Jermain Defoe says surpassing former Liverpool striker Robbie Fowlers goalscoring record would be special. Defoe, 34, scored his seventh league goal of the season in Sunderlands 3-0 win over Hull City on Saturday, moving him onto 150 top-flights goals - now needing just 13 to move above Fowler on the all-time Premier League list.Former Tottenham Hotspur striker Defoe managed 15 league goals last season, but admits he has eyes on Fowlers landmark already, with Sunderland set to play Liverpool on Saturday. It would be nice, Defoe told Sky Sports News HQ. Someone like Robbie Fowler, in my opinion one of the most natural finishers that this country has produced. I remember his goals, nice clean finisher, not much backlift. Fowler scored 162 Premier League goals If I can go above him it would be special. Its a long way to go but Ill just take them as they come. I always believe that each game I play Ill get a chance or half-chance and its just down to me to take it.Defoes time in the Premier League looked to be coming to an end when he moved to Toronto FC in 2014 on a four-year deal, but the forward returned to Spurs briefly on loan before joining Sunderland in 2015. SONOMA, Calif. -- Jamie McMurray took the time to help rookie teammate Kyle Larson learn the road course at Sonoma Raceway. The payoff for working together was two Chip Ganassi Racing cars in the top three of the starting field of Sundays race. McMurray won the pole for Sundays race with a track record lap that bumped AJ Allmendinger from the top starting spot, and Larson qualified a surprising third. Allmendinger seemed to have the pole locked down until McMurray turned a lap at 96.350 mph in the final minute of Saturdays qualifying session. It broke the record of 95.262 mph set by Marcos Ambrose in 2012. "Great lap, I am so excited," McMurray said. "I thought our car in race trim was really good, really good on the long runs. Were not going to change a whole lot, I feel really good about it." Its the first pole of the season for McMurray, 10th of his career, and third at Sonoma. McMurray also started from the pole last year but finished 25th. He called the qualifying session stressful under NASCARs new knockout format. McMurray was on the verge of being eliminated in the first of the two rounds, but he went out for one last lap to advance into the top 12. Then he bumped Allmendinger as the clock wound down on the final 10-minute session. "I think everybody in the garage area has been stressed out about trying to get that clean lap in qualifying all weekend long," McMurray said. "This knockout qualifying is just an emotional roller-coaster. Theres a lot of highs and lows with it." Allmendinger wound up second in a race he believes he can win. He was out of the Sprint Cup Series a year ago because of a failed random NASCAR drug test in 2012, so while the series was racing at Sonoma, Allmendinger was in the Nationwide Series race at Road America. He delivered in the Wisconsin race for his first career victory and found his way back into a full-time ride in Cup. He wasnt disappointed after McMurray bumped him from the pole, but it eyeing another win. "We were in position to have (the pole), so it could be a lot worse," Allmendinger said. "It sucks when you are that close, but you know whatt? Jamie put in a heck of a lap.dddddddddddd Weve got a clean view of the track when we go green and were going to have some fun tomorrow. Weve got a pretty good shot to win this thing." In a surprise, McMurrays rookie teammate Kyle Larson was third to give Chip Ganassi Racing two cars in the top three. Larson doesnt have a ton of road course experience, and the rookie is admittedly still learning how to shift. Larson, who replaced road course specialist Juan Pablo Montoya in the Ganassi entry, seemed surprised by his run. "It would be interesting to see what Juan could have done today in my car because I dont feel Im that good on road courses," Larson said. "Ive never raced here before. I really rely on McMurray -- I sat in the lounge with him for 15 or 20 minutes and he just went through every corner with me and tried to give me as much information as I needed. Carl Edwards was fourth and followed by Kurt Busch, Kevin Harvick and Ryan Newman. The rest of the top 12 included Brian Vickers, Paul Menard, Joey Logano, Danica Patrick and Casey Mears. Patrick has now advanced into the final round of qualifying five times this season. "We would have liked it to be better, but well take it," Patrick said. Hendrick Motorsports goes into Sundays race looking to extend its five-race winning streak, but its drivers will have to come from deep in the field to make it six straight. Jeff Gordon, the all-time winner at Sonoma with five victories, was the highest-qualifying Hendrick driver at 15th. "We pride ourselves on being good on the road courses, especially here at Sonoma," Gordon said. "Obviously we will talk to our teammates, and see what they were dealing with as well. Very disappointed to not have any Hendrick cars in the top-12." Jimmie Johnson, winner of three of the last four races, qualified 22nd. Its his lowest starting spot at Sonoma since 2007. Failing to advance in the final group of 12 in qualifying were road course favourites Tony Stewart, the only Stewart-Haas Racing driver not to make it into the final group, as well as Ambrose and defending race winner Martin Truex Jr. ' ' '
TORONTO – Shootouts have proven a nemesis for Jonathan Bernier. But with a few adjustments on Friday evening, the 25-year-old managed to secure his team an extra point, stopping all three Buffalo shooters in a 4-3 triumph at the ACC. "I just changed a few things and felt more comfortable in net," Bernier said after the win, the Leafs fourth straight to end in a shootout. History hasnt been kind to the emerging, young netminder in the skills portion of extra time. Bernier entered the night with eight losses in 11 career shootouts – two of his three victories coming this season – his .500 save percentage amongst the worst of any active goaltender. In the final two games before the three-day Christmas break – both shootout losses – he failed to stop any of the four shots he faced from the Red Wings and Rangers. He was particularly sour with the result after a 2-1 defeat at Madison Square Garden on Monday night, one that saw him backstop the Leafs with an impressive 42 saves. He found a flaw though, with the help of video, and put it to work against the Sabres. "I think I was backing too quick the last two I did and thats the adjustment I made," said Bernier, who stopped 32 of 35 shots in regulation and overtime. "They were seeing too much net. I feel Im agile enough to get there and thats where I wanted to get the angle right and take away the net behind me." Luck was also on his side. Tyler Ennis hit a bar on the Sabres second attempt while Zemgus Girgensons failed to tuck the puck across the goal-line after beating Bernier with a clever move. Still, it was victory all the same and one the Leafs needed after two defeats to the cellar-dwelling Sabres earlier this season. Bernier improved to 3-4 in shootouts this season and now boasts a .543 career mark. Five Points 1. Unpredictable Coming off a three-day break for the Christmas holidays, Randy Carlyle wondered aloud on Friday morning what type of team might show up against the Sabres. "These games are different games Im going to tell you," he said, citing the now CBA-mandated three days off the ice with only a morning skate to speak of. "You never know what youre going to get." Unpredictable and inconsistent as they have been all year, the Leafs were under siege for most of the opening period. Buffalo scored twice in a span of 53 seconds and outshot Toronto 15-4 over the final 16 minutes of the first frame. "We self-inflicted a lot of things that happened to us in the first period," said Carlyle, highlighting an offensive zone turnover from Joffrey Lupul on Buffalos second goal. "We seemed to be trying to be too cute and played fancy and obviously that wasnt really what we needed to do. We needed to put the puck in and find ways to get through the neutral ice and establish more of a grind game and offensive zone time and we were able to do that in the second period. We were like two different hockey clubs." The Sabres 2-0 lead was quickly vanquished. Jake Gardiner, Peter Holland and Phil Kessel all scored in a dominant second frame, one that saw the Leafs outshoot their Atlantic division rival 17-5 while playing with the punishing down-low game they have been searching for all season. "We said theres nothing we can do about the first – it was done," Dion Phaneuf said afterward. "We felt that we could play better and we went out and we did that. It was a really big second period for our team." The lead nearly survived regulation. But with Phaneuf whistled for hooking in the final minute of regulation, Steve Ott managed to knot the score at three, eventually pushing the Leafs to their fourth straight shootout. "The positive is that we found a way to regroup and get ourselves back on track," said Carlyle. "But we have to play 60 minutes like we played the last two periods – as close to that as we possibly can." 2. Disdain for Shootouts Carlyle made no secret of his disdain for shootouts prior to the game. "My personal opinion on shootouts is they can take them and they can take it someplace else," he said with a hearty laugh. "Id rather see us go to overtime, go to three-on-three, two-on-two to find a winner. I look at it differently than obviously the people that have it in place." The Leafs, now 6-4 in shootouts, have won six games since Nov. 19, four of them coming in the shootout. 3. Offence from the Defence A source of some concern in the opening two months of the season, the Leaf offence is finally getting a boost from the back-end. Gardiners second goal this season gave the Leafs six goals from the defence corps in the past 11 games compared with a scant three in the first 29 games. Phaneuf leads the group with three goals this season, Franson pacing the way with 20 points, including a pair of assists on Friday. 4. Necessary Adjustments Paul Ranger played in each of the Leafs first 22 games this season, but over the course of the past month he has bounced in and out of the Toronto lineup. Carlyle said he the rust element for Ranger, following a four-year NHL absence, but "were in the business to win hockey games". Among the adjustments being asked of the 6-foot-3, 210 pound defender is a more consistent physical dimension. "I think Paul Ranger is a big, hulking man that has got much power as any player that Ive saw – hes that strong," said Carlyle of the 29-year-old. "He does things that normal people cant do as far as power. And Id like to see him use that power element on the defensive side of it..." What the Leafs would like specifically is for Ranger to assert himself with a physical edge in the defensive zone, eliminate the opposition with the size and strength hes accumulated since he last played in the league in 2008. "He has that kind of power and strength," Carlyle said. "We think thats the quickest for him to get back to the confidence level that he played at before. We need him to do that for our hockey team." Ranger was not that type of defenceman when he played in Tampa for five seasons. "He was an offensive guy," Carlyle said of Ranger, who posted a career-high of 10 goals and 31 points in 2007-08. "He was asked to join the rush all the time. And we dont think that that suits his model right now for him to get back to where he was." "I think playing consistently," said Ranger of needed improvements during a conversation with the Leaf Report. "Just reliable and consistent. And then be able to play my game a little bit more. I guess relax a little bit out there and just play my game like I know I can." 5. Christmas Break Reset The Leafs were hopeful that the recent three-day break would offer an opportunity to recharge the batteries with a furious January ahead. "You kind of hit the reset button and get away for a little bit," said Franson. "I think thats big for a lot of us right now, just having gone through what we went through the last little while here and trying to find our identity a bit. The breaks big for that, to be able to step away from the game for a couple days and be with some family and think about other things than hockey." Stats-Pack 4-8 – Career record for Jonathan Bernier in the shootout. 1 – Regulation victory for the Leafs in the past 19 games. 8 – Points for Peter Holland in the past 10 games, including his sixth goal this season against the Sabres. 6 – Goals from the Toronto defence in the past 11 games. 3 – Goals from the Toronto defence in the first 29 games. 2 – Points from Phil Kessel on Friday, his first multi-point outing since Dec. 7, a nine-game stretch. 5-6-2 – Leafs record in December. CHARLOTTE, N.C. - For a while Sunday, it seemed as though picking up a first down — let alone scoring a touchdown — was a monumental chore for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.Such has been the case this season for Lovie Smiths team. The Bucs failed to break the 17-point barrier for the 11th time this season, Josh McCown had three turnovers and the Bucs lost for the ninth time in the past 10 games 19-17 to Carolina. It feels like we have run the ball and thrown the ball effectively at times, but weve got to be able to do it on the same day — and weve just not done that, McCown said.On Sunday, Smith said, The passing game could never get totally into sync with it.McCown was limited to 154 yards passing. He fumbled twice on sacks and was intercepted on a last-second heave backed up near his own end zone. The Bucs offence was completely ineffective in the third quarter, limited to minus-2 yards on their first four possessions of the third quarter. A sack-fumble by McCown at his own 4 led to Carolinas go-ahead touchdown. That was really what I think tilted the game was the third quarter — that slow start, McCown said. That, and turnovers. The Bucs (2-12) turned it over three times — all in the second half. But Smith refused to pin the teams problems on his veteran quarterback. Were always talking about securing the ball and you want the quarterback to do that, Smith said. But its on a lot more than the quarterback when he gets sacked.Meanwhile, the Panthers are not giving up on the possibility of winning the NFC South with a losing record.Derek Anderson threw for 277 yards and a touchdown, Graham Gano kicked four field goals and the Panthers stayed alive in the NFC South playoff race. The win, coupled with Atlantas loss to Pittsburgh, left the Panthers (5-8-1) ahead of New Orleans in the division by percentage points. The Saints (5-8) play the Chicago Bears on Monday night. If the Panthers win the division, they will be only the second NFL team to do so with a losing record in a non-strike-shortened season. The 2010 Seattle Seahawks were the other team to accomplish that feat. Its pretty crazy, Panthers tight end Greg Olsen said. But were not going to apologize for it.Anderson completed 25 of 40 passes and improved to 2-0 as a starter in place of Cam Newton, who missed the game while recovering from a car accident Tuesday that left him with two fractures in his lower back.Olsen tied a career high with 10 catches for 110 yards, and rookie Kelvin Benjamin had eight grabs for 104 yards. The Panthers reached or started in Tampa Bay territory on every drive, but managed just one touchdown and settled for five field-goal attempts. They came in ranked 27th in red zone offence. The game turned on the opening drive of the second half when Carolina defensive ends Charles Johnson and Mario Addison converged to sack McCown at the Tampa Bay 4, jarring the ball loose. Kawann Short recovered, setting up a 2-yard touchdown pass from Anderson to Jerricho Cotchery to give Carolina a 16-10 lead they would never relinquish. The Panthers had plenty of chances to build on that lead in the third quarter, but struggled to do so.Jonathan Stewart fumbled at the Tampa Bay 3 on Carolinas next possession and Akeem Spence recovered, keeping it a one-possession game. Not this season. And certainly not during most of Friday nights game against Louisville. But once again, late in the game with everything on the line, they figured things out just in time. Aaron Harrison hit a 3-pointer for the go-ahead score with 39 seconds left and Julius Randle made a pair of clutch free throws to lift the fantastic freshmen of Kentucky to a 74-69 victory over their in-state rivals. The eighth-seeded Wildcats (27-10) led for a grand total of 65 seconds in this Midwest Regional semifinal. Theyll play Michigan on Sunday for a trip to the Final Four. "I told them before the game, youll get punched in the mouth and youre going to taste blood," coach John Calipari said. "You can fight or you can brace yourself for the next shot. They fought." Fourth-seeded and defending champion Louisville ends its season at 31-7. Few expected a run this deep for the Wildcats as this season played out and their five freshmen starters struggled to play a team game. But theyve been learning slowly. They trailed by 13 midway through the first half, then by seven with 4 1/2 minutes left. Suddenly, things kicked in. Actually, it was a sophomore, Alex Poythress, who scored five points and blocked a Russ Smith layup attempt during a 7-0 run that tied the game at 66 with 2:11 left. "Alex Poythress won the game for us," Calipari said. "We were begging him the whole game to start playing, and he played at the right time." From there, it was the Kentucky freshmen -- the Kiddie Cats -- who showed all the poise against the defending national champs, who were led by seniors Smith (23 points) and Luke Hancock (19). Harrison took a pass from Julius Randle and spotted up in the corner for the go-ahead shot. Both finished with 15 points, as did yet another freshman starter, Dakari Johnson. On the next possession, Louisvilles Wayne Blackshear got fouled. The 71 per cent career free throw shooter missed the first. Randle came down and made two free throws to put Kentucky ahead by three. Harrison guarded Smith and forced him to miss a tough 3-pointer on the next possession -- "His first stop of the game," Calipari quipped. A few seconds later, the Wildcats were chest bumping and Calipari wass pumping his fists to a loud stadium that was about two-thirds Kentucky blue, one-third Cardinals red.dddddddddddd Kentucky has now knocked off previously undefeated Wichita State, defending national champion Louisville and has a meeting with last years runner-up, Michigan, coming next. Earlier, the Wolverines beat Tennessee 73-71. The latest win for Kentucky was the ultimate lesson in patience for a team that, for so long, had trouble showing any. They were touted on T-shirts as the team that would go 40-0 and win the national title, then all head off to the NBA. Two out of three is still possible. "They finally have surrendered and lost themselves in the team," Calipari said. "Its just taken a long time." Louisville coach Rick Pitino, who fell to 11-1 in Sweet 16 games, produced a matchup zone that the Wildcats had trouble working through. The Cards took the double-digit lead early, yet went to halftime only up three despite holding Kentucky to 33 per cent from the floor. The difference in Pitinos mind: Louisville went 13 for 23 from the free throw line while Kentucky went 22 for 27. And the Wildcats had a 37-29 rebounding edge, which also led to eight more second-chance points. "I told them we probably beat ourselves a little bit down the stretch," Pitino said. "But how can any of us complain with the run weve been on?" Louisvilles string of Final Fours will end at two and there will be a new national champion. Making this win even more impressive for the Wildcats: They played almost the entire game without Willie Cauley-Stein, an NBA-caliber forward who sprained his left ankle early. "Its not a good ankle injury, let me just put it that way," Calipari said. Another NBA prospect, James Young, fouled out with 5:32 left. That left it to Harrison, his twin brother, Andrew (14 points) and Randle, a lottery pick in waiting who was a monster inside. He had 12 rebounds to go with the 15 points. Hes had a double-double in all three tournament games. Calipari makes no apologies for recruiting the best talent and taking his chances theyll leave before they really set up shop at Kentucky. That strategy helped him bring the eighth national title back home two years ago. Now, Kentucky is a win away from the programs 16th trip to the Final Four. ' ' '
SOUTHAMPTON, England - Premier League leader Chelsea was held to a 1-1 draw by Southampton in the Premier League on Sunday after failing to make the most of a one-man advantage in the closing minutes.Chelsea had to come from behind after Sadio Mane put Southampton ahead in the 17th minute with his second goal in as many games, racing onto a pass from Dusan Tadic and lifting the ball over Thibaut Courtois.Southampton produced an assured first-half display, but switched off defensively moments before halftime and was punished by Chelsea.Eden Hazard collected a pass from Cesc Fabregas and shot across goal and into the far corner, beyond outstretched goalkeeper Fraser Forster.Chelsea took control in the second half but could not break Southampton down, despite midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin being sent off in the 89th for a second booking.Jose Mourinho was left lamenting a decision by referee Anthony Taylor, who booked Fabregas for diving in the area despite replays showing he was tripped by Matt Targett. The referee made a mistake, Mourinho said. He is a very good referee but it is a big mistake. They defended everything. We dominated, we created a lot in the second half especially, we played well.Chelsea still maintained its three-point lead to second-place Manchester City, which surrendered a 2-0 lead against Burnely to draw 2-2. Third-place Manchester United also drew 0-0 at Tottenham to leave the top of the standings unchanged.Southampton remained fourth, but is now ahead of Arsenal only on goal difference ahead of their game on Thursday.Southampton went ahead when Tadic guided the ball beyond John Terry, who had stepped forward attempting to play Mane offside, and the Senegal international sprinted into the space behind and calmly lifted the ball over Courtois.Southampton started without its two first choice full backs in Nathaniel Clyne, missing with a cut knee, and the ineligible Ryan Bertrand, who is on loan at Ronald Koemans team from Chelsea. And Mourinhos side tried to unlock Southamptons makeshift defence with a number of neat interchanges throughout the opening half, but failed to dislodge the back line until stoppage time.Hazard neatly controlled a pass from Fabregas, side-stepped past two defenders on his way into the penalty area and whipped the ball past the outstretched Fraser Forster and into the far corner of the net.Chelsea seized control of the second half and had its penalty claim denied in the 55th.Fabregas was incensed with the decision, but combined again with Hazard on the hour mark as Chelsea relentlessly pushed for a goal to go ahead.Hazard controlled a looping flick into the penalty area from the Spain international, before swiveling and shooting across goal, but his effort rolled past the far post.Mourinho threw on strikers Didier Drogba and Loic Remy in search of a winner that did not come.I am proud of the players, Koeman said. Real beat city rival Atletico Madrid 4-1 after extra time Saturday night in the Champions League final to set off the celebrations, which carried on through the Spanish capital night after the European champions arrived home in the early hours. The celebration started with the teams open-top bus cruising into Cibeles Square, where team captains Iker Casillas and Sergio Ramos draped a club flag around the statue in the centre of the fountain as Real does after every trophy victory. The party continued later Sunday night at the Bernabeu, where a laser show and the chants of thousands of fans honoured Madrids players and coaching staff in a rock concert atmosphere. Coach Carlo Ancelotti led the crowd in singing a celebratory song that was recorded especially for the occasion. Madrid had already recorded the song before ending its obsessive 12-yeaar wait for "La Decima" with Saturdays victory in Lisbon.dddddddddddd. Madrids players were introduced one by one, before Casillas and Ramos hoisted the European Cup high at centre stage as streamers sprayed confetti and Queens "We are the champions" was played over the loudspeaker. "Thanks for waiting," Casillas told the crowd amid chants of his name, before Cristiano Ronaldo took the microphone to lead a chant of "Hala Madrid!" -- a traditional rallying cry for the club. With president Florentino Perez watching on, the team paraded European footballs most prestigious trophy around the Bernabeu in a lap of honour that Ronaldo recorded on his mobile phone as teammate Gareth Bale quietly soaked in the atmosphere. Several players showed off new looks as Luka Modric cut his trademark locks while dark-haired Dani Carvajal bleached his beard blond. Real was also welcomed to city hall in an afternoon ceremony to celebrate the victory in the first final between clubs from the same city. ' ' '
Christian Horner has warned Red Bull are only likely to get stronger over the second half of the season after moving within one point of Ferrari in the battle for second in the Constructors Championship. The former champions have cranked up the pressure on their Italian rivals by outscoring them by 36 points in the last three rounds to move to the brink of overhauling them in the standings.Despite predicting a transitional season following a troubled 2015, Red Bull have already scored more points and podiums than they managed last season, while Max Verstappens win at the Spanish GP is the only non-Mercedes triumph of 2016 so far. And Horner, Red Bulls team principal, admits those results are better than they could have expected before the summer break. Its massive, said Horner. Pre-season we thought wed lucky to be in the top five, so to be fighting Ferrari, one point behind at the half-way point in the season having won a race [is better than expected]. [Sunday] was our sixth podium finish of this season so far and to have both cars finish ahead in their respective battles with Ferrari was a great performance and great first half of the year for us.Were always confident the second half of the season should be stronger than our first half.Although the season still has 10 races to run, Mercedes already appear to be all-but certain to retain their constructors crown with the reigning world champions opening up a 150-point advantage via their one-two finish in Hungary. Natalie Pinkham went along with Daniel Ricciardo for his appearance on Skys A League of Their Own. Horner accepts that, for Red Bull, the next big opportunity for us will be Singapore in September. However, he insists focus on beating Ferrari over the second half of the season will remain strong, despite the spectre of 2017s big aerodynamic overhaul. There are bits [of 2016 development] weve got in the pipeline but a lot of focus is already on 2017, he said. Were also keen to challenge Ferrari and ensure we fight them all the way to Abu Dhabi.Dont miss the F1 Report: Hungarian GP review on Sky Sports F1 at 8.30pm on Wednesday as Marc Priestley and Ben Hunt join Natalie Pinkham in the studio to discuss the fallout from the Budapest race. And, if it was, everyone has gotten enough clues by now to solve it. While no one who has a say in the decision-making process has come right out and said it, it has become very clear that Geno Smith is the starting quarterback and Michael Vick is the backup. Today, tomorrow and next month. And its offensive co-ordinator Marty Mornhinwegs task to make it all work. "Heres my job, this is my responsibility and my duty, really: Ive got to continue to progress the young quarterback thats got 16 games under his belt," Mornhinweg said Wednesday. "That has to happen." Thats why, despite Vicks extensive experience and familiarity with Mornhinwegs offence, Smith is getting the bulk of the work with the starting offence in minicamp and will continue to do so in training camp in late July. "Things can change, as you know," Mornhinweg said. "Theyll start out very similarly. Geno has gotten, and hell get about, lets say 70-75 per cent of the reps with the 1s. Geno, Ill get him a couple reps there with the second group as well." Its not a major revelation, especially after Mornhinweg recently acknowledged that the snaps wouldnt be equal between the two quarterbacks -- confirming Vicks assertion that it wasnt necessarily an "open competition." The two will continue to compete, of course, with Smith getting the chance to end any debate with a solid showing this summer. From what Mornhinweg has seen, he believes that could end up being the case. "Last year about this time ... things were spinning on him a little bit, which was certainly anticipated," Mornhinweg said. "We started our off-season, hes got the bull by the horns (and) hes driving it. Quite different that way. "Very confident, very sure of himself with each play." Last season, Smith threw 12 touchdown passes and 21 interceptions after being thrust into the starting job when Mark Sanchez was lost for the season with a shoulder injury. Cutting down on the turnovers has been the major focus since December. Quarterbacks coach David Lee has worked closely with Smith, who is getting rid of the ball a lot faster than he was at any point a year ago. "Hes thrown a couple of interceptions since OTAs and hadnt thrown any in minicamp," Lee said. "Of course, its not 82,000 (fans) out there and nine million people watching on television. AAnd thats really where youve got to evaluate a quarterback is in those games.dddddddddddd "Thats when you really know how much better hes gotten when you get to the ballgames." But if Smith struggles or is injured, Mornhinweg is counting on Vick -- who thrived under him during their four seasons together in Philadelphia -- to be able to step in seamlessly and lead the offence. "We just have to get Michael Vick playing at the high level that he played at in the past within this system," Mornhinweg said. "So, he needs some reps." Both Smith and Vick are getting used to a revamped wide receiver corps, which has Eric Decker, Jeremy Kerley and a host of others trying to earn roster spots. That might be where the real competition is with the Jets -- not with the guys throwing the football, but the guys catching it. "We are extremely deep at that spot," Mornhinweg said. "So weve got more than a handful of guys that can play at a high level." David Nelson and Jacoby Ford are two veterans vying for spots, while youngsters Greg Salas, Clyde Gates, Michael Campbell and Saalim Hakim and draft picks Jalen Saunders, Shaq Evans and Quincy Enunwa are also in the mix. "Weve got four to five guys total that I know can play at a real high level, that will catch the ball consistently, will separate consistently," Mornhinweg said. "We have three to four guys who can really run. I mean fast, fast. ... Then we have another handful of guys, many of them young players that have shown some things where, this is going to be a heck of a competition here for some roster spots and some playing time and being able to help our football team." Coach Rex Ryan is also intrigued by a promising group of tight ends, including Jeff Cumberland, second-round pick Jace Amaro and the developing Zach Sudfeld. "I could see Marty being real creative with this group," Ryan said. Running back Chris Johnson is expected to be ready to go when training camp opens after recovering from off-season knee surgery. Chris Ivory rolled an ankle Wednesday, but Ryan said it was nothing serious. If healthy, Johnson and Ivory could form one of the leagues most lethal backfield duos. "We need to get Chris Johnson on the field," Mornhinweg said. "He needs some reps, certainly, but it is going to be exciting. At least Im excited." ' ' '

NEW YORK -- Masahiro Tanaka took another positive step toward returning to help the New York Yankees make a run for a playoff berth, facing batters for the first time since he was sidelined six weeks ago with a partially torn right elbow ligament. In front of several dozen reporters and photographers, the Japanese ace threw 35 pitches in a two-inning simulated game Saturday morning and reported no problems with his elbow. His control is expected to come later. "I feel its a little bit still rusty, but there were some good balls that I was able to throw," Tanaka said through a translator. "I want to keep moving forward." Tanaka said he was cautious, thinking about his elbow with each toss, but it didnt prevent him from throwing all of his pitches, including his devastating splitter, while working against teammates Brendan Ryan and Zelous Wheeler. After watching the 25-year-old right-hander from behind the mound, pitching coach Larry Rothschild said he thought Tanaka was on the right track. He felt his arm strength was good --- about the same as it would be during spring training.dddddddddddd "I thought it was a good progression, as long as hes healthy," Rothschild said. The Yankees will wait until Sunday before deciding on the next step. It depends on how Tanakas elbow responds a day later. The young ace got off to a blazing start after signing a $155 million, seven-year contract in January -- New York also paid $20 million to his Japanese team -- going 12-4 with a 2.51 ERA in 18 starts and earning an All-Star nod. But he was placed on the disabled list two days after a rough start July 8. The Yankees have fallen eight games back of Baltimore in the AL East and 3 1/2 games back of the second AL wild card and could use some help for a rotation that has been ravaged by injuries. Manager Joe Girardi said Tanaka will have to make some sort of rehab starts before he could return. "I was pleased. He felt good, and thats the most important thing," Girardi said. "Big thing is well see how he feels tomorrow then well make a decision. ' ' '
ST. LOUIS - Kansas knows all about Stanford now. The Cardinal couldnt deny a slight at a news conference a day earlier fueled them just a bit before pulling their second — and much bigger — upset of the NCAA tournament. Kansas freshmen Andrew Wiggins of Vaughan, Ont., and Wayne Selden Jr. ducked their heads and giggled Saturday when asked about Chasson Randle, Stanfords leading scorer. "We definitely saw that video," Randle said Sunday after the No. 10 seed Cardinal beat the second-seeded Jayhawks 60-57 to advance to the Sweet 16 in the South Regional. "Coach told me not to talk about it but I definitely took it as a challenge. It was a little big extra motivation." Enough for the Cardinal to make the Jayhawks the second No. 2 seed to be knocked out of this tournament in the third round and enough for them to reach the round of 16 for the first time since 2008. Wiggins was held to four points on 1-for-6 shooting in what could have been his final college game. He accepted his share of the responsibility for the loss. "I let a lot of people down," Wiggins said. "If I would have played better, we wouldnt be in this situation, you know? I blame myself for this." Torontos Dwight Powell had 15 points and seven rebounds despite playing with four fouls much of the second half and Randle added 13 points, six steals and four assists for the Cardinal (23-12), who were making their first NCAA appearance since 2008. "To beat a team like this, a storied program with great coaching, great players, always feels amazing," Powell said. "So as of right now were still in the race and were still playing in March, and it feels great." Centre Stefan Nastic, from Thornhill, Ont., had 10 points and four rebounds for the Cardinal. Stanford beat No. 7 seed New Mexico on Friday and will have a higher seed for the first time when it faces 11th-seeded Dayton in the regional semifinal in Memphis, Tenn. The Flyers beat No. 3 Syracuse 55-53. The 6-foot-8 Wiggins, a likely NBA lottery pick if he decides to leave school, was saddled with four turnovers for Kansas (25-10). Wiggins had averaged 28 points the previous four games but the Jayhawks were missing 7-foot freshman Joel Embiid who was sidelined by a stress fracture in his back. Coach Bill Self thought Stanfords height up front bothered Wiggins, but added, "I think he had an off-game, too. Give them credit for that, we put him in position to make some plays." Josh Huestis, who had the primary responsibility for guarding Wiggins, played 39 minutes and had six points, eight rebounds and two blocks. "That was Joshs assignment and he took it to heart," Dawkins said. "He had help. We just tried to make it as difficult as we could for him to score." Self said the game seemed like "a struggle from the opening tip." Everything didnt go right for Stanford, either. The Cardinal were 0 for 9 from 3-point range. "We can make 3s but thats not what we rely on," Dawkins said. "I didnt even notice it because thats not what weve been." Tarik Black had 18 points and six rebounds for the Jayhawks, but he fouled out with 5:25 to go. Conner Frankamp had 12 points on four 3-pointers, the last two in the final 23 seconds to make it close after Stanford had pulled ahead by seven. Stanford was 9 for 12 at the free throw line over the final 2:04 and needed all those points. Frankamps second 3-pointer narrowed the gap to 59-57 with 14.9 seconds left. Anthony Brown hit one of two free throws with 12.9 seconds to go and Frankamp banged a third 3-point attempt off the glass near the buzzer in a bid to tie it. "I knew when that left my hand it was off," Frankamp said. "I didnt get a great look at it." Kansas went to a full-court press down five points with about 11 minutes to play and forced five turnovers the next 6 minutes to tie it Kansas had been 0 for 10 from 3-point range for the tournament, seven of the misses against Eastern Kentucky, before Frankamp connected with 3:34 to go in the half. Frankamp hit another one just before the halftime buzzer off a turnover to put the Jayhawks up 24-22, their first lead of the game. They trailed most of the first half against Eastern Kentucky, too, before pulling away for an 80-69 victory. Powell hit his first shot on a drive after going 0 for 8 against New Mexico on Friday. He had 10 points before drawing his fourth foul early in the second half. Villanova, the No. 2 seed in the East Regional, lost 77-65 to seventh-seeded Connecticut. NCAA Jerseys For Sale . Gordon hit a three-run double in the first inning and Jeremy Guthrie pitched effectively into the sixth inning as the Kansas City Royals beat the Chicago White Sox 7-5 in their home opener Friday. Aoki and Infante were acquired in the off-season to get on base at the top of the order. They each had three hits, and Aoki worked a walk, too. "Thats why we made those additions, guys who can get on base and put the ball in play," Royals manager Ned Yost said. "Nori and Omar were on base seven times, which was big. That set the table for Gordys big double. It was a good offensive day for us." Guthrie allowed four runs on seven hits, four walks and a hit batter in 5 2-3 innings. "It was just windy," Guthrie said. "It was never really cold. The grip is not perfect in conditions like that, but ... were fortunate enough that were moving around every play, so we stay pretty warm." Lorenzo Cain drove in two runs with a two-out fifth inning single that put Kansas City ahead 7-2. The Royals jumped on White Sox rookie right-hander Erik Johnson for six hits and four runs in the first two innings. Johnson retired only 14 of the 28 batters he faced, yielding seven runs on 10 hits, three walks and a hit batter to take the loss. "The biggest thing is that Ive got to compete better for my team," Johnson said. "We were right there. We put five runs on the board after I put them in a hole. "I thought we came up with a couple of big hits," Flowers said. "But Guthrie made some good pitches in situations that could have escalated into bigger innings. We had him on the ropes a couple of times, but missed a couple of hits here or there. We were probably a couple of hits away." The Royals, who had not made a challenge in spring training or in the first two games against the Tigers, asked the umpires to review a call in the seventh when Abreu was called safe at first on a throwing error by third baseman Mike Moustakas that pulled Eric Hosmers foot off the bag. After a two minute, 49 second delay, the call was upheld. "I figured it was a good time to take a shot at it," Yost said. "I thought it would be a 50-50 chance." Greg Holland pitched a 1-2-3 ninth for his first save after setting a Royals record with 47 saves last season. He was 11.6 seconds away from a shutout, but Peter Regin scored after goalie Corey Crawford was pulled. Patrick Kane nearly tied it seconds later, but Talbot stopped him with his pad. New York has won six of seven. Lundqvist is expected to play Saturday in Philadelphia when the Rangers start a back-to-back set. Under Armour Wholesale China . The 11th match-up of the Round of 32 sees Kari Lehtonen and Jonathan Quick square off with a pair of unlikely kick saves. Lehtonen throws just about everything he can at Avalanche forward John Mitchell and manages to get a piece of it, finally, with his foot. Mitchell wheels out from behind the net at what looks to be a yawning cage. Lehtonen, however, sees the reverse move coming and begins his cross-crease sprawl. Never giving up on the potential shot, Lehtonen throws his blocker and his glove in front of the net before finally hurling his left pad at the shot and makiing a mid-air, kick save to deny a sure goal.dddddddddddd. Quicks move is more succinct but just as unlikely. Blake Wheeler hurls a shot on net from a tight angle, but Quick is flat on his stomach with no chance of moving his body in front of the attempt. He decides to try an isolation move. Quick lifts his left leg up in the air behind him yoga-style and manages to get his skate to the puck and deny Wheelers look at the gaping twine. The Winnipeg Jets have signed their 2014 first-round pick Nikolaj Ehlers to a three-year, entry-level contract. The Montreal native was selected as a need player by Baltimore head coach John Harbaugh and will suit up for the Ravens-coached squad Sunday at the University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, Ariz. There are certain things in football you want to do, the 33-year-old said this week in a phone interview. Obviously, the Super Bowl is the ultimate in football and making it as far as possible in the playoffs, thats always No. 1.But the second thing is to get recognized and the best way to get recognized in this league is either with a Pro Bowl invitation or contract. Ive played 10 years so Ive had many contracts and felt like the next thing was to be invited to the Pro Bowl. Its a big deal for me, a big accomplishment in my career. It had a lot of meaning before and has an even bigger meaning now.Ladouceur will be one of seven Cowboys appearing in the Pro Bowl. The New England Patriots and defending champion Seattle Seahawks will square off in Arizona on Feb. 1 in the Super Bowl. The Pro Bowl invitation is a heady accomplishment for a former defensive lineman who joined the Cowboys three games into the 05 season. Ladouceur originally signed with the New Orleans Saints as an undrafted free agent out of the University of California before being released.Ladouceur signed with Dallas after then-head coach Bill Parcells opted to make a change at long snapper. The Cowboys were staying in California between road games against San Francisco and Oakland and gave the former Cal star a look. The six-foot-five, 255-pound Ladouceur hasnt looked back. Hes been with Dallas ever since, having never missed a punt (493 snaps and counting), field goal (214) or convert (302) attempt. In 2013, Dallas rewarded Ladouceur with a five-year contract.L.P., he does a third of my job, it all starts with him and hes been doing it for a long time, Cowboys kicker Dan Bailey said of Ladouceur on the teams website. Im real lucky to have him.dddddddddddd put him up there with some of the best in the league and I have a lot of respect for what he does. He makes my job easier.Ladouceur has also stayed healthy. The Cowboys third-longest tenured player hasnt missed an NFL game during his career while registering 14 special-teams tackles.Dallas finished atop the NFC East with a 12-4 record to secure its first playoff appearance since 09. But it was an eventful return as both of the Cowboys post-season contests (a 24-20 wild-card win over Detroit on Jan. 4 and 26-21 divisional loss to Green Bay on Jan. 11) included controversial officiating calls. In the wild-card game, Dallas linebacker Anthony Hitchens was flagged for pass interference with 8:25 remaining and Detroit facing third-and-one while leading 20-17. But the officials picked up the flag without explanation. The following weekend at Lambeau Field, Dallas trailed 26-21 with 4:42 remaining when quarterback Tony Romo completed a fourth-down pass to Dez Bryant at Green Bays one-yard line. But the play was overruled as Bryant was deemed to not have made a legal catch. Dallas turned the ball over on downs, allowing Green Bay to advance to the NFC championship game against Seattle. On Sunday, the Seahawks rallied from a 19-7 fourth-quarter deficit for a wild 28-22 overtime victory. But Ladouceur wasnt blaming the officials for Dallass loss to Green Bay.Theres so many more other plays we couldve made in that game to change the outcome, he said. Theres still 60-some plays on offence, 60-some plays on defence and 20 some-odd plays on special teams that couldve made a difference. That call, yeah, couldve made a difference but at the end of the day if we wanted to win that game we shouldve won it at a different spot and time in the game.Ladouceur said his Pro Bowl selection has taken some of the sting away from the Green Bay loss.I wish I wouldve played in that game Sunday, Im not going to lie to you, Ladouceur said. We had a really good season . . . I just thought we had a heck of a chance in Green Bay.To have the Pro Bowl at the end of the season kind of makes it a little bit bittersweet but its still a hell of a deal. ' ' '
TORONTO - Masai Ujiri wasted little time in making his first move of the offseason. Just one day after their season came to an abrupt end, the Raptors have reached an agreement on a three-year contract extension with head coach Dwane Casey, sources confirm to TSN.ca Monday evening. In his third year with the team, Casey, 57, helped lead the Raptors to a franchise-record 48-win season en route to a division title and opening-round elimination to the Brooklyn Nets in a seven-game playoff series. Addressing the media after cleaning out their lockers Monday afternoon, Caseys players seemed to be aware of the teams plans to bring him back. "I think hell be back," said Kyle Lowry, an unrestricted free agent. "Simple as that. Matter of fact, Im sure hell be back." Casey was brought in by former Raptors general manager Bryan Colangelo ahead of the 2010-11 season after he had won a championship as an assistant in Dallas the year prior. Right out of the gate, he took a team that had ranked near the bottom of the league in every defensive category, a long-time NBA doormat, and immediately changed the culture. After his third-year option was picked up, Casey had mixed results at the helm of the Raptors in his second season, getting off to a slow start and clashing with Lowry. Instead of discarding Casey for his own coach, Ujiri - the incoming GM - opted to give him a one-year trial, to which he did not disappoint. Both he and Lowry developed a mutual respect, as the point guard turned in a career year, DeMar DeRozan blossomed into an all-star and the team went on to exceed every rationale pre-season expectation. Casey became the fourth coach in franchise history to lead the Raptors to the postseason and his fingerprints can be found on the development of Torontos many young players. "Hes been a great coach," sophomore Terrence Ross said Monday. "Hes helped me with a lot. Hes taught me a lot, especially when it comes to defence. I give him a lot of credit for how I play on the court." "One thing I respect about coach Casey, man, hes been consistent," DeRozan added. "Hes been the same Dwane Casey since hes been here, preached the same thing, told us to stick with the same principles and theyll work. We did it, and everything he said came together like he said it would." "You could go in his office, knock on his door, talk to him whenever, you could text him," he continued. "Hes a players coach. Hes a great dude. Sometimes you dont even look at him like a coach because you could go up to him and talk to Dwane about any situation. I think thats what helped us a lot." Casey ranks third in team history with 105 wins, behind Sam Mitchell and Lenny Wilkens and recently became the first coach to lead the Raptors to multiple seasons holding opponents under 100 points and below 45 per cent from the field. The deal was first reported by the Toronto Star Monday evening. Casey and Ujiri will meet with the media on Tuesday. Watch it live on TSN, TSN.ca and TSN GO at 10:15am et/7:15am pt. Thats when the eight-time champion revealed that a painful back is slowing his serves -- and, all in all, giving him more trouble than his opponents so far.MONTREAL -- It seems that New Jersey Devils veterans Jaromir Jagr and Martin Brodeur still have some good hockey left in their 41-year-old bodies. The future hall of famers stole the show at the Bell Centre on Tuesday night, with Jagr moving into seventh place in all-time goal scoring and Brodeur stopping 29 shots as the Devils downed the Montreal Canadiens 4-1. "We talk to each other a lot about certain things," Brodeur said. "I think we have a lot in common about what our careers brought us. "Its nice to relate to a guy. Its been a while since Ive been able to do that here in New Jersey because we had so many young guys. Its been fun to watch him play. Its pretty impressive what hes accomplished." Jagr tied the game at 17:23 of the first period with his first goal in 11 games and his 14th of the season. But more importantly, it was the 695th of a career that began in 1990 with the Pittsburgh Penguins. That moved him past Mark Messier into seventh place all-time in goals. It came days after he passed former Penguins teammate Mario Lemieux for seventh place in career points with 1,724. Brodeur, making his first start in four games, extended his NHL record for wins to 682, although a Max Pacioretty goal at the 7:00 mark of the first period kept his shutout record at 124. At the end, both were called onto the ice for an ovation from the 21,273 Bell Centre fans as Brodeur was named first star and Jagr got second star. "I didnt expect that in somebody elses building, but theres a little history here for me," said Brodeur, a Montreal native whose father Denis was once the Canadiens team photographer. "Its definitely nice of them to do that." Montreal had a 30-19 shot advantage, but the Devils (20-18-10) scored more than two goals for the first time in six outings and the second time in their last 11. Brodeur and some tenacious third-period checking did the rest as New Jersey stretched its points streak to five games. Canadiens coach Michel Therrien felt his team played with energy, but just couldnt score. "We competed," said Therrien. "We set the tempo, but the story of the game was Marty Brodeur. "He was phenomenal. We were the attacking team. We outshot them, but it was one of those nights when you run into a hot goaltender." Despite their age, neither Brodeur nor Jagr has decidedd on retirement just yet.dddddddddddd. The game was billed as possibly Brodeurs last visit to the Bell Centre, but hes not ready to concede that. "It might be my last one but it might not either," he said. "I just want to play well when I play. "It doesnt matter what situation Im in. Im there to win hockey games and thats it. Ill do that as long as they let me do it." Jagr, who was chosen to play for the Czech Republic at the Sochi Olympics next months, was even more adamant about continuing his career. "Ive said many times, Im not thinking about retiring yet," he said. "Im not counting my games yet, as long as I have fun." Goals early in the second frame from youngsters Eric Gelinas and Adam Henrique were the difference. Dainius Zubrus scored into an empty net, with an assist from Jagr, in the final minute. Brodeur said Paciorettys goal on a long wrist shot that flew past his glove caused him to bear down and try to keep the Devils in the game. "Our team, were kind of goal challenged, so its hard to give up the first goal," he said. "I havent played in a while and I thought this is not good. But I picked it up after that a little bit and we played a really solid hockey game." Montreal (26-16-5) was coming off one of its best games of the season in a 2-1 win over Chicago but could not duplicate that effort. The Canadiens went 0 for 3 with the man advantage, a fifth-straight game with no power-play goals. Pacioretty struck first with his 20th of the season, but Jagr got it back when he got around Josh Gorges and used his long reach to put the puck past Carey Price and in off the far post. Gelinas scored from the point on a power play 1:20 into the second period and Henrique got his sixth goal in the last 10 games from a scramble in the Montreal crease at 4:02. The crowd booed as what appeared to be a Brendan Gallagher goal was disallowed later by video review for inadvertently kicking the puck in late in the second. Notes: David Desharnais sat out with a flu and his spot on Montreals top line was taken by Lars Eller. Francis Bouillon moved in as a seventh defenceman. . . Ryan Clowe picked up two assists and has seven points in his last five games. . . It was the third and last meeting of the season between the teams. Montreal won the series 2-1-0. ' ' '
TSN Hockey Insiders Darren Dreger and Pierre LeBrun have the latest on Jason Spezzas future, the Kings plans for Mike Richards, possible desinations for Vincent Lecavalier, Dan Boyle, Bob Nicholson, and more. Bryan Murray made an announcement after the GMs meetings - and as was reported by Pierre LeBrun a couple of weeks ago - that Jason Spezza wants a trade out of Ottawa. Whats the latest on that? Pierre LeBrun: Yes, he made it public. As you said, we talked about this for a couple of weeks but I think that Murray felt compelled to stop playing around with this. Its not a rumour. Jason Spezza wants out and Murray has taken calls from other teams. Nothing is imminent, and Murray believes that things will heat up around the draft. But in any package for Spezza, he wants a player that helps them now plus some futures - it will be a high asking price. The Stanley Cup Final is on but GMs are already focusing about next season. We expect Brad Richards to be bought out by the New York Rangers - what about Mike Richards by L.A.? Darren Dreger: Well the Los Angeles Kings dont plan on buying out Mike Richards because then they would have to replace him. But Mike Richards doesnt want to be a fourth-line centre next year for the Kings. The Kings are expected to push Richards in the off-season to improve his conditions and get a little bit stronger. But we also know that Richards is a strong and confident young man and he may not want to follow the path that the Kings want him to follow. So this could get very interesting. Is current Philadelphia Flyer Vincent Lecavalier soon to be an ex-Flyer? Dreger: Hes a fourth-line forward making $4.5 million and I cant believe that Ron Hextall is going to want to pay him that. So the word on the street is yes, Lecavalier most definitely is in play. But keep in mind that he has a no-move clause. I know that his agent Ken Hughes has already talked to Hextall about the possibility of moving his client. There are no specific teams yet, theres no list, but if they want to move him they are going to have to go to Vinny and identify a specific place. LeBrun: To the disappointment of many teams, one player who is not on the move is Shea Weber and Im not sure why. For whatever reason, his name pops up all the time as a trade target. David Poile, the GM of the Predators, after the meeting on Wednesday said, "I am never trading Shea Weber." Hes not going anywhere, theyre building their team around him...thats the end of it. Dan Boyles rights are owned right now by the New York Islanders. But could he end up a Toronto Maple Leaf? Dreger: The Toronto Maple Leafs are high on Dan Boyles list. Hes expected to alert Islanders GM Garth Snow at some point this week as to whether or not he intends to negotiate with the Islanders with the possibility of staying there after New York made the trade for his negotiating rights. I know that the Islanders have already made an offer but there is no negotiation. Boyle wants a two-year deal, and the money might be more than the Leafs are willing to pay but they definitely have interest. LeBrun: Speaking of money, the Chicago Blackhawks are going to open the vault again for Patrick Kane and Jonathan Toews. Chicago GM Stan Bowman told us today that he wants them signed by July 1. He has to set up his entire off-season and his cap room by knowing how much these guys will make. Hes optimistic that these deals will get done shortly between now and July 1. Bob Nicholson has left Hockey Canada, but we will find out shortly what his new job is going to be. Dreger: Yes, very soon news will break that Bob Nicholson is jumping into the National Hockey League. He left Hockey Canada and will join the high ranks of an NHL team in a high executive capacity - above the level of president and below that of an NHL owner. But hes joining the NHL. The NHL GMs discussed the draft lottery and possibly changing the odds, but is there no consensus just yet? LeBrun: Well it was sort of a confusing day. We spoke to Tim Murray of the Buffalo Sabres who said he was relieved, because he has three first-round draft picks in 2015 and his understanding is there wont be changes to the lottery before then. But we heard from league sources that its still possible that Bill Daly and commissioner Gary Bettman will make a proposal to the Board of Governors in less than two weeks. So its up in the air at this point. Steve Finley Jersey . 1 overall pick in the draft by the Houston Texans, is recovering from sports hernia surgery. Paul Goldschmidt Jersey . MINNEAPOLIS -- Not even the All-Star break could cool off the Tampa Bay Rays. Ben Zobrist homered and Evan Longoria had three RBIs to lead the Rays to a 6-2 win over the Minnesota Twins on Friday night. Alex Cobb (5-6) allowed two runs in 5 2-3 innings and Matt Joyce added an RBI single as the Rays continue playing themselves back into contention and impressing manager Joe Maddon. "We pretty much picked up where we did leave it off at the All-Star break," Maddon said. "We were crispy, man. That felt good." Trevor Plouffe homered for the Twins, a two-run shot in the third highlighted by a fan leaning over the railing in left-centre and making a great catch. Tampa Bay took a 3-0 lead in the third on Longorias bases-loaded double that soared just beyond the reach of right fielder Oswaldo Arcia. "Thats what really can start to breed confidence," said Longoria, who was hitting just .220 in July before Friday. "It was a good time right there for me to be able to do that and have a renewed slate, so to speak, in the second half." The Twins could have escaped the inning with minimal damage, but a come-backer off the bat of Desmond Jenning ricocheted off the glove of starting pitcher Kyle Gibson (8-8), ruining a possible double play. Zobrist walked and Longoria cleared the bases after Joyce popped out. "If I field my position there in the third inning and get a double play, or if it turns out if I let the ball go, (Brian) Doziers right up in the middle in his shift, its a double play and the defence gets me out of the inning," he said. After Plouffes home run, Zobrist made it 5-2 in the fifth with a two-run homer off Gibson that bounced off the top of the limestone overhang in right field. Both teams need to get off to a hot start in the second half if they want to contend for a playoff spot instead of trade away veterans before the deadline. The Rays had a losing record at the All-Star break for the first time since 2007, but won 11 of 15 heading into the break. Since 2010, Tampa Bay holds the best record in baseball after the All-Star break. Even though it was only a single game in July, Cobb felt it was really important for the Rays to come back after some time off with a win. "It definitely starts that momentum that we need to get going," he said. "Were going in the right direction." With the state silhouette still mowed in the centre-field grass, Minnesota played its first game back at Target Field after hosting the All-Star game on Tuesday. The Twins added Kendrys Morales in early June to bolster their offence and try to remain in contention, but have faltered since. They did win five of their last six before the break and kicked off a 10-game homestand Friday. The Rays called up C Curt Casali from Triple-A Durham and transferred OF Wil Myers from the 15- to the 60-day disabled list. Twins GM Terry Ryan said 1B Joe Mauer is "making steady progress" from an oblique strain, but has not resumed batting activities. ... MARYS, Ont. - Speaking during the media session for the 2014 Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame inductions, former Montreal Expos star Tim Wallach believed early on in his career that the team would contend annually for the World Series. "The 1981 season when we made the playoffs, it was my first full year and such a great time," he said. "As good as we were, I thought that we would be in this position every year. But we never made the playoffs again. You never know, and thats what I tell my players now." Currently a bench coach with the Los Angeles Dodgers, Wallach was one of four Hall of Fame inductees that included former Expos broadcaster of 32 years, Dave Van Horne, former New York Yankees, Expos and Cincinnati Reds general manager, Canadian Murray Cook, and the late Jim Ridley, also a Canadian native that scouted for the Detroit Tigers and Toronto Blue Jays for 29 years. Ridley also coached Team Canada at the 1988 Olympics, the Pan Am Games and the World Junior Championship. A five-time All-Star, three-time Gold Glove Award winner and two-time Silver Slugger Award winner, Wallach was drafted in 1979 by the Expos and played for the team from 1980 to 1992. He remains the franchises all-time leader in games played, hits, doubles, runs batted in and total bases. A California native, Wallach was known as a strong defensive third baseman, often compared to legendary third baseman Brooks Robinson. Following his time in Montreal, Wallach played three more seasons with the Dodgers and one with the Los Angeles Angels, retiring after the 1996 season. "With all of the great players that we had in Montreal, its pretty amazing that I am the all-time leader in all of the categories," he said. "It helped thaat I didnt like to miss games.dddddddddddd Hopefully, someone gets the opportunity to break those records one day." Van Horne was the first English voice of the Expos in 1969 until 2000. A broadcaster with the Miami Marlins since 2001, Van Horne is known for his Up, up and away home run call and for his final call of the July 28, 1991 perfect game pitched by Dennis Martinez by saying El Presidente El Perfecto. "Many years later, I expected that people would be talking about Dennis Martinez and not my final call. It was a wonderful experience that day, much like most of time spent in Montreal," said Van Horne. A native of Sackville, New Brunswick, and current scout with the Tigers, Cook was a general manager with the Expos from 1984 until 1986. "Of the time spent in Montreal, I was most proud of how we acquired players and gave them second chances," said Cook. "We went out and got players like Dennis Martinez and Pascual Perez, who had several productive seasons in Montreal." Represented by his three children, Ridley was key in helping the Blue Jays establish a strong scouting presence in Canada from their inception. "My fathers passion was for teaching and helping players get better," said his son Shane Ridley. "His most proudest accomplishment was coaching Team Canada to a round robin win over Team USA at the 1988 Seoul Olympic Games." The Saturday afternoon induction ceremony is the culmination of the annual three-day celebration of baseball in St. Marys, Ontario, the home of the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum. After winning 11 consecutive games, the Blue Jays dropped their fourth in the last five with a 7-5 loss to the Red Sox on Friday night after erasing a five-run deficit. One night earlier, they lost to Boston 7-4 after falling behind by seven. "What makes it tough is we came back and tied it" on Friday, Blue Jays manager John Gibbons said, "but its never easy playing catch-up and thats what weve had to do." Josh Johnson left after 3 1-3 innings trailing 5-0, but Toronto tied it in the sixth on Edwin Encarnacions 23rd homer of the year, a solo shot. "They chipped away, did a really good job," Johnson said. "I should have still been in the game but I didnt do my job." Toronto charged back into contention in the AL East with that 11-game surge, then went on the road and lost two of three to Tampa Bay before coming to Boston. "We played so good for so long," Gibbons said. "Thats the way the game works sometimes. Youre bound to cool off a little bit." Koji Uehara keeps getting hotter as Bostons new closer. He had his third perfect save in three days. "Im going to tell them that Im not available tomorrow," a laughing Uehara said through a translator. Joel Hanrahan had blown four of his six save opportunities and had a 9.82 ERA before Tommy John elbow surgery ended his season. Andrew Bailey also struggled and blew two consecutive save chances before manager John Farrell turned to his third option, Uehara. "After he went through his throwing program, he said he was good to go" for a third straight day, Farrell said. "So, we were in a save situation, he was going to be the guy." Jonny Gomes put Uehara in that situation when he broke a tie with a bases-loaded, pinch-hit single in the two-run seventh. "Im a grinder," he said. "Im willing to take one off the neck for the team. Youve definitely got to be confident." Gomes hadnt played in five of the previous six games, but is 4 for 12 with two homers and three RBIs as a pinch hitter. He also is hitting .321 with runners in scoring position. The Red Sox had 15 hits, giving them at least 10 for the sixth time in seven games. They have 93 hits over that span. Andrew Miller (1-2) got the win with 1 1-3 scoreless innings. The Red Sox won their fourth in a row and improved to 49-33, the best record in the AL and 3 1/2 games over second-place Baltimore in the AL East. Theyre 16 games over .500 for the first time since they finished the 2011 season at 90-72. Last season, the Red Sox won just 69 games. With the score tied at 5, Shane Victorino and Dustin Pedroia singled in the seventh off Neil Wagner (1-2). Brett Cecil relieved and both runners moved up on a wild pitch before Mike Napoli walked, loading the bases. Gomes, pinch hitting for Daniel Nava, then lined a single past third baseman Maicer Izturis for the go-ahead run. Darren Oliver came in and walked Jarrod Saltalamacchia, forcing in the second run of the inning. Boston had led 5-0 through four innings against Johnson. But Toronto scored four runs in the next two innings and tied it in the seventh. "We battled to come back and tie it and then they dropped two on us again real quick," Gibbons said, "but the bullpen cant be perfect every night." Uehara has been. He struck out two of the three batters he faced in each of the last three games -- one against Colorado and two against Toronto. "Theyve been trying to find that guy ever since Hanrahan went down and then Bailey struggled," Gibbons said. "He seems like the perfect guy for it." The Red Sox went ahead 2-0 in the second on a walk to Napoli, a single by Nava and Stephen Drews sixth triple of the season and third in four games. Napoli singled in a run in the third before the Red Sox scored two in the fourth when Drew started the rally with a one-out double. He left the game with a tight right hamstring and Brandon Snyder pinch ran. Jose Iglesias then singled and both runners scored on a single by Jacoby Ellsbury. After four shutout innings, Red Sox rookie Allen Webster struggled in the fifth when he allowed RBI singles to Jose Bautista and Encarnacion and a sacrifice fly to Adam Lind. Izturis made it 5-4 with a sacrifice fly in the sixth. Notes: Farrell said Drew is day-to-day. ... Ellsbury extended his hitting streak to nine games and increased his AL-high total to 22 hits leading off an inning. ... Toronto SS Jose Reyes singled in the third, his first hit since he returned Wednesday after missing 66 games with a severely sprained left ankle. ... Boston rookie SS Iglesias went 2 for 4 and has 52 hits in 124 at bats. ... Johnson, who came to Toronto from Miami after last season, got his only win with the Blue Jays in his previous start, a 13-5 victory over Baltimore. ... ASHBURN, Va. -- Washington Redskins coach Jay Gruden is optimistic Robert Griffin III will return this season. Gruden said Monday that an MRI shows no broken bones in Griffins injured left ankle. He said the quarterback will be in a cast for a few weeks, and then the team will have an idea when Griffin could return. Gruden said theres no consideration at this point of putting Griffin on season-ending injured reserve. The quarterback dislocated his left ankle the first quarter of the Redskins win Sunday over the Jacksonville Jaguars. The injury is often accompanied by a fracture that requires season-ending surgery. Without the need for surgery, Griffin could perhaps return in about two months. Daniel Norris Jersey . LOS ANGELES, Calif. - The Portland Trail Blazers are hoping theyve put all the bad habits behind them with the playoffs on the horizon. And with a healthy LaMarcus Aldridge providing his usual numbers, they are confident that they can make some noise in the post-season — with or without home-court advantage. Damian Lillard scored 34 points, Aldridge had 31 points and 15 rebounds, and the Blazers beat the Los Angeles Lakers 124-112 Tuesday night. "We had a rough stretch, but now weve kind of picked it back up and were going in the right direction at the perfect time," Lillard said. "Now that were close to the post-season, we want to have that rhythm going into the playoffs — because thats what we play the regular season for." The Blazers fourth straight win, coupled with Houstons loss at Brooklyn, moved Portland within 1 1/2 games of the Rockets for fourth place in the Western Conference and home-court advantage in the opening round of the playoffs. The Rockets have three games in hand. The Blazers have six games left on their schedule, five of them at home. One more win will give them their 12th 50-win season in the franchises 44-year history. But the last four times the team won 50 or more games, they didnt make it past the first round of the post-season. "We dont have a lot of control over that. Right now, its about winning every game and gearing up for the playoffs," coach Terry Stotts said. "Its that mindset thats the most important thing. Whatever happens with the seedings and all that — I mean, we havent even clinched a playoff spot yet." Nick Young, the fifth and last player off the Los Angeles bench, made his first eight shots and finished 15 for 26 with a season-high 40 points. But it wasnt enough to prevent the Lakers 10th defeat in 14 games. They slipped to 25-49 — the most losses by the club since finishing 33-49 in 1993-94. The franchise hasnt lost 50 games in a season since 1974-75 (30-52). "I didnt know I made my first eight shots," Young said. "I just got into a zone. I got into a rhythm kind of fast." Youngs point total was the highest off the bench by any player in the league this season, surpassing the 37 Jamal Crawford had for the Clippers on Jan. 25 at Toronto. Youngs high-point game in the NBA was 43, for the Washington Wizards against Sacramento on Jan. 11, 2011. "Nick Young had a lot of easy shots in the first half," Aldridge said. "Hes a great scorer, so hes going to score. But we did a better job in the second half of making his shots harder." Aldridge, playing his fourth game after missing the previous seven because of a bruised lower back, hit a 13-footer to cap an 18-9 run that extended Portlands two-point halftime margin to 81-70 at the midway mark of the third quarter. Young kept the Lakers within striking distance with his 3-point shooting, draining one with 10:47 left in the game to pull them within 93-86. But Lillard responded with a pair of 3-pointers 28 seconds apart to extend Portlands margin to 13 points, and Los Angeles got no closer than nine the rest of the way. "Coming in, we felt this could be a trap game against a team thats not in the playoff race. But we knew coming in that they were a dangerous team," Lillard said. The Lakers were bolstered by the return of Xavier Henry and two-time MVP Steve Nash, who played in only his 13th game of the season and came off the bench for just the third time in his 18-year career. Nash, who turned 40 on Feb. 7, had 10 points and 10 assists in 22 minutes. The eight-time All-Star has been plagued most of the season by nerve root irritation following his comeback from a broken left leg, which led to issues with his back, hip and hamstrings. NOTES: Lillard became the first player in Trail Blazers history to make 200 3-pointers in a season when he connected with 8:07 left in the first quarter. Wesley Matthews is close behind him with 186. ... The Lakers played before their eighth non-sellout crowd. Before this season, they had sold out every home game since Dec. 6, 2006. ... Portland C Meyers Leonard was ejected after his flagrant 2 foul on Kendall Marshall with 39.9 seconds to play. ... Portland C Robin Lopez had 10 points and 10 rebounds on his 26th birthday. The Tampa Bay Lightning hope to continue its dominance of Philadelphia when the clubs battle Thursday at Amalie Arena. The Flyers earned a controversial 2-1 victory Tuesday against the visiting Los Angeles Kings, picking up a third straight win and their fourth in five games since going winless in the first four tests of 2014-15. Philly will have to solve the Lightning to keep the win streak going, however, as Tampa Bay enters tonights tilt having won 11 of the last 14 encounters in this series. The Bolts have beaten the Flyers four straight times overall and have claimed the last six meetings in Central Florida. Philadelphias last victory in Tampa came in a shootout win on Feb. 15, 2011. Former L.A. forward Brayden Schenn scored the game-winning goal against the Kings with 2:24 remaining in overtime, but the tally only counted after a video review. Schenn skated in all alone from the hosts side of center ice in the neutral zone and shot low, but while Kings netminder Jonathan Quick smothered the shot with his pads, the puck was loose for a second. Schenn made a hard stop in the crease and the force of covering the rebound pushed Quick into the net with the puck presumably over the goal line. The original call did not indicate a goal, but upon a conference of all four officials plus a brief review, the on-ice decision was overruled, giving the hosts their third straight victory. Yeah, its always nice scoring goals and I guess it makes it a little extra special against LA, said Schenn, who arrived in Phillly as part of a June, 2011 deal.ddddddddddddDidnt spend a whole lot of time there but it was a big win for our team and weve got to keep this going. We havent had an easy schedule for the beginning of the year so its another big two points for us. Michael Raffl and Chris VandeVelde also lit the lamp while Jakub Voracek added a pair of assists for the Flyers, who received 38 saves from Ray Emery. Voracek has 13 points on the season, tying him with Tyler Toffoli of the Los Angeles Kings for third in the league rankings, Emery has been in net for all three wins during the Flyers current streak and he has won four straight decisions overall. He expects to get the call over Steve Mason again tonight. Flyers forward Vincent Lecavalier is getting close to returning from a bruised left foot, but the former Lightning captain isnt expected to play against his former team. Tampa Bay has won three of its last four tilts and the Lightning kicked off a four-game homestand Tuesday with a 7-3 rout of the Arizona Coyotes. Nikita Kucherov recorded his first career hat trick to fuel the blowout victory. Brian Boyle added two goals for the Lightning, and Valtteri Filppula and Matthew Carle also lit the lamp. Ben Bishop stopped 22-of-25 shots to record the win. It was a good start for us and we were rewarded, said Boyle. There were some plays that guys made that were pretty impressive, big-time plays from some players. Thats always nice when we finish. The victory pushed Tampas home record this season to 3-1-1. The Flyers are 2-2-0 as the guest. Bishop will get the start for the Bolts. He lost his only career outing against Philadelphia while playing for Ottawa on March 2, 2013. ' ' '

ROME -- Lorenzo Insigne scored two early goals as Napoli edged Fiorentina 3-1 to win the Italian Cup in a final marred by pre-game violence on Saturday. A fan was in serious condition following a shooting on the outskirts of Rome before the match. As a result of the shooting, in which an off-duty police officer was also reportedly injured, the final started 40 minutes late, and there were scenes of violence inside the stadium with a firefighter injured by fireworks thrown from the stands by Napoli supporters. The pre-kickoff tension didnt seem to bother Napoli, however, as Insigne quickly put the southern squad ahead 2-0. Insignes first goal came 11 minutes in with an angled shot that bounced in off the post. He doubled the lead in the 17th by finishing off a counterattack with a shot that deflected in off defender Nenad Tomovic. Peru midfielder Juan Vargas replied for Fiorentina in the 28th with a blast from the edge of the area. The Viola nearly equalized in the 45th but a goal from Alberto Aquilani was annulled for offside. Napoli finished with 10 men when Gokhan Inler picked up his second yellow card for a foul from behind on Josip Ilicic in the 79th. Ilicic had a golden chance to equalize in the 85th but shot wide. Napoli substitute Dries Mertens added another goal in the second minute of added time. "It was a great game," Napoli first-year coach Rafa Benitez said. "It seemed we were in control at the start then they scored but we were able to win with 10 men in the end." It was the fifth Cup for Diego Maradonas former club, with its last coming in 2012. In Serie A, Napoli sits third. One positive note for Fiorentina was the return of Giuseppe Rossi, who came on for the final 18 minutes. It was Rossis first action since January, after his latest knee injury, and boosted his chances of making Italys World Cup squad. In the pre-match violence, several other fans were also reportedly injured, although the circumstances of the shootings were not clear. "I hear that the fan who was shot has been operated on and hopefully is out of danger, so we dedicate this Cup to him," Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis said. Inside the stadium, Napoli captain Marek Hamsik went over to talk with the fans and calm them down before kickoff. There was more chaos at the final whistle when Napoli fans invaded the pitch to celebrate, although they were quickly brought under control to allow the trophy ceremony to go forward. "It certainly wasnt a great scene, what we displayed today alongside football," Italian football federation vice-president Demetrio Albertini said. "For a football lover like me, it was an ugly display." Raptors Jerseys China . Frick Award, presented annually for major contributions to baseball broadcasting. Dick Enbergs unmistakable voice and remarkable enthusiasm for the National Pastime during the Living Room Era as voice of the California Angels from 1968-78 propelled his broadcast career in to the national limelight, as his baseball foundation became a launching pad for other sports and national assignments, said Jeff Idelson, president of the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum. In the years since, his assignments with NBC Sports and now the San Diego Padres, his passion for the games -- and for the fans who follow them through his friendly-and-ardent style -- have made him one of sports most recognizable voices.
