ST. PAUL, Minn. -- Jared Spurgeon spent a month watching the Minnesota Wild from the press box. When he returned to action Tuesday night, he didnt waste any time making an impact. Spurgeon had two assists in his return from injury, Darcy Kuemper made 34 saves and the Wild defeated the Tampa Bay Lightning 2-1. One of Minnesotas top defencemen, Spurgeon was placed on injured reserve Jan. 4 after he hurt his left foot against Buffalo. While the Wild went 8-4-2 in his absence, they were eager to get him back in the lineup -- and he was eager to get back into the flow. "I think theres lots of adrenaline that helps you," Spurgeon said. "At the start I was a little nervous being off for a month, but they threw me right out there for the opening shift and that helped me really calm down and get my feet wet for that first one." Spurgeon got started early, setting up Nino Niederreiter for his fifth goal of the season 9 seconds into a power play in the first period. Early in the third, Spurgeon helped the Wild double their lead when he fed Dany Heatley in the slot for his 11th. Spurgeon ended up playing 21:12, third-most among Minnesota defencemen. "Hes taken really good care of himself while hes been out," Wild coach Mike Yeo said. "To be able to come in and play at the level that he did tonight just shows you how smart of a player he is." The Lightning pulled within a goal with just more than 6 minutes to play when Valtteri Filppula tipped in Martin St. Louis pass at the goalmouth for his 20th of the season. Tampa Bay buzzed around the net the rest of the way, but Kuemper stopped Alex Killorn and St. Louis from in close, and Tyler Johnsons shot hit the post in the final 40 seconds. Lightning coach Jon Cooper was hoping to see a little more fire out of his club at the end of a 1-3 road trip. "I dont know how much courage we had going to the net tonight, until the end," Cooper said. "Hence, its shocking where our goal was scored, standing right in front of the net." While the Lightning are still clinging to second place in the Atlantic Division, goalie Ben Bishop said theyll welcome a return home for two games before the Olympic break. "I dont know if you want to say were tired, but its been a long road trip," Bishop said. "We dont want to make excuses, but weve got to be better." Bishop, who finished with 24 saves, was tested often throughout the first two periods, stopping Zach Parise on a breakaway with 5 minutes to play in the first period and stoning Mikael Granlund on a point-blank backhand early in the second. Bishop was shaken up midway through the second when Parise fired a slap shot that hit the goalie in the head, but he remained in the game. Meanwhile, Kuemper made a nifty glove save to stop Johnson on a breakaway late in the second and stood tall all night in his 11th straight start, a franchise record for rookie goalies. The Wild are 6-3-2 in that span, but Yeo was impressed with how Kuemper rebounded from his last two starts, a loss at Colorado in which he was pulled and an overtime defeat at Calgary. "How do you come back to the rink the next day and be mentally tough enough to come in and perform at the level that you need to? Thats what was very impressive about him tonight," Yeo said. "I liked his game an awful lot." While the Wild got Spurgeon back, they had another setback on the blue line 2 minutes into the game when defenceman Marco Scandella got tangled up with Johnson. Scandella skated off the ice with assistance, favouring his right leg, and did not return. Yeo labeled him "doubtful" for Minnesotas pre-Olympics finale Thursday against Nashville. NOTES: Filppula returned after missing Saturdays game at Montreal with a lower-body injury. ... St. Louis assist gave him 966 points, moving him past former Canadiens great Maurice Richard into 85th place on the NHLs career list. Danny Salazar Jersey . Altidore strained his left hamstring in the Americans opener against Ghana on June 16 and didnt play in their next two games. "We dont know how much because we need to see how hes going, but hes available," U. Bob Feller Indians Jersey . We were up 6-3 with a couple of minutes to go. You want to win that game in regulation. It was a good job by our team staying with it, but we have to do a better job at the end.Mike Fisher and Colin Wilson scored goals 1:22 apart in the first period, Mattias Ekholm and Mark Acrobello scored 1:41 apart in the second, and the Predators also got goals from Ryan Ellis and Olli Jokinen in opening a 5-1 lead. Rinne finished with 24 saves. If it ends 6-3, you like everything about the game, Predators coach Peter Laviolette said. You dont like the fact that they scored three goals to tie it up and bring it into overtime for us to win it. But at the end of the day, its two points, and there was an answer to the three goals they scored. The Predators overtook the idle Chicago Blackhawks for the Central Division lead, scoring on three of their first nine shots against Jonathan Quick and chasing him to the bench after Ellis power play goal gave Nashville a 3-1 lead at 9:43 of the opening period.Dwight King, Alec Martinez and Jeff Carter each came through during the Kings late burst. King scored on a 15-foot wrist shot. Martinez connected on a 55-foot slapshot with 1:04 remaining, and Carter completed the comeback on a 15-foot slap shot with 34 seconds left in the third period.I was really disappointed, Rinne said. When you have a 6-3 lead, you expect to win. It was a crazy game. I couldnt believe what happened at the end there, but Roman took care of business.Josi got a cross-ice pass from rookie Filip Forsberg as he was cruising down the slot and beat Martin Jones to the stick side with a 25-foot wrist shot the first shot of overtime. The bottom line is, you cant spot a team six goals and expect to win a hhockey game, Martinez said.dddddddddddd But you dont just stop playing. The Kings began a seven-game homestand after pulling out a 3-2 win at Vancouver on Thursday night with two goals in the final 2:07. King and Martinez each scored twice and Matt Greene got the other goal.Greene beat Rinne with a screened 60-foot wrist shot just 32 seconds into the game after Mike Richards won a faceoff from Paul Gaustad deep in the Nashville zone. The Predators, though, scored the next five goals.Nobody came in prepared to play a good team, King said. Theyre a top team in our conference for a reason. It took us a while to get into the game and when youre doing that against top teams, its tough to find a way to win. People werent ready for the hard part of the game, to compete.Fisher tied it at 4:54 of the first, jumping on a loose puck in the crease after Josis wrist shot from the left point hit traffic in front. Wilson was awarded his 11th goal at the 6:16 mark when his intended centring pass for Fisher from behind the net deflected in off Greenes stick.Ellis, on his 24th birthday, got his fourth of the season, a power-play goal on a one-timer from the left point. It was the Predators eighth power play goal in their last 10 games, following an eight-game stretch in which they were 0 for 27.Jones, seeing his first action in net since Dec. 12, gave up Ekholms goal on a wrist shot from the right point that changed direction off the stick of Kings defenceman Drew Doughty. Arcobello, making his Predators debut after he was acquired in a trade with Edmonton for Derek Roy on Monday, made it 5-1 with a wrist shot from the left circle at 3:57 of the second.NOTES: Nashville has won 25 of its first 37 games under Laviolette. He didnt reach that total until his 50th game with the Islanders (2001-02), his 73rd game with the Hurricanes (2003-04) and his 49th game with the Flyers (2009-10). ... The Kings have been short-handed no more than three times in any of their last 12 games, but have allowed 10 power play goals during that stretch. ... Fourteen of the Kings 21 losses have been by one goal. ' ' '
