordon Beckham flew out deep to right to end the threat. Davis led off the fourth with the games first hit, a smashed, one-bounce single off the glove of White Sox third baseman Conor Gillaspie. But Sale picked Davis off during the next at-bat. NOTES: Sale struck out at least 10 and walked none for the third time in his career. .. Cabrera moved back to first base after a left hamstring pull restricted him to DH for two games. CF Austin Jackson entered the game with 10 hits in his last 20 at-bats -- but is just 2-for-30 lifetime against Sale and didnt start. "Its just really a good time to give him (Jackson) a day off," Tigers manager Brad Ausmus said. "You want to give guys a day off, generally speaking, against pitchers they dont do as well against." Indianapolis, IN (SportsNetwork.com) - Andrew Luck picked apart Cincinnatis secondary, while the Colts defense did the rest in shutting down the banged- up Bengals and rolling to a 26-10 playoff victory. The Colts never trailed in this AFC Wild Card mismatch and advanced to face a familiar opponent in Peyton Manning and the Denver Broncos next Sunday. The Bengals were shown another early exit, as Marvin Lewis fell to 0-6 in the postseason as Cincinnatis head coach, the last four coming with Andy Dalton under center. Dalton threw for just 155 yards on 18-of-35 passing, but was pressured all game and was without his top two targets in wide receiver A.J. Green and tight end Jermaine Gresham. Luck, on the other hand, finished with 376 yards and touchdown through the air in leading the Colts to a second straight Wild Card victory. Adam Vinatieri made all four of his field goal tries, Daniel Herron gained 141 yards from scrimmage and ran for a touchdown, and T.Y. Hilton caught six passes for 103 yards for the AFC South champions. Final Score: Dallas 24, Detroit 20 Arlington, TX (SportsNetwork.com) - Tony Romo erased his label of playoff underachiever. The Detroit Lions werent able to do the same. Romos 8-yard touchdown pass to Terrance Williams with 2:32 remaining finished off a run of 17 unanswered Dallas points, lifting the Cowboys to a 24-20 victory over the Lions in a thrilling NFC Wild Card clash. Detroit appeared on its way to its first postseason win since 1991 after taking a 20-7 lead deep into the third quarter, but Romo engineered three straight scoring drives to bring Dallas back on a night in which the Cowboys two other offensive stars were mostly held in check by a stout Lions defense. With Dez Bryant managing a modest 48 yards on three catches while double covered much of the game, Williams also stepped up to help Dallas advance to a matchup with second-seeded Green Bay in next Sundays Divisional round. The second- year wideout came through with a 76-yard touchdown late in the first half and finished with 92 yards on three grabs. DeMarco Murray added a touchdown run while grinding out 75 yards on 19 carries against Detroits top-ranked rushing defense, and the Cowboys received a boost as well from a controversial call that preceded the game-winning drive. The Lions punted the ball away with 8:10 left following Matthew Staffords incomplete pass on third down, which was initially ruled pass interference on Dallas linebacker Anthony Hitchens but then overturned by the officiating crew. Romo, who entered the matchup with a career 1-3 playoff record, shook off six sacks to throw for 293 yards and two touchdowns in a turnover-free 19-of-31 performance. Stafford finished with 323 yards, 51 of which came on a first-quarter touchdown pass to Golden Tate, and was picked off once while completing 28-of-42 attempts. China NFL Jerseys . Scott Cullen looks at Saturdays playoff action, including tough times for the undisciplined Chicago Blackhawks, Matt Calvert lifting the Blue Jackets to their first playoff win, and Nathan MacKinnon putting on a show as Colorado takes a 2-0 series lead over Minnesota. HEAVY HOCKEY The Chicago Blackhawks are within two minutes of having a 2-0 series lead, surrendering tying goals late in the third period (1:45 remaining in Game One, six seconds left in Game Two) of the first two games in St. Louis, leading to 4-3 overtime defeats in both games. Being that close doesnt amount to much now, though, as Chicago is facing a 2-0 series deficit along with the possibility that a top pair defenceman, Brent Seabrook, could be suspended for a crushing hit on Blues C David Backes, whose status has to be questionable in the immediate aftermath. Seabrook had a goal and an assist in Game Two, before taking a major penalty for his hit on Backes wit 4:51 remaining in the third period. If Seabrook is suspended, Sheldon Brookbank could move into the Chicago lineup, but Backes potential absence also causes issues for the Blues. Even though the St. Louis lineup was bolstered by the return of RW T.J. Oshie, their top three healthy centres after Backes in Game Two were Vladimir Sobotka, Maxim Lapierre and Derek Roy. If Backes is out (and Patrik Berglund is already out), then St. Louis may have to shuffle Steve Ott to the middle and add a winger, Dimitrij Jaskin or Brenden Morrow, to the lineup. Leading the way for St. Louis in Game Two was D Kevin Shattenkirk, who had a goal and two assists, and also happened to be break-even in Corsi%, which was rare on a Blues team that was easily handled by Chicago at even strength. The problem for the Blackhawks, however, was an appalling lack of discipline, as Chicago was shorthanded nine times, including 11 minutes of shorthanded time in the final 15 minutes of the game. A positive for the Blackhawks was the performance of RW Marian Hossa, who matched his season high with eight shots on goal in Game Two. Blackhawks C Jonathan Toews, who was on the ice for both the tying and game-winning goals against, had a dominant possession game (85% Corsi%), getting the better of a strength-on-strength matchup against the Blues top line of Backes, Alexander Steen and T.J. Oshie. Returning to the lineup for the first time since a late-season concussion, Oshies Corsi% for the game was 13.0%. The results through the first two games could have gone either way, so its not as if Chicago is out of the running as they head home for Game Three. However, their margin for error is gone. They need to get on the board with a win if they are going to make a series out of this. JACKETS EVEN UP Matt Calverts second goal of the game, 1:10 into double overtime, earned the Columbus Blue Jackets the first playoff win in the franchises history. Calvert, who was favourably included in my piece on which fighters can handle more playing time, played a career-high 22:26 in the double-overtime affair, having possession success with linemates Cam Atkinson and Brandon Dubinsky. Blue Jackets D Jack Johhnson led all skaters with 38:21 of ice time and scored the game-tying goal with 6:01 remaining in the third period.dddddddddddd Johnson now has 15 points in 14 career playoff games. Among defencemen with at least a dozen career playoff games, Johnsons 1.07 points per game in the postseason ranks second, behind only Bobby Orr. Blue Jackets C Ryan Johansen added a goal and an assist, while D David Savard contributed two assists to the winning effort. On the Penguins side, RW Brian Gibbons scored a pair of goals, and Sidney Crosby had a couple of assists, but no other Penguins forwards got on the scoresheet. D Paul Martin had two assists while Matt Niskanen added a goal and an assist. Perhaps the most troubling issue for Pittsburgh in Game Two was the play of D Kris Letang, who was stomped (32.5% Corsi%) in possession terms. His minus-14 Corsi was his lowest of the season. Even so, his 27:40 of ice time was behind only Paul Martin (34:07) and Brooks Orpik (28:02) on the Penguins blueline. Columbus D Fedor Tyutin left the game with a presumed upper-body injury after taking a couple of hard hits and playing just 6:55. If Tyutin is out, Dalton Prout or Nick Schultz are available to join the Columbus lineup, but Savard is the one who moves up the depth chart. He played 33:46 in Game Two. Earning the Game Two win ought to give the Blue Jackets some feeling of belonging in the postseason. They can compete with the Penguins, play them close enough that G Sergei Bobrovsky (who stopped 39 of 42 shots in Game Two) has a chance to make a difference. MACKINNONS COMING OUT PARTY 18-year-old Avalanche rookie RW Nathan MacKinnon had a goal and three assists in Colorados 4-2 Game Two win over the Minnesota Wild, giving the Avs a 2-0 lead in the series, and MacKinnon seven points through two games. There is a good chance that MacKinnon is on his way to the best playoff scoring for an 18-year-old in league history, as Jaromir Jagr holds the current mark with 13 playoff points in 1991. The line of MacKinnon, LW Gabriel Landeskog (two goals) and C Paul Stastny (one goal, three assists) carried the day for the Avalanche, with MacKinnons speed and playmaking ability creating huge difficulty for the Wild, even though Minnesota frequently had their top defence pairing of Ryan Suter and Jonas Brodin matched up against them. Though he wasnt particularly to blame for Colorados first three goals, Wild G Ilya Bryzgalov was pulled with 8:01 remaining in the second period, replaced by Darcy Kuemper, the rookie who last played March 27. Kuemper stopped all 14 shots he faced. That Colorado has high-end skill up front comes as no surprise, nor is it shocking that G Semyon Varlamov has been the better of the goaltenders in the series but, coming home for Game Three, the Wild need their own top forwards to answer the bell and hope that whomever they go with in net, Kuemper or Bryzgalov, will give them a chance to get back in the series. Sun City, South Africa (SportsNetwork.com) - Danny Willett fired a final- round, 6-under 66 on Sunday and he coasted to a 4-shot victory at the Nedbank Golf Challenge for his second career win on the European Tour. First-round leader Ross Fisher shot a 4-under 68 at Gary Player Country Club and that propelled him to a runner-up finish at 14-under 274. Donald, celebrating his 37th birthday Sunday, struggled a bit in his final round and he finished alone in third place at 12-under 276 following a 1-over 73. Drew, who spent one season in Boston, turned down a $14.1 million offer from the Red Sox last year after helping the team capture their third title in 10 years. He reportedly accepted a one-year deal that will pay him approximately $10 million. We have the ability, provided all things work out, weve added a very good player to improve this team," Boston manager John Farrell said Tuesday before the Red Sox hosted the Toronto Blue Jays. "Thats the thing (GM) Ben (Cherington) and ownership have repeatedly shown -- when a need exists, theyll do whatever is capable and whatever is available to improve the team. "Stephens return to us could very well do that. It will add stability to the leftt side of the infield.dddddddddddd" The 31-year-old will take a physical Wednesday and assuming he passes, will require minor-league stint before joining the Red Sox. Once he is ready, Drew will take over at shortstop and rookie Xander Bogaerts will be shifted to third base. Third baseman Will Middlebrooks was placed on the disabled list Saturday with a fractured right index finger. "We had a chance to sit and talk with Xander," Farrell said. "Hes aware of everything thats been talked about and reported, and just wanted to be a little bit ahead of things, as to what it might mean to his position going forward." The move comes as the Red Sox have lost four straight games, their longest skid since dropping their final eight of the 2012 season. Drew batted .253 with 13 home runs and 67 RBIs in 124 games with Boston last season. ' ' '

DURHAM, N.C. -- Theyll remember the OT from the first Syracuse-Duke game -- and the Ts that decided Round 2. The rematch of one of college basketballs best games of the season ended with Hall of Fame coach Jim Boeheim ejected after he charged onto the court to argue a block/charge call. Rodney Hood scored 13 points and drew that game-changing charging call, which helped No. 5 Duke beat No. 1 Syracuse 66-60 on Saturday night. "I just thought that was the worst call of the year, thats all," Boeheim said. "I hated to see the game decided on that call." Freshman Jabari Parker had 19 points and 10 rebounds for the Blue Devils (22-6, 11-4 Atlantic Coast Conference). Jerami Grant had 17 points and C.J. Fair, the player who was called for the charge, finished with 13 for the Orange (25-2, 12-2). The first meeting between these teams was an overtime game considered an instant classic and won by Syracuse. The rematch was just as close but it will be remembered more for Boeheims exit with about 10 seconds to play. "Both teams were worthy of winning this game, and both teams were worthy of winning up there," Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski said. "So going 1-1 was probably the way it should be." Syracuse had the ball down 60-58 when Fair drove for an apparent tying layup. But official Tony Greene whistled Fair for charging -- and Boeheim shot onto the court to argue. Greene slapped him with two technical fouls and ejected him. "People will remember this one for 30 years because the old coach went out there and got a little excited," Boeheim said. "I think the fans will remember Jim Boeheim down here. Two great games." Quinn Cook iced it by hitting three free throws with 10.4 seconds left to make it 63-58. That helped the Blue Devils bounce back from a loss to hated rival North Carolina less than 48 hours earlier. It meant they avoided their first regular-season losing streak since 2009 and it extended their winning streak at Cameron Indoor Stadium to 31 games. "Thats the way its going to be in the ACC tournament and then the NCAA," Parker said. "Weve got to play back-to-back competitive games, but I think were going to get used to it." Meanwhile, the Orange -- whose 25-0 start was spoiled three nights earlier by an overtime loss at home to sub-.500 Boston College -- are the first top-ranked team to lose twice in a week since Texas in 2010. "I dont think well probably play anymore," Boeheim said, his words laced with sarcasm. "I think well just give up." It was Dukes ninth win over a No. 1-ranked team and first since 1997. Star freshman Tyler Ennis of Brampton, Ont., finished with nine points on 2-of-13 shooting and he and fellow starting guard Trevor Cooney combined to miss all five of theiir 3-point attempts for the Orange.dddddddddddd. Three times in the final 90 seconds, they had the ball down by three or fewer points -- but all anyone will remember is that drive by Fair. He blew past Tyler Thornton along the left baseline and -- as Hood slid over to cut him off -- he flipped up a shot that banked in. Greene blew his whistle and waved it off to call Fair for charging. "Regardless of whether they called a block or a charge, I was going to be there and help Tyler out," Hood said. "I honestly didnt know (what the call would be). ... I thought I was there the whole time, but you never know." That brought an incensed Boeheim off the bench and well onto the court to argue. Once he was tossed, the game was effectively over. "I think maybe (if) we didnt get the techs, we probably still had a chance to win," Fair said. This one always seemed destined for a tight finish, even after Duke appeared to take control down the stretch. The Blue Devils scored on six consecutive possessions, keyed by Cooks 3-pointer that pushed the lead to 53-47 with just under 7 minutes left. Three trips later, Parker soared to dunk the rebound of Hoods missed 3 -- which restored the Blue Devils six-point lead and sent the Cameron Crazies into earsplitting delirium. But Ennis followed with a layup and Grant hit a jumper in transition, and things stayed tight until those technical fouls. The game again matched the two winningest mens coaches in Division I history in Hall of Famers Krzyzewski and Boeheim -- who, by the end of the night, combined for 1,924 victories. Round 1 went to Boeheim earlier this month in a game for the ages, with the Orange claiming a 91-89 victory in overtime after Dukes Rasheed Sulaimon hit a buzzer-beating, tying 3 at the end of regulation before 35,446 fans at the Carrier Dome. There were about one-quarter of that many at 9,314-seat Cameron -- but the 74-year-old building rocked all night with a ferocity usually reserved for the annual visit from North Carolina. "Another great game. Different from the first one because it seemed like both teams were scoring easy up in Syracuse, and today it was really difficult to score," Krzyzewski said. "I dont know how either team could play any harder." And from the opening tip, this one felt like a continuation of that OT thriller -- with players from both sides turning in highlight-reel plays, from Marshall Plumlees vicious dunk of a missed 3 by Sulaimon, to Ennis emphatic block of a layup by Cook. Syracuse maxed out its lead at nine on a 3-pointer by Duke transfer Michael Gbinije midway through the first half. The Blue Devils rallied to tie it at 26 at the break on Sulaimons fast-break layup with about a minute left, and it stayed tense the rest of the way. ' ' '
BOSTON -- Rajon Rondo banked in a 3-pointer that broke a fourth-quarter tie. Or so it seemed. Two minutes after the point guard apparently gave the Celtics a 93-90 lead with 4:37 remaining, officials reviewed the shot at the next stoppage in play. They ruled that Rondo released the ball after the 24-second buzzer and disallowed the basket. Boston never led again and the Indiana Pacers won 102-97 on Saturday night, their fourth straight victory. "I love instant replay!" Indiana coach Frank Vogel said with a smile. "Just a big fan, always have been, except for the couple of times it went against us." Boston coach Brad Stevens figured the basket would be taken away once officials took another look. "That doesnt change how were going to play," he said. "Were just going to try to win the next possession and build from there." Those three points were critical in a game between the team with the NBAs best record and one with the fourth-worst mark in the Eastern Conference. "It let the pressure off them," Bostons Jared Sullinger said. "They were playing frantic when the score was (93-90). Then they took away that 3. We kind of let it slip away." Paul George scored 10 of the Pacers last 12 points as they won two nights after beating another of the NBAs worst teams. On Thursday night, the Pacers won 101-96 over the Milwaukee Bucks, who have the leagues worst record. George led the Pacers with 25 points, Evan Turner came off the bench to score 17 and Lance Stephenson scored 16. Indiana won its fourth straight game and eighth in its last 11. "I missed too many easy shots (early) and I told myself when it comes back around that I have to make my shots," George said. "So I just locked in my focus and my teammates found me." Jeff Green had 27 points and Kris Humphries scored 18 as the Celtics lost for the sixth time in seven games. "We kind of got it going in the third (quarter)," Humphries said. "(It) kind of took our wind out of the sails when that 3 didnt count. (I) kind of wish theyd review it right away." Rondos shot was followed by two free throws and a reverse layup by George that put Indiana ahead 94-93. Then the reversal changed the score to 94-90 with 2:38 remaining. Sullingers two free throws made it 94-92 before Georges layup restored the Pacers four-point lead. Boston cut that to 96-94 on two free throws by Brandon Bass with 1:31 remaining, but George followed with a 3-pointer, making it 99-94. Indiana increased the lead to 102-94 on two free throws by Stephenson and one by George before Green finished the scoring with a three-point play. The Celtics scored nine of the last 11 points of the third quarter and took a 78-76 lead at the buzzer when Humphries dunked after rebounding a missed shot by Sullinger. Trailing 74-69, Humphries began the comeback with a 3-pointer on a layup and a free throw. Green and Humphries made jumpers, giving Boston a 76-74 lead with 3:28 left in the period. David West then tied the game with a foul-line jumper before Humphries quarter-ending dunk. Indiana used an eight-point run to take a 51-41 lead with three minutes left in the second quarter. Luis Scola started the surge with a 13-footer, Turner followed with two jumpers and Roy Hibbert hit two free throws. "Evan Turner gave us a big lift throughout the whole game," Vogel said, "but, in particular, down the stretch." The Pacers led 55-45 before Chris Johnsons 3-pointer cut the lead to 55-48 at halftime. The Celtics had a chance to draw closer, but Hibbert blocked Rondos shot with 29 seconds remaining. SPIELBERG, Austria -- Felipe Massa felt like he was kick-starting his Formula One career after earning his first pole position since 2008 as Williams stunned Mercedes in Austrian Grand Prix qualifying on Saturday. Massa and Williams teammate Valtteri Bottas posted the two fastest times, setting up the first race of the season without Mercedes in the front row. Championship leader Nico Rosberg was third, while Mercedes teammate Lewis Hamilton went off track in the final qualifying round and will start ninth. "After a long time that I couldnt be in this place, I hope this is the beginning of some great possibilities again," Massa said, adding he was "very emotional." Its Massa 16th career pole but first since the Brazilian GP six years ago. Williams had not had a 1-2 in qualifying since the German GP in 2003. "It was such a great moment," said the Brazilian, who has won 11 races in his career. "It was a very long time when I had my last pole position." Massas fastest lap on the 4.3-kilometre Red Bull Ring was 1 minute, 8.759 seconds, 0.087 ahead of Bottas. Rosberg came another 0.098 back. Hamilton had one time scratched as all four of his wheels crossed the sideline in turn eight, while he came off track again and spun at his final attempt to beat Massa. Bottas led the final practice earlier Saturday, edging Hamilton by 0.05, while Massa came third to send out a warning to Mercedes, which had the pole in all seven previous races. "I am not totally suprised," Williams deputy team boss Claire Williams said. "This track suits us with the long straights." According to Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff, Williams deserved the pole despite his team clearly dominating practice on Friday. "Williams has been faster on the long straights," Wolff said. "Its good for the sport, though we are a bit upset." Red Bulls Daniel Ricciardo, who ended Mercedes six-race winning streak in Montreal two weeks ago, was fifth but teammate and four-time champion Sebastian Vettel will start 12th. Its the sixth time in eight races where Ricciardo beat his German teammate in qualifying. Vettel failed to reach the final qualifying round for a third time this season as Red Bull kept struggling with the tire temperature management. Vettel had the 13th time but gained one spot as 11th-place Force India driver Perez loses five places as a penalty following his crash with Massa in Montreal. "Its simple, we are just not fast enough," Vettel said. "You saw we had problems Friday and we expected to do better today. Its definitely not what you wish for ... Sometimes you go a step forward and sometimes you go one back." Jenson Button also missed the last qualifying round and will start just ahead of Vettel. Button, the 2009 champion, had to quit the session after just four laps because of a problem with the rear brakes of his McLaren. Authentic NHL Jerseys . The Kings and Darren Collison agreed to a three-year contract worth about $16 million Thursday, a person familiar with the deal said. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because teams cant officially sign free agents until the NBAs moratorium on moves is lifted July 10. The Los Angeles Times first reported the agreement. Collison opted out of the final year of his contract with the Clippers that would have paid him $1.9 million next season. He averaged 11.4 points and 3.7 assists in 25.9 minutes last season, primarily as Chris Pauls backup. Collison has been a starter at times throughout his career since New Orleans drafted him 21st overall in 2009 out of UCLA, including 35 games last season while Paul was injured. He also played two seasons with Indiana and one in Dallas before helping the Clippers reach the second round of the playoffs. Clippers coach and president of basketball operations Doc Rivers had called Collison the teams No. 1 priority in free agency. Instead, Collison left for a big pay raise in Californias capital city and possibly even a chance to start. The market for ball-handling guards also has been a booming one this summer. Shaun Livingston left the Brooklyn Nets for a three-year, $16 million deal with Golden State. Kyle Lowry has a contract in place to return to Toronto reportedly worth $48 million over four years, and Kyrie Irving agreed to a five-year, $90 million contract extension with Cleveland. Because Thomas is a restricted free agent, the Kings can match any offer he receives. Whether they will -- or can afford to do so -- remains unclear. The Kings also are counting on some of their young guards to blossom. Last years second-round pick, point guard Ray McCallum, showed signs of improving when he played bigger minutes in the final weeks of the season. And Sacramento has drafted a shooting guard with its last two first-round picks, Ben McLemore (seventh overall) out of Kansas last year and Michigans Nik Stauskas (eighth overall) this June. Owner Vivek Ranadive, general manager Pete DAlessandro and coach Michael Malone have made as many moves as any team in the league since taking over the Kings last year, so its also possible Sacramento could shuffle its roster with more trades again this summer. The Toronto Maple Leafs broke down that defence and pulled out an impressive road victory despite nearly running out of goalies along the way. Mason Raymond broke a tie with a short-handed goal early in the third period and the Maple Leafs snapped the Kings eight-game winning streak with a 3-2 victory Thursday night. James Reimer made 31 saves in the final two periods after replacing the injured Jonathan Bernier for the Leafs, who have won four of five. Captain Dion Phaneuf and Carl Gunnarsson also scored as Toronto beat both Southern California NHL clubs in a four-day span, albeit with a blowout loss at the Shark Tank sandwiched in between. "We need every point that we can possibly get," Toronto coach Randy Carlyle said. "Were in desperation mode as every team is, and we just found a way to gut it out. We gave up a two-goal lead, and we found a way to get a big goal." After the Leafs erased that early 2-0 deficit, Raymond put them ahead with 14:54 to play. Kopitar was stopped by Reimer on a golden scoring chance, and Raymond alertly countered on a 2-on-1 rush with James van Riemsdyk for Raymonds 19th goal. Bernier gave up two goals in the first period of his first game back in Los Angeles against the team that traded him last summer, but then sat out the final two periods with a lower-body injury. Reimer filled in admirably, making a number of stunning saves. "I wouldnt blow it up too big," Reimer said. "I just came in and did my job. Every time you go in is an opportunity." Reimer, who gave up six goals in San Jose, also got up quite slowly in the second period after getting an accidental blow to the head from Jarret Stoll when the goalie dived to stop a puck. Reimer eventually shook it off, but said he "got (his) bell rung." "I was sitting beside Bernier when that happened," said Nazem Kadri, who had two assists. "I told him to take off his pads. I might have to throw them on." Marian Gaborik had an early goal and an assist in his home debut with the Kings, who fell just short of matching the longest winning streeak in franchise history.dddddddddddd Anze Kopitar had a power-play goal and Jonathan Quick stopped 26 shots in his first loss since Feb. 3. After losing nine of 10 in a skid stretching into early February, the Kings won their final game before the Olympic break and hadnt lost since. This loss prevented the Kings from equaling their record nine-game streak in 2010. "Its a stinger every time you lose after a pretty strong road trip," Kopitar said. "We didnt want to start off a homestand with a loss. I dont know how they execute their system, but it seemed like they were skating and playing a tight-checking game. But it was just a case of our game tonight not getting it done." Gaborik still came through in the Slovak goal-scorers fourth game with the club, providing exactly the boost they sought for their sagging offence. Wearing their Forum-blue-and-gold throwback jerseys, the Kings went ahead just 1:57 in when the rebound of Drew Doughtys low shot went straight to Gaborik, who scored his seventh goal of the season. "I think its coming along," Gaborik said of his line with Kopitar and Justin Williams. "We had some chemistry with our line and created some chances, so I think its going the right way." Kopitar then scored a power-play goal on a beautiful cross-ice pass from Doughty, the gold medal-winning Canadian defenceman. Gunnarsson tied it up early in the second with just his second goal in 67 games this season. Bernier was the 11th overall pick in the 2006 draft by Kings general manager Dean Lombardi. He played 62 games for Los Angeles over five NHL seasons, but never managed to beat out Quick, a lower-round pick by a previous regime who eventually became the Kings Conn Smythe Trophy winner. Lombardi traded Bernier to Toronto in a deal for Ben Scrivens -- since traded to Edmonton -- and Matt Frattin, who was sent to Columbus in the deal for Gaborik. TORONTO -- Relief came in the form of James Reimer lifting his arms after making a shootout save on Antonie Vermette. By beating the Phoenix Coyotes 2-1 in a shootout at Air Canada Centre on Thursday night, the Toronto Maple Leafs shook off the gloom and doom of recent struggles. "It hasnt been a good feeling around here the past couple days," said winger Joffrey Lupul, who scored the shootout winner. "Its funny how even with an ugly, grind-it-out win like that, you come to the rink tomorrow feeling a lot better about yourselves." The Leafs (18-16-3) can feel better about themselves beyond shootout goals by Lupul and James van Riemsdyk and a couple of stops in that competition from Reimer, who made 34 saves in regulation and overtime. Instead, this was a victory to savour for stronger play in regulation and the elimination of the kind of mistakes that led to 10 losses in their previous 13 games. "I thought individually guys really limited our turnovers and the chances we gave up for them to try and get opportunities," said centre Peter Holland, who assisted on Troy Bodies first-period goal. "It just goes to show that when we do execute what we plan on doing, things will fall into place for us." Maybe it was about time. Coach Randy Carlyle spent eight-plus hours at the rink Wednesday with the coaching staff on a day off for players devising what he hoped was a plan to turn the Leafs fortunes around. Presented at the morning skate was a blue print that included a harder forecheck and more aggressive defensive zone play. For the most part, the Leafs followed that against Phoenix (18-10-6). A strong forecheck was evident on Bodies first goal of the season and first in a Leafs uniform, thanks to work from Holland and Jerry DAmigo. The puck got out to defenceman Cody Franson at the point, and Bodie was in a perfect spot to put the rebound in on Canadian Olympic candidate Mike Smith. "(Forechecking is) something weve been stressing," Bodie said. "I think we did a good job of it on the goal. We got a good dump and we had two guys in on it right away and then the third guy joined. We were able to come out with it." Tighter defence than Toronto displayed in a loss two days earlier to the Florida Panthers helped the lead stand up until Martin Hanzal scored 15:08 into the third. Reimer, who started only because Carlyle said Jonathan Bernier was dealing with an unspecified "ailment," was satisfied with how his teammates contained the Coyotes and rebounded from a frustrating loss to Florida. "We all make mistakes," Reimer said. "We sometimes dont show up in a way we want to. I think youre judged on how you respond. I thought we did a great job tonight. We really came collectively and everyone bought in." Reimer turned aside attempts from Radim Vrbata and then Vermette in the shootout, but it was Smiths almost-save on van Riemsdyk in the first round that caused a lengthy review. Referee Paul Devorski assured Coyotes coach Dave Tippett that "110 per cent" it was in the net, and video review found it inconclusive so the goal stood. "Youve got to take him for his word," Tippett said. Devorski never signalled that it was a goal on the ice, which caused Smith some confusion. "He came and whispered it in my ear like its a goal, and he didnt really give a signal that it was," Smith said. "He made the call, he said he saw it go in. Its unfortunate, but thats the way it goes." Like the Leafs, the Coyotes were satisfied with an improved performance, despite this being their third straight loss. "We definitely took some good things out of that game," said Smith, who made 26 saves. "Its not all bad. We did a lot of good things well in the third period there to give ourselves a chance to get a point. As long as were in games, were giving ourselves a chance to win hockey games, I think well be pleased with it." Toronto didnt play perfectly, but players were nonetheless pleased with not only the result but the five-on-five play throughout regulation. "I thought we were pretty strong for pretty much the full 60 and we did things the right way, so that was definitely an improvement," van Riemsdyk said. "We stayed patient, kept it simple and guys did their job, guys battled hard. It was a good two points." Reimer was critical of his teammates after the loss to the Panthers, saying that some or all of the Leafs players dont show up for the entire game. Given how long he paused before delivering that answer Tuesday night, it was well thought-out. "Obviously I was frustrated, but I try and always answer (with) the way Im feeling -- in an honest way," Reimer said Thursday night. "Whether Im frustrated or whether Im happy, I try and answer objectively. I just answered how I thought I saw it." Relief was all over Reimers face after beating the Coyotes, and his words backed that up. "Really proud of the way the guys worked," he said. "They put in an honest effort. It was just a good game all around. I thought we played solid for 60 minutes." NOTES -- Gilbert Brule was in the lineup for the Coyotes, his first NHL appearance since May 15, 2012.
