PHILADELPHIA -- This was more like last years Eagles. Nick Foles threw one touchdown pass and led Philadelphias starting offence to three first-half scores in a 31-21 victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers on Thursday night. "I feel were improving every week," Foles said. "We have to keep moving forward." Steelers running backs LeVeon Bell and LeGarrette Blount both played one day after they were arrested for marijuana possession shortly before Pittsburgh (1-2) travelled to Philadelphia (1-2). "Im sorry to be a distraction to the team but Im only going to answer football questions now," Bell said. Blount also would only answer football questions. "I just want to apologize to my team, to the coach and the organization for causing that distraction," he said. Eagles All-Pro running back LeSean McCoy left the game with a right thumb injury after a 22-yard TD catch gave Philadelphia a 7-0 lead. X-rays on McCoys thumb were negative, but he didnt return. McCoy showed no effects of a toe injury that forced him to miss one practice earlier in the week. "Its no big deal," Eagles coach Chip Kelly said. The Eagles first-team offence had only one touchdown on six drives in road losses to Chicago and New England. But they looked more like the unit that set several franchise records in 2013. "We have a lot we can improve on," Foles said. "Its important not to get complacent." Foles was 19 of 29 for 179 yards and threw one interception. He led the offence to 17 points and 251 total yards before giving way to Mark Sanchez in the third quarter. Starting wide receivers Jeremy Maclin and Riley Cooper played their first game together, combining for nine catches for 68 yards. The Steelers couldnt get going against Philadelphias first-team defence. Ben Roethlisberger tossed a 27-yard TD pass to Heath Miller in the third quarter against the backups. "Were not worried about it. Its preseason," Blount said. Roethlisberger finished 15 of 24 for 157 yards, one TD and one interception. Bell had nine carries for 23 yards and Blount ran seven times for 32 yards. Rookie linebacker Ryan Shazier had six tackles after an impressive debut last week against the Bills. The Steelers werent happy with their defensive effort. "Im just ticked," end Cameron Heyward said. "We all have to look at each other in the mirror. Were not going to settle for anything less. We know when we put on this jersey, it represents a lot. We might not be the same players but we have to step up, make plays and focus." Foles got the offence rolling on the second possession. He connected with Maclin for 7 yards on third-and-5 and then hit Brent Celek for a 23-yard catch-and-run. A holding call on William Gay kept the drive alive when Foles threw incomplete on third down. Foles then tossed a screen pass to McCoy on third-and-10 from the Steelers 22. McCoy did the rest, following a takeout block by Todd Herremans into the end zone. Foles completed seven straight passes after misfiring on six of his first 10 throws. He was 6 for 6 for 56 yards on the third drive, which ended with Darren Sproles running in from the 1 for a 14-0 lead. Foles threw his third interception of the preseason when Troy Polamalu picked off a pass in the second quarter. The Pro Bowl MVP quarterback threw only two interceptions on 350 pass attempts last year, including the playoffs. He had 27 TD passes in the regular season, setting an NFL record for best TD/interception ratio. Matthew Tucker had a pair of 1-yard TD runs for the Eagles in the second half. Pittsburghs Bruce Gradkowski threw a 33-yard TD pass to Darrius Heyward-Bey and a 3-yard TD pass to Martavis Bryant in the fourth quarter. NOTES: Sanchez was 7 of 9 for 85 yards. ... Gradkowski was 8 of 11 for 105 yards and two TDs. ... Steelers K Shaun Suisham missed a 46-yarder wide left. ... Eagles K Alex Henery made a 36-yarder, but missed from 31. Muller, who scored five goals in the 2010 World Cup, was ruthless against a weak Portugal team that was clearly outplayed despite the presence of Cristiano Ronaldo. "To score three goals in the World Cup opener against such an opponent is great," Muller said. With Chancellor Angela Merkel supporting in the stands, the German team celebrated its 100th World Cup match with a rousing victory that was virtually assured by halftime. "After 20 minutes, we looked up at the clock and thought it was going to be a long day," Muller said. "But we got into the match very well and when you lead by 2-0 in this heat and then even get the third, it was all over." Germany always aims to have an impressive start and it certainly did this time. Four years ago, it started with a 4-0 win over Australia and reached the semifinals. What must be worrying for Germanys opponents is the apparent ease with which Joachim Loews lineup disposed of the fourth-ranked team in the world. Germany next faces Ghana on June 21 and the United States on June 26. Germany coach Joachim Loew said his team implemented his game plan very well, winning the ball in midfield and then quickly attacking. Muller scored either side of Mats Hummels headed goal as Germany took a 3-0 lead at the break, and added his third goal in the 81st. Ronaldo started at Arena Fonte Nova after overcoming a knee injury. He faded after threatening early in the match, including a shot from a break that Germany goalkeeper Manuel Neuer could only block, but there was nobody from Portugal to pounce on the rebound. "We lost the game already in the first half," Portugal coach Paulo Bento said. "We couldnt come back in the second. Germaany played very well, we couldnt do anything.dddddddddddd." Portugal was already 2-0 down before Pepe was red carded in the 37th minute for apparently head-butting Muller when the German player was sitting on the ground. Pepe had stuck his hand into Muellers face and the German went down. "I got hit but after that I am not really sure what happened," Muller said. It was Mueller who opened the scoring in the 12th minute after Mario Goetze had been pulled down by Joao Pereira in the box, coolly slotting the penalty kick into the right corner of Rui Patricios goal. "Ive been in some big matches before, so its not like I was afraid," Muller said. Hummels had risen above Pepe to double Germanys lead with a well-timed header from a corner in the 32nd, and Muller extended the buffer just before the break when he stripped the ball from Bruno Alves and drilled in a low shot. The Bayern Munich forward completed the rout late in the second half, poking in from close range after Patricio had fumbled a low cross from substitute Andre Schuerrle. He said the margin should have been bigger. "We should have used some of our chances better," Muller said, adding that it was hard to play in midday heat and humidity. Portugals chances were limited. Ronaldo fired a powerful free kick late in the match but Neuer punched it away. Portugal also lost big striker Hugo Almeida to an injury. He was replaced by Eder in the 28th. Fabio Coentrao injured a groin muscle and was helped off the field in 65th, to be replaced by Andre Almeida. Hummels then limped off the field with a right-knee injury, giving substitute defender Shkodran Mustafi his second cap. Germany could have scored more goals after the break but Mario Goetze and Mesut Ozil wasted good chances. In the second Group D match later Monday, the United States was playing Ghana at Natal. ' ' '
