In celebration of the clubs 40th anniversary, Vancouver Whitecaps FC have launched a new Ring of Honour to acknowledge exemplary players and figures who have embodied "Our all. Our honour." and who represent the clubs three core values: Unity, Winning, and Honour. Based on input from a selection of alumni, the first four inductees will be Bob Lenarduzzi, Carl Valentine, Domenic Mobilio, and Andrea Neil. "When we decided to launch our Ring of Honour, we were looking for people who have left a lasting legacy," said Rachel Lewis, Whitecaps FC chief operating officer. "Bobby, Carl, Domenic, and Andrea represent exactly what this club has always stood for and each of them have made remarkable contributions to our club and community. Theyre exceptionally deserving of being the first four inductees." Lenarduzzi will be the first to be inducted during the next home match on Saturday, May 3, as he joins the rest of his teammates from the inaugural 1974 Whitecaps team. This match will celebrate the first game in Whitecaps history, played on May 5, 1974, against San Jose Earthquakes – nearly 40 years to the day. "Im humbled to be inducted into the Ring of Honour," said Lenarduzzi. "There have been amazing soccer moments in this city over the years and Im very grateful to have been a part of many of those. Throughout it all Ive had incredible teammates, so it will be fantastic to have several of them with me on May 3." Neil will be inducted on August 10 at BC Place, 10 years after she captained Whitecaps FC to their first United Soccer Leagues W-League championship on August 8, 2004. Two years later, Neil was again captain as the Caps won a second W-League championship on August 6, 2006, at Swangard Stadium. Valentine will be honoured at the September 10 match. On September 9, 1979, a 21-year old Valentine joined his teammates in front of 100,000 people at the championship parade in downtown Vancouver to celebrate the clubs Soccer Bowl triumph. Finally, on October 4, members of the Mobilio family will be at BC Place for the induction of the late striker. After setting a league scoring record and winning league MVP, Mobilio led Vancouver 86ers to their fourth consecutive Canadian Soccer League title on October 6, 1991. Who should be inducted next into the Ring of Honour? Four nominees have been put forth based on voting received from alumni thus far, with a write-in option also available. Fan voting for the next inductee begins today and will run until the end of May at whitecapsfc.com/since1974. Ring of Honour Inductees Bob Lenarduzzi A product of Grandview Legion minor soccer and member of the Canadian Soccer Hall of Fame, Bob Lenarduzzi has been a part of the Whitecaps since the inaugural season in 1974. Valentine would stay in Vancouver until the NASL folded following the 1984 season and would go on to join West Bromwich Albion back in England. The winger represented Canada in the 1986 FIFA World Cup and in 1987 he returned to Vancouver to become a key member of the 86ers team that went on to win a remarkable four straight CSL championships from 1988 to 1991. Domenic Mobilio The all-time leading scorer in Canadian Soccer League history and the most prolific goalscorer in club history, Domenic Mobilio sits alone atop the charts with 170 career goals – nearly 100 more than any other player. Andrea Neil The first female soccer player ever inducted into Canadas Sports Hall of Fame, Andrea Neil had an 18-year career with the Canadian womens national team program, and six years with Whitecaps FC women. From 2001 to 2006, Neil played for the Caps (originally known as the Breakers). EL SEGUNDO, Calif. - Defenceman Robyn Regehr was placed on injured reserve by the Los Angeles Kings on Friday with an upper-body injury. The defending Stanley Cup champions recalled Jeff Schultz from the AHL after the latest significant setback for the Kings defensive corps.Regehr was hurt during the second period of Los Angeles 6-4 comeback victory over St. Louis on Thursday. He is likely to be out at least two weeks with the unspecified injury. The Kings patchwork lineup is a significant factor in their intermittent defensive struggles this season after Jonathan Quick won the Jennings Trophy last year representing the NHLs best defensive team. Schultz would be the ninth defenceman to play for Los Angeles this season.Los Angeles is still sixth in the NHL with just 2.36 goals allowed per game, but has given up 21 regulation goals in its last five games.Regehr, Alec Martinez and Jake Muzzin have already missed significant stretches of the season with injuries, while Slava Voynov will miss his 28th straight game Saturday against Arizona while under suspension after his arrest on a felony domestic violence charge. The Russian Olympians indefinite suspension will be one of the longest in NHL history. The Kings also allowed Willie Mitchell to leave for Florida as a free agent in the off-season, and replacements Brayden McNabb and Jamie McBain are still adapting to the NHL game.Star defenceman Drew Doughty is averaging 29:07 in playing time per game, trailing only Minnesotas Ryan Suter as the NHLs busiest player.Schultz got his name on the Stanley Cup last season even though he has yet to play in a regular-season game for Los Angeles. After spending the 2013-14 regular season in the AHL, Schultz played in seven post-season games during the Kings second championship run when Mitchell and Regehr were out with injuries.Schultz scored 75 points in 399 games with the Washington Capitals before signing with the Kings. KANSAS CITY, Mo. - By the time the Kansas City Chiefs pushed the pause button and looked at the scoreboard on Thursday night, they were already trailing the previously winless Oakland Raiders. Not just trailing, either. They were in a 17-3 hole midway through the third quarter. They rallied down the stretch, even taking a brief lead in the fourth quarter. But a defensive collapse and their offences inability to go the length of the field in the closing minutes led to a humiliating 24-20 defeat, one that knocked Kansas City from first place in the AFC West.We wanted to start off fast and we didnt play like that in the first half, Chiefs linebacker Josh Mauga recalled, and it kind of hurt us.That may be an understatement. We didnt really start the way we wanted to, Chiefs quarterback Alex Smith admitted. You know, on the road, we gave them too much momentum, it felt like. When asked to explain the Chiefs slow start, running back Jamaal Charles was stumped.I dont know, you know? Some games are just like that, he said. You learn from those games. Hopefully well learn from it and move on and come back next week against Denver.Yes, the Chiefs get their bitter division rival at Arrowhead Stadium on Sunday night, and with them a prime opportunity to move back into a tie atop the AFC West. But unless they are able to solve a troubling trend of slow starts, Peyton Manning and the Broncos could bury them early. The Chiefs are 5-0 when leading at halftime. Theyre 2-4 in all other games. We come back home and then weve got another big division game, and we are about to handle this the right way, Smith said. We can regroup and get it together.Just how do you get it together, though? How do you fix slow starts? After all, its not a tangible problem, something that can be fixed with playcalling alone. It doesnt come down to personnel groups, necessarily, or the scheme for the week.Often, it involves all of those things and more.In their opener against Tennessee, the Chiefs trailed 10-3 at halftime. They were behind 23-3 by the fourth quarter, when they finally found traction. The result was still a 26-10 loss, one that is even more frustrating now that Kansas City has clawed back into playoff contention.A few weeks ago in Buffalo, the problem popped up again.Kansas City trailed 10-3 at halftime and 13-3 after three quarters, finally coming alive when the game was coming down the stretch. The Chiefs scored two fourth-quarter touchdowns, their defence shut the Bills out and the result was a confidence-building 17-13 victory. The result was better. The way the Chiefs got there was a bit disappointing.Andy Reid has experience just about everything over the course of his coaching career, and even the Chiefs boss has yet to put his finger on the solution to the slow starts.Well, Ive got to make sure that I dial up plays that will help us with that. If you have an opportunity then weve got to execute when given the opportunity, he said. It hits all of us and defensively the same thing. There are things you can do as a coach with play calls and then the guys have to execute; were all in it together that way.Reid shouldered much of the blame for the flop in Oakland, and admitted that we werent as well co-ordinated as we needed to be. But he also said the Chiefs failed to grasp the opportunities that were presented, and that responsibility falls on the players.Youve got to stay on and execute. Thats one area on both sides of the ball we can do better at it. We didnt do a great job there, Reid said. I didnt feel it was a letdown; the guys didnt work hard and all that. It was one of those deals. One of those deals the Chiefs are trying hard to resolve by Sunday night.___AP NFL websites: www.pro32.ap.org and www.twitter.com/AP_NFLAir Max 270 Homme Pas Cher Acheter . (SportsNetwork.com) - The Toronto Blue Jays will try to bounce back from a series loss on Monday evening as they play host to the struggling Boston Red Sox in the first of three straight meetings. The Blue Jays began their nine-game residency by losing two of three to the Tampa Bay Rays, losing Sundays rubber match 2-1 in 10 innings. That defeat leaves Toronto 5 1/2 games back of the second wild card spot in the American League. J.A. Happ starts tonight for the Blue Jays hoping to end a three-start losing streak. He lasted only 3 1/3 innings on Tuesday at Milwaukee, charged with four runs on six hits and two walks. "We got outplayed and it started with me," said the left-hander, who is now 8-8 with a 4.39 earned run average on the season. Happ has gone 3-2 with a 4.36 ERA over his career against Boston and picked up his most recent victory against the club on July 22. The 31-year-old logged six scoreless innings, working around seven hits. Happ is set to go against a Boston club that has lost eight in a row and finished up a 2-9 homestand with an 8-6 loss to Seattle on Sunday. "The thing that we continue to stress is the unanswered runs," said Red Sox manager John Farrell. "When we score, the ability to then put up a zero is key. For us to snap out of where we are, its going to come from more consistency on the mound." It was a tough series at the plate for the Red Sox, who placed shortstop Xander Bogaerts on the seven-day concussion disabled list after Sundays game. Bogaerts was hit in the head by a changeup from Mariners starter Felix Hernandez on Friday. David Ortiz, meanwhile, was hit by a pitch on Saturday, but was in the lineup the following day before fouling a ball off his right foot. He left after the sixth inning and is day-to-day. Boston kicks off a 10-game road trip tonight with Clay Buchholz on the hill. Buchholz has not won since July 18, going 0-3 with a 7.05 ERA in six starts since. He is coming off Wednesdays setback to the Los Angeles Angels as he yielded six runs over six innings. "I felt good for just about every pitch," said Buchholz. "I just missed location with a couple of pitches and they were able to put a big inning together." The 30-year-old righty is 5-8 with a 5.94 ERA on the year and his current winless streak includes back-to-back losses to Toronto on July 23 and 28. Buchholz allowed a total of 11 earned runs, 13 hits and eight walks over 11 innings as he is now 10-8 lifetime versus the Blue Jays with a 3.22 ERA. The Blue Jays are 10-3 versus the Red Sox this year, winning each of the past six meetings. Retired players Dave Christian, Reed Larson and William Bennett filed a class action lawsuit in federal court on Tuesday alleging that the league has promoted fighting and downplayed the risk of head injuries that come from it. "I think the glorified violence is really the Achilles heel for the NHL," said Charles "Bucky" Zimmerman, an attorney at Zimmerman Reed that filed the lawsuit on behalf of the players. "If anything comes of this, the focus on the glorified violence and perhaps the change to that will be a good thing." The lawsuit, which is similar to one brought by former football players against the NFL, joins others filed by hockey players in Washington and New York and seeks monetary damages and increased medical monitoring. The NHLPA declined to comment. A message was left with the NHL seeking comment. Zimmerman also worked on the football litigation, which resulted in the NFL agreeing to pay a $765 million settlement to thousands of former players. That settlement is still awaiting a judges approval, but the headlines it generated have been partially responsible for hockey players mounting their own case against the NHL. "Weve seen it in football. Its now here in hockey. Its of the same genesis," Zimmerman said. "Theres knowledge, we believe, that these type of concussive injuries were known and protections were not put in place appropriately enough and fast enough and rules changes were not implemented even today in fighting. "Players continue to be at risk aand suffer as a result of those risks that they take on behalf of the sport.dddddddddddd We think those are unreasonable and they should be changed and the players should be compensated." The lawsuit alleges "the NHL hid or minimized concussion risks from its players, thereby putting them at a substantially higher risk for developing memory loss, depression, cognitive difficulties, and even brain related diseases such as dementia, Alzheimers disease, and Parkinsons disease." One argument that tries to separate the NFL litigation from the NHL case is that by engaging in fighting, players willfully take on the health risks that could come from that. "You could make that argument only to a point," Zimmerman said. "And the point is that the fighting arena would not exist and would be outlawed as it is in every other level of the game had the NHL not condoned it and sold tickets based upon it and promoted the sport in that way. Its not the players that promote the sport in that way because the players dont implement the rules. Its the league that implements the rules. If they would outlaw fighting, there wouldnt be people who would fight." Zimmerman said he thinks more players will join the litigation much in the same way the group of plaintiffs in the NFL case exponentially grew as it progressed. "The light went on for them as the football players story was becoming more told," Zimmerman said. "I think the hockey players started to see that their story was going to be heard and told. Its not that we havent known about football players or hockey players getting hurt. Its now become more important that we talk about it and do something about it rather than just benignly let it continue into the future." ' ' '
OAKLAND, Calif. -- The Oakland Athletics have acquired left-hander Justin Marks from the Kansas City Royals for cash considerations. The As announced the deal Friday and said they optioned Marks to Triple-A Sacramento. Oakland later designated outfielder Kent Matthes for assignment to clear a spot for Marks on the 40-man roster. GLENDALE, Ariz. -- The Phoenix Coyotes capped a strange night with whats become their best attribute: Resiliency. Shane Doan scored his second goal to cap a rally late in regulation and the Phoenix Coyotes scored on both attempts in the shootout to end Washingtons five-game winning streak with a 4-3 victory Saturday night. "We talked about in the last five minutes, we just need one to give us a chance at another one," Doan said. "We count on so many guys thats what makes it so fun to be on this team." The Coyotes gave the NHLs best power play far too many chances, didnt capitalize enough on the numerous chances they got and generally found ways to get in their own way until late in regulation. They still found a way to win it. Phoenix took an early lead on Doans first goal, then gave up three goals in a strange second period that included a penalty for too many men on the ice by Washington while it was on a power play and a rare delay of game call against Phoenix goalie Mike Smith for playing the puck across the red line. Trailing 3-1 and with several fans heading for the exits, Phoenix picked up the pace in the third period and rallied with goals by Lauri Korpikoski, who scored as he was falling to the ice, and Doans fourth goal in three games on a power play with 1:46 left. Antoine Vermette and Mikkel Boedker scored in the shootout and Washington failed on its two attempts to lose for the first time in five shootouts. Phoenix has won six of seven. "It was a weird game," Coyotes coach Dave Tippett said. "Well take the points and move on." Washington rallied after giving up the early goal, surviving a string of penalties in the second period to take a 3-1 lead. Troy Brouwer and John Carlson both scored on the power play -- thats seven in three games for the Caps -- and Joel Ward added his seventh of the season late. The Capitals just couldnt finish off the scrappy Coyotes, unable to capitalize on a couple of two-man advantages, giving up the two late goals and failing to even get a shot off on one shootout attempt. "We got a point, Im sure were not happy right now, but well just recharge it for tomorrow," Washington coach Adam Oates said. Alex Ovechkin and the Capitals hadnt played in the desert since 2011 so theere was plenty of anticipation in the Valley of the Sun for this one.dddddddddddd It certainly didnt hurt that both teams have been playing well; Washington had outscored opponents 17-6 during a four-game winning streak and Phoenix had won five of six. The Caps forte has been special teams; theyre the NHLs best on the power play and the penalty kill. The Coyotes didnt have any trouble against Washingtons penalty kill early, scoring 22 seconds into their first chance with the man advantage midway through the first period. Doan got it, gathering a rebound off a shot by Keith Yandle and flipping a wrister past Michal Neuvirth. The Coyotes got themselves in trouble after that with a march to the penalty box. Phoenix killed off the first two penalties, but Brouwer scored 38 seconds into the second period when he was left alone at Phoenixs blue line and beat Smith with a hard shot from the right circle. Jordan Szwarz went into the box three minutes later for high-sticking and Washington needed 19 seconds to capitalize, going up 2-1 on a shot from the slot by Carlson after some quick passing. A carousel to the penalty box followed, including six straight power play minutes for Phoenix and the call against Smith, who played the puck across the red line as he was skating off for an extra attacker. Once the chaos ended, Ward put the Capitals up 3-1 with a one-timer from along the goal line after the puck squirted his direction. Washington appeared to be in control, but Korpikoski scored on a backhander as he was falling to the ice and Doan scored for the seventh time in eight games with a wrister after Caps rookie Nate Schmidt was called for delay of game for sending the puck over the glass from his own end. "Too many penalties just in general," Oates said. "You know its going come back and bite you and it did." Notes: Phoenix will play at Washington on March 8, marking the first time these teams have played twice in a season since 2001-02. ... ISTANBUL, Turkey -- South Korea beat Colombia in a penalty shootout at the Under-20 World Cup on Wednesday to join Ghana, Chile and Iraq in the quarterfinals. Having played out a 1-1 draw after extra time, Colombia was trailing 8-7 in the shootout when defender Daivy Balanta sent the last penalty over the crossbar. South Korea will now play Iraq, which needed extra time to beat Paraguay 1-0. Ghana and Chile will meet in the quarterfinals after both teams won their last-16 matches over 90 minutes earlier in the day. Ghana came from a goal down to beat Portugal 3-2 while two late goals earned the Chileans a 2-0 victory over Croatia. Balantas spot-kick wasnt the only one that failed to find the net. Earlier in the series, Song Ju-hun missed for South Korea while Felipe Aguilar saw his attempt saved by goalkeeper Lee Chang-geun. Song had given South Korea the lead in the 16th minute when he beat goalkeeper Cristian Bonilla with a low shot after the Colombia defence failed to clear from the area. Colombia pressed long for an equalizer and had to wait until the fourth minute of injury time before captain Juan Quintero scored with a fierce free kick that beat Lee at the near post. The penalty shootout soon became inevitable as neither side was willing to take any risks by pushing forward in extra time. It was different story in the other late game, though, after Iraq and Paraguay has finished 0-0 after 90 minutes, with the South Americans having been reduced to 10 men in the 80th. Iraq substitute Farhan Shakor scored the only goal with a firm header past goalkeeper Diego Morel in the fourth minute of extra time. Paraguay, which defeated Argentina in qualifying, was without suspended captain Gustavo Gomez. It also lost Arnaldo Sanabria, who was booked in the 70th and sent off after another foul 10 minutes later. Iraq continued a remarkable run in its first appearance in the tournament for 12 years. It won Group E, where it drew 2-2 with England, and will now play in the quarterfinals for the second time -- having also reached the last eight in 1989. Earlier, substitute Yiadom Boakye set up the equalizer and then scored a late winner as Ghana rallied to beat Portugal. Ghana was 2-1 down when Boakye came on the 75th. Four minutes later, Portugal goalkeeper Jose Sa saved his shot but allowed Michael Anaba to pounce on the rebound for the equalizer. Boakye then followed up by sending a free kick through the two-man wall in the 85th. Kennedy Ashia had put Ghana ahead with a 25-meter (yard) effort in the 19th minute. However, defenders Tiago Ferreira and Edgar both scored within the space of three minutes to put Portugal 2-1 up in the 73rd. Ghana was the last team to qualify for the knockout stage, after losing two group matches and narrowly advancing on goal difference following a 4-1 defeat of the United States. Portugal, the 2011 runner-up, had scored the most goals in the group stage but failed to convert two early chances. Aladje was left unmarked but sent his effort over the crossbar after 15 seconds while Bruma, who scored five times in three group matches, shot wide a minute later. Portugal dominated possession but ultimately paid the price for failing to make it count. Chile similarly controlled large parts of its match against Croatia, which has never gone beyond the round of 16, but created few chances. Nicolas Castillo finally broke the deadlock when he was set up by Sebastian Martinez and headed the ball backward over Croatia goalkeeper Oliver Zelenika in the 81st. Four minutes later, Croatia defender Jozo Simunovic sent a Christian Bravo cross past his own goalkeeper. Chile finished third in 2007 but failed to qualify for the next two editions. The other two quarterfinals are France vs. Uzbekistan and Uruguay vs. Spain. Daniel Vogelbach Mariners Jersey . Rick Ralph hosts the Official Jets Pre-game Show at 5pm.FORT MYERS, Fla. -- Boston Red Sox right-hander Ryan Dempster plans to take this season off, a decision that surprised teammates and will cost the 16-year veteran $13.25 million in salary. Dempster said Sunday he is stepping away for physical reasons and to spend more time with his family. But he left a slight opening to play in 2015. "I had an incredible run, a chance to play 16 years in the major leagues and be around a lot of great teammates, made a lot of good friendships, great friendships," Dempster said one day before the first formal spring training workout for pitchers and catchers. "Im totally comfortable with it. Im at peace with my decision." Dempster, whose contract expires after this season, finished his only year with the Red Sox with an 8-9 record and a 4.57 ERA and didnt get a start during their post-season run to a World Series title. "The past few years have been tougher and tougher," he said. "As you get older, going through some things, some issues I have with my neck that have made it harder and harder to throw a baseball and throw it like Im accustomed to throw it" contributed to his decision. And, he said, "Ive got three amazing children that I want to watch grow up and be around." The Red Sox still have a solid veteran rotation with Jon Lester, Clay Buchholz, John Lackey, Jake Peavy and Felix Doubront, and several promising young starters. If theyre seeking a veteran to add depth, they could consider right-handed free agents Ervin Santana and Ubaldo Jimenez. "I like the staff that we have," manager John Farrell said. Several teammates watched as Dempster made his announcement, including Lester, Buchholz, Lackey, Peavy, first baseman Mike Napoli, second baseman Dustin Pedroia, catcher David Ross and reliever Andrew Miller. "Everybody wants to soak in their last moments of being around him," Miller said. "Hes a great guy. He left quite his mark and will be remembered fondly around here." The decision, Miller said, "was a shock to everybody." Dempster said he spoke with the club a few weeks ago about taking the season off. And what about 2015? "I dont know yet," he said. "If something changes then, obviously, something changes, but I dont see that changing." Dempster pitched with the Florida Marlins, Cincinnati Reds, Chicago Cubs, Texas Rangers and Red Sox. He is 132--133 with a 4.dddddddddddd35 ERA and made the All-Star team in 2008 when he went 17-6 with a 2.96 ERA with the Cubs. He was Chicagos closer from 2005-07, totalling 85 saves. He began the 2012 season with the Cubs then went to the Rangers at the trade deadline. Boston signed Dempster to a $26.5 million, two-year deal before last season. He will lose half that amount by sitting out this year. "The money was not that much of a difficult decision," he said, but "Im a little sad that I wont be around" his teammates as they try to defend their championship. "There arent too many people who could say that the time is right to walk away from a game that I love, thats treated me so well," Red Sox reliever Craig Breslow said, "and particularly when theres a pretty sizeable amount of money thats being left on the table." General manager Ben Cherington said Dempster told him of the decision about 10 days ago. "It came out of left field," Cherington said. Players didnt find out until Sunday. "At first I didnt really know what to say. It caught me off guard," Napoli said. "Thats how everyone wants to go out, on their own terms." Dempster was praised for his upbeat personality that helped the Red Sox recover from a collapse at the end of the 2012 season and transform the clubhouse into a positive place. Farrell also admired the way he accepted his demotion from the rotation for the post-season. "A consummate team player," Farrell said. While Dempster struggled at times on the field last year, he kept the clubhouse loose. "His comedic value will be sorely missed," Miller said. Dempster pitched just one inning in the World Series, a scoreless ninth in Bostons 8-1 win over St. Louis in Game 1. He ended it by striking out Matt Adams. "If this is the end, then this is the end, and what a great way to go out," Dempster said. Notes: The Red Sox signed right-hander Francisco Cordero to a minor-league contract with an invitation to the major-league camp. A closer for most of his career, he didnt pitch last year after struggling in 2012. In 14 seasons with six teams, he is 47-53 with a 3.38 ERA and 329 saves. ... Miller and the Red Sox agreed to a one-year contract worth $1,903,125, avoiding arbitration. Miller had asked for $2.15 million and had been offered $1.55 million. He made $1,475,000 last year. Boston has no remaining players in arbitration. ' ' '
SALT LAKE CITY -- Kyle Korver and Paul Millsap made themselves right at home in their return to Utah. Just when Atlanta seemed almost incapable of winning a road game, Korver and Millsap broke the hearts of the fans that cheered them for years to finally help the Hawks break through. Korver scored 26 points and Millsap added 23 against their former team as the Hawks outlasted the Utah Jazz 112-110 on Monday night to snap a six-game losing streak. Millsap said there were times were he almost felt like he wasnt playing on the road "I played in this gym for seven years. I felt real comfortable," he said after helping the Hawks end a 10-game road losing streak. Most of the Atlanta starting lineup spent significant time playing for the Jazz. DeMarre Carroll (2011-13), Korver (2007-10) and Millsap (2006-13) all received warm applause when they were introduced before the game. "It was like a reunion, a family reunion. I saw a lot of familiar faces," Millsap said. But familiarity didnt make it a cakewalk. Korver made all four of his 3-point attempts in his old stomping grounds but never felt totally safe. The Hawks blew a 17-point lead and it was like re-run Korver had seen dozens of times. "I was a part of so many games when the Jazz were down at halftime, just like tonight, and then came roaring back. The crowd gets behind them," Korver said. Jeff Teague had 14 points and the Hawks used a late 16-4 run to salvage a win at the end of a gloomy six-game road trip. The Jazz led 96-93 after Trey Burkes 3-pointer, but Korver started an 8-0 run with a 3-pointer and then a contested jumper to beat the shot clock. Trey Burke made a layup before Millsap countered with two free throws and Korver added two of his own to seemingly put the game out of reach. Trailing 109-100 with 26 seconds left, the Jazz made it interesting with 10 points in the last 16 seconds. "In the second half, we made a significant change but it was a little too late and they made some big shots down the stretch," said Burke, who scored 21 of his 23 points in the second half. Marvin Williams had 18 for the Jazz, who have lost six of their last seven. Carroll had 11 points as the trio of former Jazz-players-turned-Hawks combined for 15 of the Hawks 16 points in the game-clinching run. The Hawks led by 17 points in the first half before the Jazz rallied in the third quarter. Utah outscored Atlanta 36-19 in the period and capped an 18-7 run with Haywards rebound dunk just before the buzzer for an 80-78 edge. "We didnt respond to their pressure and it turned into a heck of a game," Atlanta coach Mike Budenholzer said. Millsap missed five games with a badly bruised knee and then struggled a bit in his first two games back in limited minutes. He regained his All-Star form against his former team, which decided to go with a youth movement and let him sign with the Hawks in the off-season. Millsap was 7 of 14 from the field and had eight rebounds to help the Hawks, who had a tough time matching up with the Jazz inside. Utah outrebounded Atlanta 45-34. The Hawks, desperately trying to hang on to the eighth and final Eastern Conference playoff spot, finally started to see things click in Los Angeles on Saturday before losing 109-108 to the Clippers. "We felt like we needed this big-time. We felt like we fought hard in the previous game and just came up short. I hope this will a good momentum boost going forward. Teague, who missed a key free throw against the Clippers, missed two down the stretch again but made four to help Atlanta avoid its 15th loss in the last 16 games. The Hawks are 3 1/2 games in front of the Knicks in the race for the playoffs. The Jazz just finished their own nightmare of an extended road trip, losing five of their six games before outlasting Philadelphia 104-92 in the finale. The Hawks allowed an average of 113 points on better than 50-per cent shooting, including 44 per cent from 3-point range. But the Hawks made 13 of 29 from beyond the arc to get the win, which is their fourth straight at Utah after dropping their previous 15. "The Jazz have so much tradition and its like one big family here. Once youre part of the Jazz, you never leave all the way," Korver said. NOTES: Former Jazz Hall of Famer Karl Malone sat courtside and used a giant slingshot to hurl balls into the crowd during a timeout. ... But the No. 1 overall pick in this years draft was limited as he continues to recover from surgery to repair a sports hernia. Clowney, who had surgery on June 12, participated in the majority of the drills as Houston started camp with a 2 1/2-hour practice on Saturday morning. But he was held out of 11 on 11 drills late in the workout. The first workout was open to the public and fans cheered as Clowney trotted onto the field for the start of practice. Others squealed and yelled his name as he walked off of it and he flashed a big smile before first taking a second to pull his flowing dreadlocks, which were drenched in sweat from the workout, away from his face. He said hes feeling better, but isnt 100 per cent yet. Despite that Clowney didnt appear to be slowed by the injury and moved around well during practice. He said its up to the trainers if hell be able to take part in drills when the Texans move from shorts and shells to full pads in a few days. "Im just taking it one day at a time," Clowney said. "Im just letting the trainers take it one day at a time and try to come back and get back for the first game." The Texans open the preseason on Aug. 9 at Arizona. Coach Bill OBrien said hell let the trainers decide how much Clowney will do and when. "Weve got the best when it comes to that," OBrien said. "We do that and these guys are edgy, they want to get going, but its a long season. So we bring them back at their pace. When theyre ready to go, theyll go." "Just keep getting better and better each day." Hell pair with 2012 Defensive Player of the Year J.J. Watt to beef up Houstons already solid pass rush. Clowney had 130 tackles, 24 sacks, 47 tackles for losses and 20 quarterback pressures in a three-year career at South Carolina. He also caused a school-record nine fumbles and deflected seven passes. The 21-year-old also set a South Carolina record with 13 sacks in 2012. Watt said hes eager to see how Clowney and the rest of Houstons rookies perform in camp. "Training camp is a good time for rookies to get their feet wet," Watt said. "Once we finally put the pads on, it will be a good opportunity to see how they perform in a situation like that. So it will be exciting." Clowneys still soaking in the fact that he now gets to play with people he watched over the past several years. "Its very exciting," he said. "It was exciting the first time I got out here with the guys I looked up to coming into the NFL -- J.J. Watt, Johnathan Joseph, D.J. (Swearinger), guys like that on my team I just I looked up to before I got here. So now that Im here with them, its even better." Clowney missed Houstons three-day minicamp because of his surgery, but got going early by participating in Houstons off-season workouts leading up to that camp. He feels as if that helped him improve since he was drafted in May. "Im a lot better than where I was," he said. "Ive learned a lot of the playbook already. Coach already said that we look good out there, so weve just got to keep pushing." ' ' '
Orlando, FL - The Orlando Magic waived Hedo Turkoglu Friday, four days before the veteran forwards $12 million salary for this season would have become fully guaranteed. Turkoglu, a key contributor to Orlandos surprise run to the 2009 NBA Finals, did not appear in a game this season as the team attempted to move the 34- year-old or negotiate a buyout of his contract. He participated in only 11 games for the Magic in 2012-13, missing part of that campaign due to a suspension for testing positive for a performance-enhancing substance. The Turkish native averaged just 2.9 points and 2.4 rebounds last season. During his first 13 years in the NBA, eight of which were spent with the Magic over two separate stints, Turkoglu averaged 11.9 points and 4.2 rebounds while shooting 38.1 percent from 3-point range. Trestman said his focus is on preparing for Sundays game against Detroit and halting a three-game skid.It would help if Cutler hung onto the ball. He leads the league with 18 interceptions and 24 turnovers after signing a seven-year contract at the end of last year, and Trestman didnt try to sugarcoat things when he was asked about making sure Cutler is performing at his best.I think thats evident I havent, up to this point, said Trestman, who was hired two years ago to do just that. Am I working at it? Yes. But weve seen moments, but we havent done it on a consistent basis. I cant hide from that. I havent been able and we havent been able to do the thing that we want to get done. Were working toward that. But the answer to that is obvious. As for Trestmans future? The coach hears the rumblings. Were aware that theres noise out there, he said. After all, he hired Trestman over Bruce Arians two years ago and put together a team that took a big step back after going 8-8 last season. The defence continues to rank among the leagues worst, but the biggest issue is the regression of the offence. The Bears have gone from second to 19th in scoring and have failed to hit the 30-point mark this season. They hired Trestman hoping he would get the most out of Cutler. But thats not happening this season. But its not all about Jay. Its about our entire offence, working together to get it done, Trestman said._____Online: http://pro32.ap.org/poll and http://twitter.com/AP_NFL ' ' '

"It was an almost perfect night," Atletico coach Diego Simeone said. The 2013 World Series hasnt even started and many are already dubbing this MLB post-season to be the "Year of the Pitcher." No team has managed to score better than three runs more than once in the League Championship round, with each club pitching a shutout in the opening three games. So, whats behind this years pitching dominance? The first and most obvious factor is sheer talent. Each of the four remaining playoff teams boast a blend of ace talent and veteran presence that has led to individual pitchers stepping up and tossing gem after gem to will their teams toward a pennant. Justin Verlander, Clayton Kershaw, Jake Peavy and Zack Greinke all have Cy Young Awards on their resumes. Max Scherzer is very likely to join that group once the 2013 hardware gets handed out, while Cardinals ace Adam Wainwright led the NL in wins and logged more innings than any other pitcher during the regular season. But its not just those pitchers – lest we forget David Prices Wild Card game heroics, Anibal Sanchez near-no-hitter or the efforts of Red Sox vets John Lackey and Jon Lester – that are forming the narrative. Rookies like Michael Wacha, Hyun-Jun Ryu and Sonny Gray have all tossed gems that have pushed the "Year of the Pitcher" to the forefront. While Verlander would eventually get the better of Gray in the decisive NLDS game and Ryu essentially is a rookie in name only (being 26 and a veteran of seven dominant seasons in Korea), Wacha has certainly emerged as one of Octobers biggest stars. Drafted just over a year ago – 19th overall by the Cards in 2012 – Wacha has taken a huge leap forward this fall, flirting with a no-hitter against the Pittsburgh Pirates in the NLDS and following that up with a six-plus-inning shutout performance to power a 1-0 NLCS Game 2 Cardinals win over Kershaw. It would be an easy fix to just flat-out state that the pitching has been that good, but its not like these starters have been facing inferior lineups.dddddddddddd. All four of these teams have the potential to be offensive juggernauts, with the Red Sox, Tigers and Cardinals having finished top-three in runs scored in 2013. All four teams can boast of game-breaking bats in their line-up, from Miguel "Triple Crown" Cabrera to the playoff pedigree of David Ortiz, clutch performers like Carlos Beltran and David Freese to break-out stars like Yasiel Puig. But still, the Red Sox 1-0 win on Tuesday marked the fourth of this years post-season, tying a record for most 1-0 games in a single post-season since the dawn of the LCS era, previously set in 1991 with all four involving the Atlanta Braves three-headed monster of Tom Glavine, John Smoltz and Steve Avery. History might tell us that its just a recurring trend swinging back the pitchers way. Since the inception of the League Championship Series MVP Awards in 1977 (NL) and 1980 (AL), starting pitchers seem to claim the award in clusters. Of the 10 pitchers that have won ALCS MVP there have been three separate occasions of three pitchers winning the award in a five-year span or less. More pitchers have claimed the NLCS MVP Award (12), but those wins, too have come largely thanks to three- and four-year spans of pitching dominance. Whats even more curious is that those spans basically overlap. Between 1990 and 1995 a starting pitcher won the LCS MVP six out of 10 times. Between 1997 and 2001 starters again took six of 10. The trend would repeat itself once more between 2005 and 2009. Since 2009, however, no starting pitcher has won either the LCS or World Series MVP Award. Is this season just the start of another cycle? Regardless of why its happening, the starting pitchers appear to be on a collective roll this October and were only just past the half-way point of the month. What do you think is behind this post-seasons pitching dominance? As always, its Your! Call. ' ' '

BALTIMORE -- Though concerned about the potential short-term loss of injured Baltimore Orioles teammate Chris Davis, Adam Jones couldnt help but marvel at the performance of Kansas City Royals rookie Yordano Ventura. The severity of the injury was not immediately known, but Davis looked to be in obvious discomfort as he walked toward the dugout following a third-inning flyout. "Well know more about it (Saturday)," Davis said. "Ive never had an oblique strain or whatever you want to call it, but it doesnt feel so bad right now that I cant move or anything like that. So I think right now well just take it one day at a time." Davis led the majors with 53 home runs and 138 RBIs last season. Although he has only two homers this year, Davis reached base in a career-high 20 straight games before going 0 for 2 in this one. He hopes to get back quickly and start another streak. "If we can get ahead of it right now and make it just a bump in the road as opposed to a big obstacle, Ill be better off," said Davis, who could not recall a specific play or swing that caused the injury. "Just discomfort the last few days," he said. The Orioles wont be the same if Davis must go to the 15-day disabled list. "CD is a big, big part of our lineup and part of our plan," Jones said. "Whatever it is, you just want him to take his time and not rush it because it could be longer." Ventura (2-1) walked two and hit a batter in his seventh major league start. The 22-year-old, who had never before gone longer than seven innings, stymied a club that totalled 21 runs in its previous two games. "I think thats as good as Ive seen him," manager Ned Yost said. "He had everything going tonight. I mean good fastball, his curveball -- that was probably the most consistent curveball hes had all year -- and a great changeup. He kept his pitch count down and really never got into much trouble. He just pitched a great game." Baltimore got only one runner past second base against the hard-throwing Ventura, a non-drafted free agent from the Dominican Republic. Royals pitcher Bruce Chen, serving as a translator for Ventura, said, "He felt like it went really well, but he wants to thank the team for supporting him, playing good defence and scoring a lot of runs. He thought we did a really good job of calling the game." Greg Holland worked a perfect ninth to finish off the Royals second shutout of the season. Kansas City is 11-0 when scoring at least four runs and 0-11 when scoring three runs or less. Ubaldo Jimenez (0-4) allowed four runs and six hits in six-plus innings. The right-hander has lost four of his five starts with the Orioles, who signed him to a $50 million, four-year contract in February. After the start of the game was delayed 55 minutes by rain, the Royals wasted no time in taking a 2-0 lead. Jimenez walked Omar Infante and gave up a single to Eric Hosmer before yielding RBI singles to Billy Butler and Alex Gordon. "In the first inning, I couldnt find the strike zone," Jimenez said. "After that, I was able to throw the fastball and breaking ball for strikes." Alcides Escobar reached third with no outs in Kansas City second, but was stranded. The Orioles got two singles in both the second and fourth innings before Ventura worked out of trouble. The Royals chased Jimenez during a two-run seventh. Escobar walked and Jarrod Dyson reached on a bunt before Nori Aoki delivered an RBI single past the drawn-in infield and Infante singled in a run on reliever T.J. McFarlands first pitch. Butler made it 5-0 in the ninth with a two-out RBI double. NOTES: Orioles 3B Manny Machado (knee) began his rehabilitation assignment with Class A Frederick. Four years after being Minnesotas top pick in the 2009 draft, Gibson pitched six solid innings, and Trevor Plouffe homered to help the Twins beat the Kansas City Royals 6-2 on Saturday. The long road from draft day to starting pitcher included a Tommy John-surgery detour, but it ultimately ended with Gibson becoming Minnesotas first first-round pick to win a start in his major league debut. He did it in front of about 30 family members and friends. "It was an amazing day, really," Gibson said. "I was pretty nervous the last couple of days leading up to it, and was able to calm the nerves somehow. I think seeing a couple of familiar faces before I started throwing, and a little prayer before the game definitely helped me calm my nerves, but it was a great day." Gibson (1-0) allowed two runs and eight hits, and he struck out five. He allowed two runs in the third inning on RBI singles by Alcides Escobar and Salvador Perez, and he hit Escobar in the fifth. But he worked out of several jams and recorded his first 1-2-3 inning in the sixth thanks to some nice defence by Pedro Florimon at short. "Weve been waiting for this for a while, and Im sure he has, too," Twins manager Ron Gardenhire said. "Going through the elbow thing, and all the rehab and all the hard work that hes put in, its a big moment. A big moment for him." Gibson had plenty of early help as Minnesota scored five in the first inning. Wade Davis (4-6) was yanked after giving up another run in the second with no one out. The one-inning outing marked Davis shortest outing of the season for the Royals, who have lost seven of 10. "Never," Davis said when asked if hed ever had a similar outing. "Not that short, anyways. Just frustrating to look back and look how that played out." On Friday night, the Royals hit a season-high four homers against the Twins. They couldnt muster much of anything against Gibson through six innings, or against relievers Brian Duensing, Casey Fien or Glen Perkins. Kansas CCity loaded the bases with one out against Fien in the eighth, but Lorenzo Cain and Miguel Tejada both struck out swinging.dddddddddddd "We got kind of put in a hole early there," first baseman Eric Hosmer said. "We were trying to inch back, and inch back. Just fell short." Gibsons long-awaited arrival to the Twins rotation came this week after starter Mike Pelfrey was placed on the disabled list because of a strained back. He received the loudest cheers during pregame introductions, and he delighted the crowd by striking out slugger Billy Butler to end the first inning. "I think everybody in this room knows that feeling the first day that they step out there, nerves are going, but he handled it about as good as you could," catcher Joe Mauer said. Minnesota had been outscored 74-39 in the first inning this season, but the Twins pounced right away on Davis, who gave up a two-run double to Justin Morneau and a two-run homer to Plouffe. Florimons RBI-single made it 5-0, and Gibson calmly handled the Royals lineup the rest of the way with pitches that consistently reached into the 90-mph range. "You hear a lot about him, and hes got great makeup and great pitches, and hes going to be good one," Mauer said. Ive never seen a 50-pitch inning," Royals manager Ned Yost said. . Plouffe stretched his hitting streak to 11 games, the second longest of his career. OTTAWA -- The Minnesota Wild didnt take long to rebound from an ugly loss. Captain Mikko Koivu had a goal and two assists to lead the Wild to a 4-3 win over the Ottawa Senators on Wednesday. Koivu scored the winning goal with less than three minutes to play, allowing the Wild to rebound from the disappointment of Tuesdays 6-2 loss at Montreal. Former Senator Dany Heatley had a goal and an assist for the Wild (14-5-4) as did Jonas Brodin. Jason Pominville had the other Minnesota goal while Zach Parise had two assists. "I felt good going into this game and I felt confident that we were going to play really hard because of our leadership and because of the way weve responded in the past," Wild coach Mike Yeo said. "Ive got a lot of confidence in that leadership but the one thing I was worried about was our legs after three games in four days. I thought it was a factor in the first period but I thought our guys were able to find another gear." Milan Michalek scored on the power play as the teams approached the midway point of the third period to pull Ottawa even with the Wild, and it looked as if that goal would at least get the Senators to overtime. "Its disappointing. We got the game tied up, but again, were chasing the game. Any time youre chasing the game, it makes the game hard," Senators coach Paul MacLean said. Kyle Turris and Mika Zibanejad also scored for the Senators (8-10-4), who have lost three straight games and four of their past five. "Its very disappointing, its frustrating. We came out and had our best first period of the year. We played a pretty solid game but again, theres one or two mistakes that we let happen and they capitalized on," Turris said. A pair of goals in the second period allowed the Wild to take a 3-2 lead into the third, and Heatley played a part in both. He drew a primary assist on Brodins goal that tied the game 2-2 exactly three minutes into the period and then jammed in a loose puck while behind the net at 6:05. Heatley pushed a loose puck to the front of the net and then beat Senators defenceman Erik Karlsson to the puck before banking it off goaltender Craig Andersons right pad and in, all while standing behind the goal-line. "Whether were in Ottawa or not were worried about our team and (Tuesday) night wasnt acceptable and I think everyone thought that way. We needed to come back with a big win and we did," said Heatley, who had a sour parting of the ways after four season in the Senators organization. The Wild had the only power play of the first period but it proved to be fruitful for both sides while Jared Cowen sat in the penalty box for interference. The Senators opened the scoring with a short-handed goal on a nifty pass from Clarke MacArthur to Turris. With his stick between his legs, MacArthur fed Turris in the slot and his one-timer slowly trickled across the goal-line at 5:54. But just 59 seconds later Pominville took a pass at the corner of the face-off circle and beat Anderson with a quick shot inside the near post. Pominville, who leads the Wild with 13 goals, skated in the warm-up but was listed as a scratch on the starting line up before eventually suiting up. Zibanejad gave the Senators the lead at 11:11 but the celebration was short-lived. The Senators outshot the Wild 37-25, making it just the sixth time the season they have outshot their opposition. It was also just the sixth time in 22 games they have allowed fewer than 30 shots. "On a positive side of it, we look at the stat sheet and the balance (shots on goal) is starting to go the other way. So thats a positive for us. We only gave up 25 shots on our net. The scoring chances are unofficially in our favour, we gave up a lot less," MacLean said. "Are we going in the right direction? We believe so, but we wont know until our next game." Notes: The Senators played their 800th home game in franchise history, and 676th at the building currently named the Canadian Tire Centre ... The Senators have lost only 15 man-games to injury all season. The Wild have lost 62 ... The Wild recalled forward Jason Zucker from the Iowa Wild of the American Hockey League. Zucker had four goals and eight points in 12 games with Iowa this season ... Minnesota has allowed a league-low 23 five-on-five goals this season ... Kings Ransom With the Los Angeles Kings fighting for a Western Conference playoff berth and just three points up on the wild card zone, is it time for general manager Dean Lombardi to pull the trigger on a deal? The Hockey News looks back at one of Lombardis shrewdest moves - sending Jack Johnson and a first rounder to the Blue Jackets in exchange for Jeff Carter in 2012 – and wonders if the same type of shake-up is available this season. Former Kings Matt Moulson and Mike Cammalleri would work - THN muses - but even a cheaper option like Brad Boyes could also do the trick. Not Going Wild The Minnesota Wild turned heads at the 2013 trade deadline by letting go of prime assets like Johan Larsson, Matt Hackett and a pair of high draft picks for then-Sabres captain Jason Pominville. So, naturally, surrendering all those future assets would naturally take them out of the running to add a major piece this year, right? Not necessarilyy so, says Wild GM Chuck Fletcher.dddddddddddd He told the Minneapolis Star-Tribune that he intends to be more cautious this deadline, but that he wont say no to the right deal. "In a perfect world, I dont want to trade first-round picks in consecutive years," Fletcher told the Star-Trib. "If opportunities come up, sometimes you have to do things, and this first round isnt as deep and our scouts always seem to deliver no matter what picks I leave them with. But it would have to be something pretty special. Id like our guys to have a first-rounder this year." Blue Line Bolts Thanks to injuries on the blue line including Mattias Ohlund and Brian Lee, the Tampa Bay Lightning find themselves with a defence budget to work with ahead of the deadline. With about $3 million in available cap space, the Tampa Bay Times envisions the Bolts looking for a blue line stalwart to help the likes of Victor Hedman and Mark Barberio. The Islanders Andrew MacDonald and Detroits Kyle Quincey headline the Times wishlist. MacDonald averages the seventh-highest ice-time in the league while Quincey - a more expensive rental option would be a more stay-at-home pick-up. ' ' '
CAIRO, Egypt -- The Confederation of African Football has moved the Super Cup game between Egypts Al Ahly and Tunisias Sfaxien to a smaller stadium in Cairo. CAF also brought the match between the winners of the African Champions League and Confederation Cup forward from Feb. 22 to Feb. 20. The Confederation initially said the match would be at the 75,000-seat Cairo International Stadium, raising concerns as games in front of large crowds in Egypt have been rare since more than 70 people, mostly Al Ahly fans, were killed at a stadium riot in 2012. CAF says the switch to a 30,000-capacity military venue which hosted the Egypt-Ghana World Cup playoff last year was for "organizational reasons." Fans clashed with police before Ahlys victory in Novembers Champions League final at another Cairo stadium. Lamar Odom Jersey . Warburton replaces Justin Tipuric, one of three changes announced on Tuesday by coach Warren Gatland. Given their trouble scoring goals in recent seasons, the Phoenix Coyotes arent the first choice for fantasy players, but that allows for some potential value to be found. Top Picks: He can unnoticed in the desert, but RW Radim Vrbata continues to excel for the Coyotes. His 47 goals in 111 games over the last two seasons has his goals-per-game rate (0.42) on par with the likes of Corey Perry and Ilya Kovalchuk. The bonus is that Vrbata shouldnt cost that kind of premium on draft day and hes a quality No. 2 right winger. The best of Phoenixs fantasy contributors, not surprisingly, arent forwards. D Keith Yandle has 173 points over the last four seasons, ranking third among defencemen, behind only Duncan Keith and Dan Boyle, and his overall game puts him on the fringe of being a No. 1 fantasy defenceman. Rising star Oliver Ekman-Larsson may be a better "real" than fantasy defnceman, but 56 points over the last two seasons ranks 28th among defencemen and, as he ascends into Norris Trophy consideration, hes playing more than 25 minutes per game. Hes well worth a spot as a No. 2 fantasy blueliner. The wildcard for the Coyotes is G Mike Smith, whose save percentage dropped from .930 in 2011-2012 to .910 last season. Smiths career save percentage, in 263 games, is .913, so hes okay, but if he happens to be better than that while starting 65 games for the Coyotes, hes going to have premium fantasy value. His up-and-down history makes him an easier sell as a strong No. 2 instead of as the No. 1 your fantasy squad banks on. Value Plays: There is value to the durability of RW Shane Doan, who has missed 28 games over the last 11 seasons, but hes a 36-year-old whose scoring rate is declining -- last years 0.56 points per game was his lowest since 1998-1999 -- so hes still worth having in most fformats, but as a No.dddddddddddd 3 option on the right side. Brought in to help jumpstart the Coyotes offence, C Mike Ribeiro is a five-time 60-point scorer who put up 27 of his 49 points last year with the man advantage. Ribeiro, 33, is a productive player but, given younger and better options he, like Doan, fits best as a No. 3 for fantasy owners. Sleepers/Breakthrough: 23-year-old LW Mikkel Boedker had somewhat of a breakthrough season last year, as his 26 points in 48 games (0.54 ppg) was the best scoring rate of his career. However, with a real opportunity to play top line minutes, his scoring numbers should increase, particularly with a rebound in his shooting percentage from a career-low 8.4% last year. Towering C Martin Hanzal typically doesnt score enough to generate fantasy interest, having never scored more than 35 points in a season, but hes a big, physical presence with enough hits (339 in 103 games over the last two seasons) to generate interest in deep leagues when hes healthy. Along the same lines, LW Rob Klinkhammer has value in deep leagues for the same reason. Hes a 27-year-old who has played 38 career NHL games, but has 115 hits in those games and contributed 11 points in 22 games for the Coyotes last season. Rookies: There arent a lot of impact rookies in the Coyotes system, but C Max Domi, the 12th overall pick in the 2013 Draft, would only stick if he could play in a scoring role. Domi doesnt have ideal size, but has slick hands and had a big year for London in the Ontario Hockey League, scoring 87 points in 64 regular season games, then adding 32 points in 21 playoff games. LOS ANGELES - On a night that seemed destined to belong to Kobe Bryant and the Lakers, it was the Toronto Raptors and their first-year general manager that stole the show. With only 11 players in uniform, just eight of which got into the game, the Raptors spoiled Bryants disappointing season debut just hours after Masai Ujiri pulled off a franchise-altering move. "I really applaud our players for the fact they came in and banded together," Raptors coach Dwane Casey said following a 106-94 victory in the aftermath of Sunday evenings trade that sent Rudy Gay to Sacramento in a seven-player swap. Set to board the team bus and make his way over to Staples Center, Gay was told to hang back at the hotel. He had been dealt. He was shocked. So too were Aaron Gray and Quincy Acy - who are alsoNew heading to the Kings in the deal - and the rest of their teammates, most of whom found out about the transaction upon arriving at the arena. As Toronto said goodbye to its best, or at least highest paid player, the Lakers welcomed theirs back. Nearly eight months after tearing his left Achilles, Bryant returned to the court, scoring just nine points and committing eight turnovers in 28 minutes of action. Without Gay, along with Gray, Acy and Tyler Hansbrough - who sat out with a sprained left shoulder - the Raptors led wire-to-wire and snapped a five-game losing streak, playing some of their best and most inspired basketball of the season. "Like I told the team," Casey said, "thats the way were going to play, no matter who is in uniform." "Were going to continue to play that way or theyre not going to continue to play. Thats the way its got to be. No disrespect to anyone but we have to play as a unit to be successful." In the absence of Gay - who was taking a career-most 18.6 shots per game while shooting a career-worst 29 per cent - the Raptors offence looked more diverse and cohesive. Toronto registered 19 assists as a team and 13 from the backcourt tandem of Kyle Lowry and DeMar DeRozan while California-native Amir Johnson led the way with a career-best 32 points on an efficient 14-of-17 from the field. "Tonights winning helps lift the cloud," Casey insisted, unable to comment directly on the trade until its made official following a conference call with the league on Monday. "Everyones talking about Kobe coming back and the trade but our guys had what you have to have; a discipline." "I told our guys, no matter what happened or whats in the paper or in the media, we have to be disciplined and focused on what weve got to do, our jobs here. We cant control whos in uniform, whos traded." Gray took the news in stride, learning about the deal during his pre-game workout at the arena. The veteran - who turned 27 on Saturday - finished his workout and had a smile on his face as he cracked jokes and bid his teammates farewell in the visitors locker room. Acy, 23, was more emotional after being traded for the first time, by the only team hes known in his professional career. "Big thank you to the Toronto Raptors organization for drafting me and giving me a chance," he tweeted Sunday night. "Imma miss everything about the city and the fans and the organization as a whole, thanks for helping mold me." "It was kind of a bit emotional," Johnson said, comparing it to the day Gay was acquired nearly 10 months prior, when the Raptors said goodbye to Jose Calderon and Ed Davis prior to a game in Atlanta. Johnson spoke with Gay over the phone, thanking him for everything he gave the team and the city during his brief tenure in Toronto. Lowry, his best friend, exchanged texts with him throughout the evening. "It was difficult, especially for me," said Lowry, Gay being the godfather of his son. "At the end of the day its a business and we have to move on. Hes still going to be my boy. Hes still going to be everyone on this teams boy." "We had to block it out and just play." Although the Raptors say goodbye to their most talented player, they may be a better team - in both the short and long term - because of it. Less, sometimes is more, evident in their win on Sunday. Without Gay - an inefficient, high-volume scorer - there are more shots to be distributed amongst more efficient players, the ball doesnt stick nearly as much and the team can focus on the continued development of DeRozan, Jonas Valanciunas and Terrence Ross. The addition of Greivis Vasquez, however temporary it proves to be, should help in the development of those players, specifically Valanciunas. Vasquez, 26, finished second in most improved player voting last season after breaking out in New Orleans and fills a current need at the backup point guard position, also making Lowry expendable in a subsequent trade. John Salmons, 33, will become the oldest player on the Raptors roster. He may or may not report and if he does he may or may not play. Patterson, 24, a stretch-four and Hayes, 30, a hard-nosed rebounder are both serviceable but more than anything else the deal was made to give the Raptors much-needed cap flexibility. In one fell swoop Ujiri turned one gargantuan contract - believed to be untradeable - into four far more manageable deals. Toronto can save roughly $14.5 million for next season. While Hayes will be under contract, making $5.9 million next season, Salmons has a $1.0 million buy-out option on a non-guaranteed $7.0 million deal and Vasquez, along with Patterson could become free agents if the Raptors pull their qualifying offers. "I believe in Masai, hes big time," Casey said after the game. "Hes shown it, hes done some great things. He knows talent, hes a salesman, so I believe in him." The top-seeded Ferrer beat Jerzy Janowicz of Poland 6-4, 4-6, 6-0, while the third-seeded Almagro bounced back from a poor start to down Fabio Fognini 7-6 (6), 6-2. Ferrer used his speed and ground game to overcome Janowiczs powerful serve with key breaks to finish the first set and then start the third. Also, Mikhail Youzhny outlasted Finlands Jarkko Nieminen 7-5, 6-7 (4), 6-4 in 2 hours, 21 minutes to set up an all-Russian semifinal with Dmitry Tursunov. Tursunov ousted Jeremy Chardy of France 6-3, 6-3. Janowicz hit 10 aces with speeds reaching 238 kph (148 mph) on the indoor hard courrt, but his serve also betrayed him.dddddddddddd Two of his four double-faults helped cost him two service games, and on match point he twice served into the net. Ferrer, ranked No. 3, kept scrambling to keep the ball in play until he wore Janowicz down, with one long rally even sending Janowicz crashing into a flower stand. Ferrer also defeated Janowicz in their only previous meeting in the final of the Paris Masters last year when he claimed his first Masters title. "I knew that today was going to be a different match," Ferrer said. "It was a tough one. He served very well and it was difficult to counter that. It was too bad to drop the second set, but I quickly forgot about it." Fognini had a bright start up 3-0 and a chance to serve out the first set before Almagro saved a set point in the tiebreaker en route to finally going up 1-0. Almagro converted four of five break points to put away the Italian. ' ' '

"The first meeting that well have will be tomorrow. ... Our guys would be surprised if we didnt," Carroll said Monday morning. "We really have an eye on whats coming, and we dont dwell on what just happened. Well take this in stride." He appeared at a news conference at a Manhattan hotel with linebacker Malcolm Smith, the MVP of Seattles 43-8 victory over Peyton Manning and the Denver Broncos on Sunday night. Carroll oversees a team with the fourth-youngest roster for a Super Bowl champion, with an average age of 26 years, 175 days, according to STATS. The youngest champs ever were the Pittsburgh Steelers who won the 1975 Super Bowl, and they collected a second consecutive title the next year. Seattle quarterback Russell Wilson just wrapped up his second season in the league, as did Jermaine Kearse, the receiver who caught one of the QBs two touchdown passes Sunday night. Doug Baldwin, who caught the other, is only three years into his pro career, as are star cornerback Richard Sherman and Smith, who at 24 is the fourth-youngest player to be the Super Bowl MVP. "Weve seen the effort that it takes to get to this point, and, obviously, well try to replicate that and do it again," Smith said. "Were looking forward to the next challenges and guys having a target on their back and people trying to come after us." Smith became the third linebacker to earn Super Bowl MVP honours, thanks to a 69-yard touchdown return off an interception of regular-season MVP Manning in the first half and a fumble recovery in the second half. He said that during the game, some of his teammates were telling him, "You might be the MVP." "And I was like, No way. No way. Not me." Carroll said general manager John Schneider hhas positioned the Seahawks to be able to avoid the problems that can make it hard to repeat as NFL champions.dddddddddddd Since Denver repeated in the 1999 game, only one team has won two Super Bowls in a row, the New England Patriots in 2004-05. Theres the need to replace players who leave via free agency. The need to pay other players with new, better-paying contracts. "John Schneider has done an extraordinary job of structuring this roster contractually, and with the vision of looking ahead, so that we can keep our guys together," Carroll said. "One of the things that happens every so often is teams have a big fallout after they win the Super Bowl. Were not in that situation." Carroll was reminded during Sundays game of some of his blowout victories in college football bowl games when he was a championship-winning coach at Southern California. "It felt like it. It looked like it. The score was like it," he said Monday. "I really cant tell you exactly what it is, but somethings going on, because I sat back there at the end of the first quarter and said, Shoot, here it goes," he said. "Bang, bang, bang, bang, and its 22-0 at halftime." Carroll described the lopsided nature of the game as "kind of like an avalanche," an interesting choice of words given the hubbub last week -- and, really, for months before that -- over whether the first outdoor Super Bowl at a cold-weather site would be affected by snow. Instead, the weather wasnt a factor Sunday at the stadium in East Rutherford, N.J., where the temperature was 49 degrees at kickoff and only some light rain fell. On Monday morning, meanwhile, driving snow hit the area and forecasts called for up to 8 inches. "I dont know how (NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell) pulled it off, but he pulled off the weather in perfect fashion," Carroll joked. "The NFL is powerful." ' ' '
FLORHAM PARK, N.J. - The New York Jets have agreed to terms with former Seattle Seahawks right tackle Breno Giacomini, quickly finding a replacement for Austin Howard. The Jets also re-signed backup defensive lineman Leger Douzable to a one-year deal Wednesday. Giacomini missed seven games with a knee injury last season for Seattle, but was back in time for the Seahawks run to their Super Bowl title against Denver. The 6-foot-7, 318-pound Giacomini will replace Howard, who signed with Oakland as a free agent after starting every game the last two seasons. Giacomini was a fifth-round pick in 2008 of Green Bay, where he spent three seasons before spending the last three with Seattle. Somehow, moves not made before the window closed ended up dwarfing the moves that were consummated. Gareth Bales big money transfer to Real Madrid was a headline maker, but with the move inevitable weeks prior, the hysteria was muted to a degree. Mesut Ozils last minute shock move to Arsenal created a stir, but the Gunners title credentials are very much still up in the air, even with Ozil. The biggest headlines Monday came out of Old Trafford. The failure of Manchester United to make a significant splash (not named Marouane Fellaini), despite the need for strengthening and the financial wherewithal to do so, left an early stain on the immediate post-Ferguson era and raised questions about what kind of hands the club are now in. It wasnt just about whom they failed to land, but how it went down that drew widespread criticism. Uniteds transfer window dealings has been called farcical and incompetent in the past few days. Use whatever descriptor you like; vice-chairman Ed Woodward and manager David Moyes didnt live up to the lofty standard of their predecessors. In very un-Ferguson/Gill fashion, the duo left important dealings too late in the window, failing to display the confident, composed and controlled demeanor and way of doing business accustomed to the great Manchester United. The failures have been dealt with at length, from imposters, to misunderstanding of Spanish tax law, to not having a clear blueprint how to attract top talent to Old Trafford. The term laughing stock is a bit much. Inadequate fits the bill. To advance the conversation, the more relevant issue now is how United puts the past two months of wavering behind them, while ridding questions pertaining to the standing of the club. To that end, United have nothing to worry about. Yes, Im daring to tell you Manchester United will be just fine. Shocking, isnt it. A club with a history of success, top players, and record earnings will be okay. The negative headlines are temporary. In the immediate world of Twitter and instant analysis and often times sloppy reporting, narratives are built up and torn down at an incredible rate. Uniteds failure Monday and the weeks prior played into the sky is falling narrative. The sky is just fine in Manchester. Rainy, but fine. Lets give it a couple weeks, if United come out on top in the Manchester derby two weeks from now, criticism will be muted. Not of the process, Woodward and Moyes have much to learn, but its the play on the field, the results that matter. It can be suggested Uniteds results over the years covered up inefficiencies. Since the transfer window came to be in 2003, United have spent less than Chelsea, Manchester City, Liverpool, and even Spurs. Yet, United have won four more trophies than its nearest competitor Chelsea, and three more league titles. The purchase of quality and fit, not price tag has been decisive. Fergusons backroom staff grew together, sharing similar vision, getting the most of what theyve had at their disposal. The New York Yankees comparison only holds true, as the Bronx Bombers, despite their spending, are able to cultivate young talent as well. The system of recruitment has been far from perfect (Bebe, anyone?) even under Ferguson. Sir Alex failed to bring in proper centre midfield players to play along side Michael Carrick since he brought Owen Hargreaves to Old Trafford in 2007. Saying you need to strengthening a position is much easier said than finding the right player to fit the plan. Moyes plan is incomplete and it shouldnt surprise, judging by the lack of originality and flexibility in his starting XI through three weeks, Moyes is still figuring out what he has in his squad. In the meantime, hes playing it safe and going for consistency. Not trying to defend the Scotsman, but the learning curve is steep. Hes only been on the job since July 1. The identity will come and suitable players will follow. The bigger concern is the credentials of Woodward to execute in the transfer window. Bean counters should stick to sponsorships, not navigating through the murky waters of dealing with agents and shrewd negotiators on the transfer front. The suggestion United may need a Director of Football post-Ferguson is well warranted. Perhaps the job description at Old Trafford dictates more compartmentalization – something the club was able to get away without under the watchful eye of Fergguson.dddddddddddd United was his baby, now the club is all grown up, and more complex as ever. Woodward should stick to growing the brand. Let football people make football decisions. As for the immediate future, United has as good of a chance to win the title as any of their true Premier League competition and there is no reason to believe another deep run in the Champions League cannot be achieved. This is the same team, plus Fellaini, that ran away with the league a year ago and were an ominous Nani red card away from dispatching Real Madrid in the Champions League. Fellaini is a top pick up for United, no matter how you slice it. He may not have a marquee name like Neymar or Ozil, but hes the type of versatile player in the middle of the park United has desperately needed. Fellaini has size (64 1/2), strength and is entering his prime at 25 years of age. United has often times been bossed in central midfield by the likes of Yaya Toure. Spurs gave all kinds of fits to United last season and have continued to strengthen the position. Fellaini is comfortable in a defensive midfield role, as well as playing well forward off the striker creating fits with his size. Moyes can use Fellaini in various roles depending on the occasion. His 11 goals and six assists a year ago are a testament to his game changing ability. United may have overpaid for Fellaini, they may have not landed a second midfielder and approaches for other top names went for naught. However, this team is still good enough to see out this transitional period while maintaining their high standard. Many speculate Moyes will have to buy in January. Ironically enough, Sir Alex Ferguson always said January wasnt the time to do business, with transfer rates inflated and a lack of value in the market. Before the window re-opens, lets see what Moyes can do. Lets see what Kagawa can do with a run in the team. Lets see Rooney and van Persie continue to grow together. Lets see what Zaha can do, when given a chance. And lets see how Fellaini does on a bigger stage with a team of top talent around him. Its now Moyes turn to makes the headlines, not transfer rumours, dealings, and disappointments. - Everton has been widely credited for their work in the transfer window. The club left it late before bringing in James McCarthy from Wigan, and Gareth Barry and Romelu Lukaku on loan. Perhaps it was intentional, driving up the price for Fellaini at the last minute. Regardless, pressure is now on manager Roberto Martinez. Many pundits have said Martinez is over-rated. I dont agree with that sentiment. Everton hasnt been entirely unimpressive through three draws in three matches. Much of it comes down to a lack of goal scoring, and the hope is Lukaku proves a vast improvement over the misfiring Nikica Jelavic. - Got to hand it to Liverpool – a perfect record through three matches is the teams best start in nearly 20 years. And on top of that, they have yet to concede a goal. The play of Daniel Sturridge has been the highlight, and Coutinho has had his moments. But other than those, the team has been efficient, yet not spectacular. - Thats a testament to the tactics of Brendan Rodgers and the commitment to team shape and approach. Most noticeably, Steven Gerrard has taken up a much deeper, holding role in the midfield. Gerrard is basically sitting on top of the back four, maintaining the shape defensively and quarterbacking the attack. Hes no longer the influential player getting up in the attack. Gerrards new role suits the team better. The loan move for Victor Moses could prove to be a shrewd piece of business, filling a need. - Match-day three top performers: Nathan Redmond (Norwich City), Hatem Ben Arfa (Newcastle), Jason Puncheon (Crystal Palace), David Marshall (Cardiff City), Aaron Ramsey (Arsenal) - Worst performance: Fulham, entire squad - If they only had a proper striker: West Ham - Under the radar transfer moves to watch: Peter Odemwingie to Cardiff City, Barry Bannan to Crystal Palace, James McCarthy to Everton - Good Game, Good Effort of the Week: Hull City. Should have, could have been up on Manchester City at the Etihad. If you dont bury your chances … a tough way to learn life in the Premier League is about decisiveness and taking advantage of chances. The Tigers lost 2-0. (SportsNetwork.com) - The St. Louis Blues aim to extend a 10-game point streak and grab a share of first place in the Central Division on Sunday afternoon as they visit the Washington Capitals. The Blues picked up a fourth win in a row on Friday, posting a 3-2 shootout win over the Carolina Hurricanes. Defenseman Kevin Shattenkirk had the winner in the tiebreaker, scoring as St. Louis second shooter before Jake Allen sealed things with a stop on Eric Staals wrister. Allen made 26 saves, while David Backes and Ryan Reaves scored early to help the Blues improve to 9-0-1 in their last 10 games. This was a big game to win, said St. Louis head coach Ken Hitchcock. We played back-to-back, and our record was only two games over .500 on the road. To start off the second half of the season with a big road win is important, so they deserve a lot of credit. Backes goal extended his point streak to nine straight games and he has totaled eight goals and 16 points over the run. St. Louis is second in the Central Division with 66 points, two ahead of Chicago and a pair of points back of Nashville, which visits Pittsburgh on Saturday. Brian Elliott, who leads the NHL with a 1.95 goals against average, will start today for the Blues and is 5-2-0 lifetime versus the Capitals with a 3.19 GAA and .881 save percentage in nine games (8 starts). The Capitals are in action for a second straight afternoon, having lost a 1-0 overtime decision to the Montreal Canadiens on Saturday. Braden Holtby, coming off a shutout win over Pittsburgh, made 29 saves, but gave up the only goal of the game with Montreals Max Pacioretty chipped home a pass with 1:52 left in overtime. Were happy with the way we played against a very good team, Holtby said. There were some big performances on both sides. Alex Ovechkin, tied for the league lead with 29 goals, had a big performance despite not scoring. He logged just over 25 minutes of ice time and had eight shots on net along with five hits. However, Washington still fell to 1-3-2 in its last six games and is tied for third in the Metropolitan Division with the New York Rangers. Holtby made his 42nd start of the season, tied for second most in the NHL, and it is unknown if hell get the call again today. He has won both of his previous starts versus the Blues, giving up only two goals on 76 shots. Backup Justin Peters, meanwhile, is 0-2-0 versus St. Louis while giving up seven goals on 65 shots for a 3.50 GAA and .892 save percentage. The Capitals have won four of their past six versus the Blues overall and four of the last five meetings at home, but St. Louis did notch a 4-1 victory as the hosting club on Nov. 15. Elliott made 24 saves and Backes was one of four goal-scorers for the Blues, while Peters made 30 saves. Chris Heisey scored from first base on Fraziers 10th-inning double into the left-field corner, and the Cincinnati Reds rallied to beat the Milwaukee Brewers 4-3 Sunday. Fraziers soft line drive resulted in an inning-ending double play in sixth, when the Reds had loaded the bases against Kyle Lohse. "Fortunately, I got another chance," Frazier said. "The best thing about baseball is you get another chance tomorrow. This time, I only wanted three innings." Heisey drew a two-out, four-pitch walk from Tyler Thornburgh (3-1), and Frazier followed with a line drive that one-hopped the wall. Heisey beat shortstop Jean Seguras off-target relay to the plate to give the Reds three wins in their four-game series against the team with the majors best record at 21-11. "Heisey grinded out a walk and then had to bust it," Cincinnati manager Bryan Price said. "They played the ball perfectly." Third base coach Steve Smith had been criticized by some for having runners thrown out at home several times this season. "Im not known for my eagle eye at the plate. The key is not to get caught up in the moment and swing at bad pitches" said Heisey, who was inserted into the starting lineup when Jay Bruce was scratched with a sore left knee. "Any time the ball is down the line or in the gap, Im thinking of scoring." Brandon Phillips greeted reliever Brandon Kintzler with a tying 425-foot homer to centre with one out in the eighth, Phillips second homer this season and first since April 5. Sam LeCure (1-1) pitched the 10th for the win. Lohse allowed a season-high eight hits, including Brayan Penas home run. Lohse lasted 6 1-3 innings, giving up two runs with one walk and two strikeouts. "It was a weird outing for me," Lohse said.dddddddddddd"They did a good job mixing it up. Scooter Gennett hit Simons third pitch of the game 357 feet into the right-field seats for his second homer of this season. The Brewers made it 2-0 in the third on Jonathan Lucroys two-out, RBI single. Pena hit the first pitch of the third inning 456 feet over the right-field wall for his third homer of the season, all in the last five days. He left for a pinch runner with a tight hamstring in the seventh. Khris Davis restored the two-run lead with a solo homer in the fourth. Cincinnati again made it a one-run game in the bottom half on Fraziers sacrifice fly after Phillips led off with a double -- his fourth hit in five at-bats since getting Friday off. Milwaukee had been 4-0 in extra-inning games and 4-0 in one-run games. "We need to send a message that were in this thing and we have to prove it to ourselves," Price said after the Reds improved to 15-16. "Being around .500 isnt what were all about." RIFUGIO PANAROTTA, Italy -- Julian Arredondo claimed the biggest win of his career with a solo victory on the 18th stage of the Giro dItalia on Thursday, while Nairo Quintana retained the overall leaders pink jersey as the race returned to the mountains. The 25-year-old Arredondo had been part of a breakaway and made his move with just under four kilometres (2.5 miles) remaining to ride alone up the summit finish to Rifugio Panarotta. The Colombian had time to raise one arm into the air as he crossed the finish line, 17 seconds ahead of Fabio Duarte. Philip Deignan was 20 seconds further back at the end of the 171K (106-mile) leg from Belluno. "Its a win that Ive really searched for," Arredondo said. "I said it from the start, Im in this Giro to win at least one stage, and its from the start that I have been trying. "Until today, I managed three second places and two third places, I was only missing a win and we got that today. Weve tried so much and at the end we managed it. So tonight well celebrate." Quintana remained 1:41 ahead of fellow Colombian Rigoberto Uran, with Pierre Rolland moving into third place as former race leader Cadel Evans slipped to ninth. Rolland is 3:29 behind Quintana, two seconds ahead of Fabio Aru and Rafal Majka. "Today was a calm climb, but there were several attacks, I managed to control all of them which concerned my position," Quintana said. "Each cyclist should worry about their own race. The team worked very well. "I am very happy with how things are going, there is a good atmosphere, there is joy in the team. Also the Italians are cheering me on, they are supporting me during the race, I am very happy with the warmth that we are feeling on the Giro route." Victorias Ryder Hesjedal, the 2012 Giro champion, moved up two spots to seventh overall after finishing 16th in Thursdays stage. He is 4:32 behind Quintana. Svein Tuft of Langley, B.C., is in 155th spot after finishing 142nd in Thursdays stage. A group of 11 cyclists escaped on the first categorized climb of the day, up San Pellegrino, and they managed to open up an advantage of 1:50 on the approach to the steepest part of the climb, which had gradients of 15 per cent. Arredondo, who currently leads the King of the Mountains standings, attacked three kilometres (two miles) from the summit to pick up maximum points. Deignan was just behind Arredondo, with Cataldo 40 seconds slower, but the breakaway was back together on the descent and three more riders joined it from the peloton. The peloton hit the top of San Pellegrino four minutes behind Arredondo and the gap grew to twice that, with the favourites opting to conserve their energy. The leaders maintained a significant advantage on the second climb -- the Passo del Redebus -- and had a 7:27 gap on the final climb of the day. Thomas De Gendt attacked at the foot of the ascent, with 16 kilometres (10 miles) remaining, but the Belgian was caught and passed by Arredondo, Duarte and Deignan with six kilometres (3.7 miles) to go. Back in the overall contenders group, Rolland made his move with just over two kilometres (1.24 mile) remaining to move into a podium position, while Aru also gained time on Quintana with a final surge to the line. The seven-time champion Crusaders led 12-9 at halftime, all penalties, and the Rebels scored their only try with two minutes remaining through flanker Scott Fuglistaller, giving them a bonus point for losing by fewer than seven points. After starting with two losses, the Crusaders have won two straight heading into a bye next weekend. Taylor, playing outside recalled flyhalf Colin Slade, kicked the Crusaders to their halftime lead while fullback Jason Woodward provided all of the Rebels points. The first try of the match came in the 56th minute with the Rebels, with one win and two losses on the season, trying to hold out waves of attack before they were caught short when Kieran Read gave Funnell a free run into the right corner. The conversion and another penalty from Taylor pushed the lead to 13 points. Fuglistaller crossed late after the forwards mauled the ball. Bryce Hegarty added the conversion to ensure the bonus point. The Rebels, beaten 32-7 by the Western Force in the previous round, reinstated the lineup which easily defeated the Cheetahs in their season-opener and weree stronger defensively as they tried for a fifth consecutive win at home.dddddddddddd But persistent infringing, particularly at the scrum, enabled the Crusaders to take the lead from Taylors boot. Melbourne skipper Scott Higginbotham was frustrated with the penalty count. "We pride ourselves on our defence and how tough we are at the breakdown, and it was disappointing to give away that many penalties," Higginbotham said. Crusaders coach Todd Blackadder described the match as "ugly." "Off the back of not having a potent attack tonight, we defended with our hearts and it probably made the difference in the end," Blackadder said. "We can go into the bye in pretty good nick and we need to put a lot of work into our attack. There are a few things we can do which will certainly improve our game." Rebels coach Tony McGahan said the Crusaders experience proved to be the difference. "They were just a bit cuter than us in certain aspects and they controlled things really well," McGahan said. "We kept coming back and they kept slipping away." ------ Scores: Crusaders 25 (Ben Funnell try; Tom Taylor conversion, 6 penalties), Melbourne 19 (Scott Fuglistaller try; Bryce Hegarty conversion penalty, Jason Woodward 3 penalties).
